Raccoons in my neighborhood taste like dog food.

/cause that is what I feed them

wotnartd 2009-02-01 07:22:44 AM
Why is this sick? It's resourceful and delicious.

So are squirrels and rabbits.

Abattur 2009-02-01 07:26:14 AM
Why is this sick?

It's meat, just like any other animal.
I really don't get it when some douches are all ready to eat some great veal, but start to whine when you put some animal that is not commonly found on a plate.

Vern the Worm 2009-02-01 07:32:01 AM
Get this out of the way - taste like chicken.

Abattur: Why is this sick?

Because Americans consider eating cats and dogs SICK, ergo, a cuddly 'coon would also be SICK cos it's not available like in say, McDOnalds or the local supermarket.

Gotta take sides, man. How else are Americans to feel superior at other nationalities eating stuff that isn't called turkey twizzlers, KFC, hot dogs and Big Macs?

Mr. Right 2009-02-01 07:34:38 AM
Has anybody asked subby why this is sick? Coon is good eating, properly cooked. So is beaver (no - the dam building kind), rattlesnake, rabbit, venison, elk, and bear. Wouldn't do a possum, however. Squirrels don't seem worth the effort - is there actually enough meat to make it worthwhile?

Raccoons sit down in front of their food and pick it up and eat it with their hands. Like people.

/they are tasty, however

That_Bob_Guy 2009-02-01 07:37:14 AM
Subby must like his food served in plastic wrap. I guess that's okay, but there's nothing sick about forms of protein that aren't chicken, cow, pig or fish. Or soy bean curd, it you're so inclined.

I'm here to break the stereotype of BMW driving, latte sipping, liberal voting, kitchen waste composting California coastal natives: I eat duck, goose, squirrel, wild pig, deer, and yes, raccoon. As long as it's legal to shoot, and I can eat it (no bears ... I have standards!) I'll hunt it.

Saves on grocery bills and it makes eating more of a personal experience. And game is pretty farking tasty if you know how to treat it.

Mr. Right: Coon is good eating, properly cooked

What is properly cooked? I did hear possum is really bad (super greasy I think), but I dunno that I've ever heard anything about raccoon meat.
Not that I'm going to bother killing one, it just wouldn't be worth the effort for me, but I'm curious.

Raccoon, which made the first edition of "The Joy of Cooking" in 1931, is labor-intensive but well worth the time, aficionados say.

My copy has an illustration showing how to skin a squirrel. I didn't notice any raccoons.

kqc7011 2009-02-01 07:55:31 AM
Coon, rabbit, beaver, woodchuck, squirrel and just about any type of ungulate are all tasty.
And that is just the start of my list.
Never had horse.
Yet.
Heard it was pretty good too.
I am a omnivore.

I've heard that, but I have a particular affinity for bears. Maybe it's the Native American in me, but I've always seen them as almost spiritual. They would be found on my plate as likely as you would find my Malinois.

Lee451 2009-02-01 08:05:31 AM
Why is this "sick"? I love wild game and would definitely like to opportunity to try 'coon. My father used to run a game checking station and he would always get venison from the hunters. Since he has had to close his store it is not as easy to get. Wild turkies are great as well.

Never bad-mouth a food unless you have tried it. It is the only way to expand your palette.

I always found raccoon to taste a little nasty. But maybe we never cooked it right. Both squirrel and rabbit are terrific fried and served in a nice milk gravy.

Ranger677 [TotalFark] 2009-02-01 08:18:23 AM
While I personally do not like game meat (my dad gets moose and seal sent to him from Newfoundland), it does not bother me when other people eat meat that is not commonly found in north american markets. Takes all kinds and all that.

I grew up eating coon. It is a staple in many southern communities. See, during reconstruction we learn to eat things we normally wouldn't. Turns out we learned how to properly cooked them.

drinki bird 2009-02-01 08:53:54 AM
personally, I think its far more sick to eat factory farmed animals than any sort of wild game. These animals had normal lives out in the wild until they met their end and became part of the natural food chain... at the hands of a predator who will hill them far more humanely than a coyote or cougar would.

plus, you know its not genetically modified or pumped full of questionable hormones and antibiotics(ever wonder why we have so much cancer nowadays?)

/maybe subbie is vegetarian?

Griphon 2009-02-01 08:54:58 AM
I've had coon. Its taste was pretty good, but I found it to be very greasy and tough. However, not knowing what we were doing, my wife and I didn't brine it like the article mentioned. We got the rest of the steps right.

Anyway, worth a try, but wouldn't rush out to buy another.

Ihaveanevilparrot What is properly cooked?

I've never had racoon, but from the article I would guess they are fatty and need to be treated similar to beef ribs - lots of slow cooking or parboiling and BBQing.

I live outside of Omaha, NE and had raccoons getting thru the cat door in the garage to get at the dog/cat food. Live trapped six of the buggers.

They didn't leave alive....

I regularly leave food out for the raccoons, opossums, and deer living in our woods. You never know when you may need them to return the favor.

I have no problem eating varments, but I at least want my varments to be vegetarian. Rabbits, squirrels, groundhogs etc. all subsist on a diet of nuts, grass, and veggies. You know what you're eating when you eat one of them.

Raccoons, on the other hand, will eat any nasty thing they can get their paws on--trash, carrion, diseased animals. That kind of diet can't make for healthy meat. I'm not interested in eating any critter whose carcass you have to pickle AND parboil before you can even start to cook it.

/of course, this is coming from someone who eats crayfish, so I guess I can't protest too loudly.

bigolstinger 2009-02-01 09:53:11 AM
You would never consider this in SC. Raccoon rabies are extremely prevalent here. Had a rabid coon come into my completely fenced backyard a couple of years ago and took on my dogs who promptly killed it. Regardless that they had been immunized, I had to quarantine them for 45 days. Without their shots, I would have had to put them down.

/hate raccoons

a mother raccoon killed my pomeranian, but I still can't bring myself to hate them... they're so cute and cuddly!

eat, is another story.

/yeah, yeah, I know, rat-dog... I found her but never found her owner. she had a great personality though. dumb as a stump... probably why she tried to play with baby raccoons and suffered the wrath of their mother.

My grandmother's rule was: Three squirrels, or she wouldn't prepare them. Five quail was her minimum. She could skin a rabbit faster than you could say "skin a rabbit".
