What a piece of crap.

Lionel Mandrake [TotalFark] 2009-01-31 05:50:42 PM
They treated the Office of the Presidency with tremendous respect. And some of that respect was reflected in how they expected people to behave, how they expected them to dress when they walked into the symbol of freedom for the world, the Oval Office. And yes, I'm disappointed to see the casual, laissez faire, short sleeves, no shirt and tie, no jacket, kind of locker room experience that seems to be taking place in this White House and the Oval Office.

Nothing says freedom like imposing a strict dress code.

This plays well to the hardest of the hardcore in your party, Andy, but to everyone else it sounds like a grown man whining over totally insignificant shiat in the midst of crises created by the well-dressed former occupants...so, by all means, keep it up. I'm interested to see just how out of touch the GOP can become.

PainInTheASP [TotalFark] 2009-01-31 05:53:19 PM
Why are we still giving these people press time?

/Go home, Andy. We don't wanna hear it anymore.

POAC [TotalFark] 2009-01-31 05:57:30 PM
GOP: all marketing and appearance and no substance. Seriously, just once... ONCE... present a better idea on something. ANYTHING!

I think Obama should require everyone who enters the oval office to tie one hand behind their back. Then we can show the GOP that we can do a better job at governing in that fashion.

lurkster [TotalFark] 2009-01-31 06:14:08 PM
Two words: No pants.

That should be the dress code.

Or at least one idea that doesn't involve giving gobbs of money to industrialists.

Has anyone shown him the Picture of Ford in the Oval Office in a sweater and plaid pants?

What about the passage in one of Woodward's books where he describes Bush himself being in shirtsleeves in the Oval office?

Complete tempest in a teapot.

If tradition really mattered, Bush would have donned a powdered wig, linen shirt, cravat, coat, waistcoat, linen shirt, breeches, stockings and a tricorn hat.

flaEsq [TotalFark] 2009-01-31 06:35:49 PM
This horseshiat might go down better in 20+ years when there aren't as many around to remember the facade of a constitutional executive that this man helped construct.

bulldg4life [TotalFark] 2009-01-31 06:41:42 PM
When you can't do anything right, you might as well impose ridiculous guidelines so it looks like you know how to play President.

I would prefer a President (and Administration) that gets to work and does something to work towards a better tomorrow. If you need an arbitrary dresscode for this, you're doing something wrong.

40below [TotalFark] 2009-01-31 06:45:01 PM
As a black dude, he should be wearing a purple tuxedo with sparkly lapels big enough for passing aircraft to land on. White guys can't pull off that look.

Snarfangel [TotalFark] 2009-01-31 06:59:06 PM
I don't care if Obama wears sweat pants and a t-shirt most of the time. Sure, you might want to throw on a pair of jeans when meeting the Pope, but I'd rather he concentrate on doing his job instead of worrying about what tie to wear.

Why not? People are already accusing him of bringing back insiders from the Clinton administration. Why not adopt Bill's dress code as well?

He's disrespecting the Presidency? Give me a break. I think this douchebag is disrespecting President Obama by having the gall to tell him how he ought to dress in his own office.

He needs a nice big cup of STFU.

Well I'm gonna say, he's the President. Let him dress however the fark he wants to. He's here to help solve our problems and lead our nation, not win a fashion award or impress people by sitting in an office in a stuffy suit working day in and day out when most Americans won't see him doing it anyway.

eddyatwork [TotalFark] 2009-01-31 07:23:51 PM
Lionel Mandrake: Why?

Honestly? Because of the prestige of the office. When I dress up I feel more professional than if I wear an Eric Cartman t-shirt. I feel like I should dedicate more attention to my job because I am dressed as a professional. Considering you are president, you should be dignified.

LordZorch [TotalFark] 2009-01-31 07:25:45 PM
Has he started wearing sweaters like is idol, Jimmy Carter?

Personally, I'd be wearing Hawaiian shirts, board shorts and sandals, but that's how I work best...

At least not wearing a jacket in the oval office isn't actually a crime.

Did Obama wear a Cartman t-shirt? I missed that.

Christ, if the President and his team walked into the Oval Office in meatball-stained wifebeaters and cutoffs, I'd totally be on your side, but they didn't. They were cleanly and sharply dressed, there was no "disrespect" beyond that manufactured by sartorially anal retentive nitpickers. And who gives a f*ck what those guys think, outside of their tiny, uptight circle?

No one, that's who!

Now, if you can give me a good explanation as to how a hyper-uptight dress code makes a bit of fkn difference beyond satisfying some really sensitive fashionistas, please present it.

eddyatwork [TotalFark] 2009-01-31 07:54:21 PM
It's called being professional, which I guess most Farkers won't understand because it involves having pride in yourself.

eddyatwork: It's called being professional, which I guess most Farkers won't understand because it involves having pride in yourself.

So you would recommend that everyone in a professional office wear a jacket at all times, whether or not they're working alone in the office or with just a couple other people? It's one thing for the President to wear a suit when he's meeting with foreign officials or giving a press conference. In his own office doing day to day things, somehow I don't think his professionalism suffers if he takes off his jacket.

Furthermore, a real professional spends less time worrying about other people's jackets and more time getting the got-damn job done.

There's the zing.

Because clothes = pride. And not just clothes, but the ones they tell you to wear. That's pride. That is dignity and honor.

I think a lot of people have forgotten that President Obama is, in fact, the President now, not just a warm body keeping the White House occupied for the next 4 or 8 years. If the President wishes to take off his jacket and roll up his sleeves while in his Oval Office, then he does so.

Is it Presidential? Yes it is. You can tell by the fact that our President is currently doing it.

Ok I'm going to be torn apart by the howler monkeys but I will relate a personal anecdote.

I worked for a major tax prep firm and they had a business casual dress code. I chose to wear a jacket and tie every day because it felt more professional and by god it showed. My performance was stellar because of the feeling of being expected to be the best because I looked like the best. The interesting thing was that people noticed. The ladies (you basement dwellers should be taking notes), the clients, and especially the boss. Dressing up makes you want to be better.

well, it's anecdotal at best. not everyone is comfortable in a suit. i never have been -- i feel like some kid dressed up for Easter Sunday.

it's not that i don't have pride in myself, i just feel confined in a suit.

at the same time, i think that anyone criticizing the president for not wearing a suit jacket is just being an anal busybody.

So, Obama has motivational issues best resolved by wearing a tie?

Dude, stop pretending that your situation is comparable to President Obama's. And stop pretending that strips of cloth tied around the neck matter at the White House.

Fine, when you are some guy in some office somewhere, dressing "properly" might make a real difference. When you're the fkn President? Not so much. Some have risen above dress/fashion codes...Bill Gates can get away with flood-victim outfits and bowl haircuts...the President can get away with not wearing a tie - except among a tiny minority of tragically uptight critics, apparently.

So Bush respected the oval office but wiped his ass with the constitution?

You think rolling up his shirt sleeves is hurting the job performance of the President of the United States?

One thought: For every uptight dude who chafes at the idea of a President not wearing a tie, I'm willing to bet more than one look at the President and his staff and think, "those guys look like they're ready to go to work."

Loose collars and rolled up sleeves convey "disrespect for the office" to a few, but to most it looks like "Get comfortable, folks, we've got a shiatload of work to do."

Reagan wouldn't enter the oval office without a tie, because he had a strong sense of tradition and he knew that the Office of the President was bigger than he was.

W wore his big-boy clothes in the oval office because someone told him Saint Ronnie did.

Obama doesn't wear a suit because he's going to be elbow deep in W's mess for the foreseeable future and doesn't want to get them dirty.

I'm a lady with a very un-ladylike screen name. Seriously, pants and shirts that fit and learn to iron. Otherwise it doesn't matter if you're dressed up or dressed down. Doesn't matter if it's a suit if it is an ill-fitting suit.

One more thing (and you should know this from working in an office), the boss dictates the dress code. Last I checked, Obama was the guy that got elected. His office, his house, his dress code.

Kennedy didn't wear a hat??

OMFG!!1! That was (wait a sec...let me check the thread), um, disrespectful of the prestige of the office...and undignified...and unprofessional...and it lacked pride...and it was less than stellar...and something about non-basement dwellers being noticed by the ladies...and garanimals were involved I'm told.

So, you can clearly see the crucial nature of hats and ties to American security and stability. The importance of Sartorial Correctness is obvious...

To argue otherwise is to spit into wind.

Clear?
