God, ya gotta love a government that takes care of you like your mama...maybe we will get that here in the U.S.

We all need someone to tell us adults what we can and can't do.

I spent almost two months in Austria one summer, and never once tasted either vegemite or a dead dingo's arse.

How did subby ever manage to do both?

If you cut it with something (like butter) it's fine, but my first time is Oz as a kid I tried spreading it on toast like peanut butter. I wanted to pull my tongue out of my head.

Who was the first to push off the bottom of the beer barrel mash of rubbish as a desirable commodity to the Aussies? I wanna shake his hand! Now for you Aussies that actually consume this scrapple crap as if it where peanut butter in the U.S. perhaps a nice bowl of dicks would suffice.

Subby: government prepares to ban it
Article: "there is no way in the world that Vegemite would be banned" (quote from Deputy Prime Minister)

Government may TAX it, as hitting the wallet is generally the fastest way of influencing purchasing habits.

Veritas [recently expired TotalFark] 2009-02-01 01:45:58 AM
Actually, when this mindless scaremongering was first reported about two weeks ago, Julia Gillard DID expressly say there was no way Vegemite would ever be taxed under the current Government.

Maybe the Independent is being paid by Kraft to keep stoking the fires of outrage to get some extra adverti- er, I mean media attention.

/mmmm, dead dingo's arse

It's easy to make yourself. Just make vegetable stew, but use beer instead of water, then keep it on the heat until the vegetables dissolve.

I've had Vegemite a couple different times, and I can't exactly see what the appeal is. I know Americans like everything sweeter, but I think it tastes the way sour beer smells. I'm not a beer drinker and Vegemite is made from brewer's yeast, so that might explain it. But, it is to Australia as peanut butter is the US- no one else does peanut butter the way we do.

Nutella isn't bad, it's chocolate hazelnut spread. It just doesn't seem to go with anything it's traditionally eaten with, not bread, not crackers, not biscuits (American or English). On ice cream or in coffee, that's OK.

I happen to love the stuff. It's superb as a light smear [very thin, slather it on and you will not like it] along with butter. But then I like to salt my buttered toast too. Sigh.

I actually always thought Nutella was an American product since it's a chocolate type spread. If it's not, I'd be surprised if it didnt sell quite well in the USA.

It's chocolate spread with hazelnut in it. How can you go wrong?

zephyrkate: But, it is to Australia as peanut butter is the US- no one else does peanut butter the way we do.

Wasn't invented by a canadian?

Evidence of modern peanut butter comes from US patent #306727 issued to Marcellus Gilmore Edson of Montreal, Quebec in 1884, for a process of milling roasted peanuts between heated surfaces until the peanuts reached "a fluid or semi-fluid state."

PoopStain: I tried it when I was in Australia. Between that and "Nutella", I don't understand why Aussies don't just keel over dead at the age of 30.

Because they don't spread it on an inch thick and they don't eat it all bloody day.

Maybe because dead dingoes don't show up in Austria near as often as Australia?

It's a common joke for those in the know to slather vegemite on and watch the reaction of their victim. Don't slap it on thickly like peanut butter. That will be far too overpowering. The best way to have vegemite is spread thinly over hot buttered toast. Some people add cheese to it.

This.

And what's with all the comments suggesting that because some people (e.g. Americans) don't like something, other people (e.g. Australians) shouldn't be allowed to have it? To misquote:

"I may not agree with what you eat, but I will fight to the death for your right to eat it".

It originated in Italy during the 1940s when chocolate was outrageously expensive but hazelnuts were plentiful, if I recall correctly. Delicious stuff.

Having eaten enough vegamite (made by Kraft foods OZ) to form an opinion, it tastes like ass to me. The high salt isn't the problem. It makes it tolerable.

Like raw oysters to me. It's not the salt that makes me hurl.

/blech. A diet of both and I WILL go vegetarian. Sort of. Salted grasshoppers taste better.

I hope so. Normally I love watching troll fights (guilty pleasure), but he was just incredibly irritating & boring. He must have gotten bored messing with us plebes. After all I'm sure that he's awfully busy grading papers & writing his prize winning essay on vegemite & it's effect on the Australian populace.

Actually, it's pretty likely one of the South American peoples got there first, as they were the first to really cultivate the peanut. If a Canadian patented it, good on him. But, seriously, we put it on everything; it's like the bacon of vegetables (OK, legumes).
