Upon hearing the news, son wonders how he can be charged with a video game.

good for her. If more kids had to face the consequences of their bad behavior, instead of having Mommy intervene on behalf of her snowflake, the world would be a better place.

Good for the Mom. Good for her. Anyone whom has raised children to adulthood, or currently has teens and deeply love their children, know how important this is, and how much it hurts, unless you are lucky enough to have escaped having to deal with something of this magnitude as your children grew up and matured. I have experienced both sides of the coin with my kids. And both are fantastic, responsible, caring, and loving people. I couldn't be more blessed.

Tough love is the toughest parental responsibility of them all. Making her son be held accountable for his actions is exactly what every parent should do with their children. It is very very hard on a parent who loves their child, but if they truly do love their child, it is exactly the right thing to do absent mitigating circumstances like the teen being a 'special needs' teen or being innocent of the accusations (which in that case you fight tooth and nail for your child if need be). This 16-year old teen (ie; Young MAN) will grow up and appreciate it in the long run if things go well. This I know first hand.

FYI... this is in California so the worst that her 16-year old juvenile son will face, more or less, is:

1) California Youth Authority jail time (Suspended in lieu of successful Juvenile Probation for 3 years, or until he is 20-yo, depending on what his Probation report is. *no criminal history almost always results in the minimal 3 years Juvenile Probation unless he has a history of school disciplinary problems which can extend the probation time for 2-years and includes having no further school disciplinary problems)

2) A nominal fine that will either be paid, or, worked off with Community Service in lieu of payment.

3) Community Service hours (the Community Service in lieu of paying the fine is consecutive which means he gets more hours in addition to the sentenced Community Service)

4) He will be unable to get his CA Driver's License until he is 21-years old (absent any priors involving a motor vehicle it is more likely that he will be unable to get a CDL until he is 19-yo instead of 21)

4) He will be on Juvenile Probation no matter what happens and if he reoffends as a Juvenile he will automatically get an increased sentence upon conviction for any new offenses.

5) Mandatory Juvenile Diversion (meaning he'll have to take a few classes and get a certificate of completion or go to see a 'teen counselor' for 5-10 sessions, or both.)

6) When the Juvenile turns 18-years old, or 19-21 years old depending on history, sentence, probation, etc, his Juvenile record will be sealed and he will have a clean slate as an adult with a good life lesson learned about being a responsible citizen in the community and being held accountable for his actions. Hopefully.

balthan: 6 kids, no mention of a father.

Well, barring divine birth, there must be a father. Probably ran off so he could continue being 15 for the rest of his life, leaving her to raise the kids. Happens all the time.

Teenagers lose their way sometimes, no matter how good of a parent you are. That's when you have to let go and do what this mom did. Sometimes it only takes one time. In fact, after raising 4 of my own and about 20 others, I'd say it works 95% of the time. Been there, done it, wore out the teeshirt and used it for a dust rag.

So don't go blaming the mom. She's obviously right on track.

One might hope that the male provider of genetic material would be more involved in his progeny than grandparents or aunts and uncles, but one is likely to be disappointed.

Way to go, Mom. My mom did the same ting to my younger brother when he got caught shoplifting at Sears way back when. Sadly, now my brother just blames cops for everything, completely ignoring the fact that he shouldn't have been doing illegal shiat. Some people will never learn, but I hope this works out for her.

True. I hate how anytime you read in the news about some kid committing a crime their parents are always like "it couldn't have been my Billy, he's such a good boy!". Even when those girls were caught ON CAMERA beating the crap out of another girl over some myspace drama the parents refused to admit that their kids were anything but angels and tried to spin it as if the sheriff was on a witch hunt.

On the other hand though, how great of a parent is she if her kid is drinking and stealing cars?

Watch out this is the same one that was on Howard Stern's show a few months back, for all you know there could be an iguana hiding under there. The face kinda points to that already.

Getting smashed while 5 years under the age limit, stealing a car, and smashing it into assorted roadside objects until one is arrested do not constitute "a momentary lapse of judgment".

By the way, mom's a hero for taking the hard line when it's really needed. That's not easy by any stretch.

In my view, you bring your kids up yourself.

Also, you're trusting the police, judiciary and prison system with your child's life - just to teach him not to borrow your car without asking. This is a plan that doesn't always work out!

It's mainly a matter of principle. Or lack thereof. I'm not sure if having no principles becomes a principle in itself or not.

darkhorse23: So don't go blaming the mom. She's obviously right on track.

Quite possibly. She could well be exhibiting tough love, but I've also seen the other side of the coin: worthless parents to throw the kid to the wolves when they screw up their upbringing.

There's not enough info in TFA to say, but assuming she's a good parent exhibiting tough love is no more logical (or likely) than assuming she's a shiatty parent who is washing her hands of her failures, and using the latest Oprah approved language to do so.

I grew up around enough white trash to know that the "teaching my kids a lesson" schtick can be as much of a responsibility dodge as a rearing strategy. Sorry if this isn't one of those cases, but let's not fall all over ourselves to applaud the Mom for saying what some of us want to hear.

Yeah! Like any DECENT teenager would ever want to drink! Off with their heads!

You are not thinking with your head and heart. Just your head. And it looks like you you stopped doing that the moment the first thought flitted through.

You know, the whole, "I'm a 16 year year old MAN! FARK YOU!"

My brother did the same thing. Went out, got trashed and the chief of police pulled him over on his way home. Took him to back to our house, dad said "let me spend the night in a cell" He had been getting out of control....and that one night in jail put the fear of God into him. He was a changed person after that.

Sometimes you have to hammer a kid. If the stepson did this he would get the same treatment. He got busted drinking at a school function and the wife tried to get the police to keep him over night, but the local jail has no plans for keeping a juvenile. They would have had to transport him 2 hours away. Would have done the little turd some good.

I wonder what happened to this little 7 y.o. strutting shiate, "Latarian Wilson." Struck six cars.

"It's fun to do bad things. I wanted to do hood rat things with my friends."

"Do you think you should be punished for what you did"

"Just a little, no video games for a whole weekend or somethin'."

Hopefully the presence of Obama the most merciful in the White House will light the bulb for our l'il hood rats against the thug life and help save the rest of us from future SUV theft, stabbings, muggings, etc. etc.

You sir, are a flaming douchebag.

If you are unable to recognize the very rare act called "parental responsibility", you should report to the nearest castration center to check yourself out of the genepool.

If you were just feeling snarky, give yourself a serious cockpunch and pray to the FSM that you don't end up with a precious little snowflake like the one in the article.

Are they saying they're incompetent at caring properly for the inmates? Sounds almost like they were claiming they would abuse him in your absence.

You should have refused to bail him out or take him home. Not only would you have won, you would probably have received a nice legal settlement from the city or county asshats for the false charge.
