Reminds me of college--the careful calculations to determine the cheapest possible form of alcohol, that was still drinkable. I think the result was either box wine or pabst.

Bah, if you want to be really cheap and still go out, change to jack and coke (or whatever) and take a flask to spike it. Then claim to be the designated driver for free sodas all night.

/Of course, you need to go with some buddies.
//THAT little oversight almost cost me a watering hole.

Unfortunately I have an expensive taste in booze, too.

Lagavulin/Laphroaig/Bookers aren't too cheap.

I guess Woodford Reserve can be reasonable at times, but damn I go through it fast.

Box of wine.

5 liter cheap-ass variety

12% alcohol, 169 ounces. That's 20.28 ounces of alcohol or 33.8 units of alcohol.

a fifth of vodka is 25 ounces and 40% alcohol by volume. that's 10 ounces of alcohol or 16.7 units of alcohol.

Wine boxes are often on sale around here for under 10 bucks. The budget drunk goes for boxes every time.

Goebel - the fine French beer - was always our beer of choice when you weren't using a bong but didn't have much money. It was actually drinkable on its own.

Also, who pays $22 for vodka?

I make my own beer. I can make about 60 bottles for about $12.00, if I use a store bought kit.

It's not great, but the price is right.

(A really good batch will run about $30.00)

Plus (and I learned this during years of tailgating) when one drinks vodka or whiskey, it involves less time peeing or standing in line waiting to pee -- that's more time spent drinking!

Cost-effective AND time-sensitive. And three of my four ex-wives said I wasn't a "go-getter!"

clickzoom don't ever ask stupid question again... i.e.; "why do the sad drinking articles have Detroit datelines?" I remember a buddy & I walked into R.O. when he lived in Pleasant Ridge. We were enjoying a rare Goebbel's @ Guzoline Alley while the bartender from our Catholic school explained the since discredited Irish Whiskys=Irish Flag=Catholics v Protestants(he couldn't explain Power's) when my buddy noticed a sign, then looked around & elbowed me. "Designated driver my ass-everybody in here is blasted!". And he was absolutely right

Taaka 1.75L can be found for $9.99 here. A couple of years ago, Spec's was selling it for $7.99. Many cases of it were bought at that price minus the 10% case discount ;)

It'd be a much better beer if they actually called it Miller LowLife. I'd drink it if it was called Miller LowLife too. Because that's what I am.

Went into rehab (well, kind of pushed into rehab) last year so I'm down to one or two vices now depending on how you view coffee and women, maybe zero expenditure on vices if there is free coffee from free women.

The present financial maelstrom (is it?) would be absolutely unbearable if I were drunk/high as I would be self-medicating more to chase away the fears of financial ruin, thus spending more of the money I don't have, and making myself less and less employable.

Wow, sober is ok. Who knew?

But were I still getting wasted I would not drink anything less than that which is contained in a glass bottle, sorry but boxed wines and plastic containers of vodak are not an option.

Our local brewpub charges about that, but it's because they make it themselves and it's damn good.

I've got the $10 box wine for my health. One glass a night on non-beer worknights. Clears my arteries, infuses antioxidants galore for about $0.33 a glass?

Then it's homebrew for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, unless I'm on vacation or a holiday. I told my wife one of the reasons I should homebrew is for economy. Of course, all I ended up doing it making more expensive brews for the price of normal commercial brews!

/$1 per bottle delectable, homebrewed Imperial Stouts and Barleywines FTW

Used to live in Chicago (born and raised, became a good and proper alky, etc.)

--And I know that Illinois' insane liquor distribution laws (i.e. bars MUST buy from a politically connected "distributor" - AKA the Wirtz family - whereas here in Iowa bars can stock their shelves from the local grocery if they so desire - so this jacks up the prices to a degree --

But I will never ever move back what with a SHOT of Beam being 7/8/9 bucks at a neighborhood bar.

WTF?

It was 3, 3.25 just 4 or 5 years ago.

How the fark can folks afford to get drunk there anymore???
