Good. Declaring war on a tactic was the dumbest thing the US ever did.

Well, at least things will sound a bit less Orwellian.

Now that we have a president who can pronounce "nuclear" correctly, can we get rid of the phrase "weapons of mass destruction" too?

nope.

we also lost the war on drugs and the war on poverty.

Sometimes speech writers just throw words together that sound good and don't really mean anything. I know "war on terror" is stupid, but "twilight struggle"...

He chose an Arab network for his first televised interview, declaring that "Americans are not your enemy."

Bush also made "we're not enemies" speeches starting right after 9/11.

But, like with drugs and poverty, we'd lose and be forced to declare War on Everything.

YES!

Whose idea was that anyway? OK, so you're going to create another department and cabinet position...fine (well, not really, but anyway...), but whose fkn idea was "homeland?" Why not Department of Domestic Security? Or Department of American Security, even? Or better yet, nothing?

Seriously, too reminiscent of "Heimat" and "Blut und Bode" and Soviet propagandistic BS.

"He chose an Arab network for his first televised interview, declaring that "Americans are not your enemy."".

Good, I'd rather have him doing something more diplomatic, than having Katie Couric asking him hardball questions like "so, how do your kids like the White House"?

Or Oprah asking the really tough questions, like "Obama, how did you get so dreamy?

I never was a fan of the phrase. Yes, it was a war, but we weren't fighting "terror," we were fighting a defined group of fundamentalist Muslims who adhered to an ideology defining anything outside of it as unworthy of existence.

Every time you make something into a catchphrase you have to cut out a lot of details. The dangers is that people will not see that the catchphrase is only a shorthand for a larger concept, and that even the catchphrases' makers will eventually forget as well.

Get rid of the Patriot Act, FISA, the Department of Homeland Security, make siginificant cuts to the defense budget and reinvest in social spending and then we'll see.

Oh, and for farks sake, LET ME CARRY MY GODDAMN TOOTHPASTE ONTO A PLANE.

FloydA: Now that we have a president who can pronounce "nuclear" correctly, can we get rid of the phrase "weapons of mass destruction" too?

Actually Obama is not as intelligent as people think. If anything he is barely smarter than GW. He mispronounced several words including his name during his swearing in. How farking stupid do you have to be to mispronounce your own name? It is going to be amusing when Obama goes down as the worst president in history right after GW.

randomjsa 2009-01-31 10:34:34 PM
Yes, we're aware that the Democrats no longer wish to wage war against terrorists, which is a pity since terrorists have not stopped their war against the United States.

Tatsuma: I wonder exactly when "Never forget" turned into "Oh, just get over it"

Maybe when we realized that armies in the field will never be able to properly address a problem that should be dealt with through law enforcement and proper security.

I wonder when we decided not to enact the 9/11 Commission's findings?

Well in typical US fashion we'll still throw useless BILLIONS of dollars at fighting both when giving all the poor all the drugs would solve two problems in one blow.... no pun intended.

Perception is everything.

VinceBerry 2009-01-31 10:35:36 PM
I love that this gets a hero tag. So far the Obama campaign/administration has been about nothing but buzzwords and catchphrases. He's eliminating a catchphrase from the Bush administration so he can put in more from his speechwriters.

People need to wake up and see that not everything Obama does is sunshine and lollipops. He's a politician first and foremost, and by definition is a liar. If the next four years of news reporting are going to be fluff pieces about what words he chooses to use then I'm just going to stop reading the news.

Aside from condoms and Gitmo the biggest thing he's done is stop saying "war on terror?" Last I checked we still have troops in the Middle East. I don't care what you call it, it's still a bunch of Americans that need to get shipped home. But nobody wants to talk about that, because even though Bush got endless amounts of crap for keeping the troops in Iraq it seems Obama will (again) get a free pass. Sickening.

randomjsa: Yes, we're aware that the Democrats no longer wish to wage war against terrorists, which is a pity since terrorists have not stopped their war against the United States.

So, you're saying that the terrorists are at war with us? Is that what you're saying? Because if you are, then they are entitled to the full rights of the Geneva Conventions on warfare, and should not be tagged "enemy combatants."

Oh, what's that? You want your cake and eat it too? That's what I thought.
