I will gladly pay her $20 per hour to pretend she's sleeping

trouzourt [TotalFark] 2009-01-31 01:21:34 PM
FTA:"is seeking women between the ages of 18 and 40 to participate in an art installation where a woman sleeps in a bed in the gallery space. The pay is $10 an hour."

Sadly the "No touching" sign will still be in use..

If she gets really drunk first we can change it from performance art to more of an ink on "canvass" thing.

For a mere $5, I will give her a Tony Danza.

Jonathan Hohensee: In before the art-bashing

I already got to use the following comment in an earlier art thread today...

I can never fully contemplate how "artists" got to be so damn stupid. I could take a dump on a piece of paper, smear it around, frame it, and call it "art". The sad thing is, you KNOW that there is some "abstract artist" out there who would pay money for it. Morans.

The same thing holds true for this story.

If she's hot, naked, and masturbating, I'll actually go to see "art".

I thrash around in my sleep way too much for this kind of thing, although I doubt I could sleep at all under those circumstances .

I could lay pretty still if I was actually awake but would get bored after 15 minutes.

I couldn't see the article, but if they were hiring guys i4 do it. of course it'd be an audio visual exhibit.
though since it's art I'd probably have to sleep in the nude, and who'd really want to see that?

lordargent 2009-01-31 04:35:28 PM
$10 per hour is barely over minimum wage here.

redomega 2009-01-31 04:36:42 PM
I wonder if any of the "sculptures" will find out they masturbate in their sleep.

Put a badge on her and give her a police car and make it official then.

lunkhed 2009-01-31 04:44:28 PM
My wife can do that. She's excellent at pretending to be asleep.

hurdygurdy27 2009-01-31 04:47:08 PM
Can I nominate someone? Or better yet, can I work out a trade so I could have a 'sculpture' come to my place and vacuum?

Can't they go to a women's homeless shelter and advertise, "free bed in warm building," and save the $10/hr?

/I want a consulting fee for thinking that up.

pugsleythegreat 2009-01-31 04:56:50 PM
forget that. I'll stick to sitting in a comfy office chair tinkering with computers and enjoying chinese food and mountain dews.

I have a feeling that that won't happen, for the same reason why inner city restaurants always hire young attractive white women---all about image. See my profile: I live in NZ. There is a big department store in my city which among other things specializes in European imported goods, as old as the city itself, in the middle of town on one of the most expensive plots of land (you know the kind of shop I am talking about). The workers there I assure you are middle class women of all ages. The young ones are hot, the old ones look presentable and dignified. In principle I am not against it, but I wonder how they manage to turn away those ... not in the usual image (you know, fat dude who otherwise has equal or superior qualifications). I am guessing back office etc, but they can't do that all the time, can they?

Yeah, but I still want the fee anyways. Plus they could add a bathroom and promte it as the cheapest apt in Manhattan, but with very wierd tenant requirements.

EdgeRunner 2009-01-31 05:34:11 PM
This reminds me of my own series of performance art pieces, which I titled "Tired old people sitting on benches". The trouble was, I displayed those masterworks in shopping malls, so no one recognized them as art. They thought they were just tired old people sitting on benches.

I kept forgetting the important rule. Common sights inside a museum are art, but common sights outside a museum are just common sights, so while you don't need a good idea to get funding, it's absolutely vital to get floor space in an appropriate building.

It seems that all "art" is nowadays is people trying to show things which are not in the usual way people do things. That's how you get the disconnect between what is said and what is done. Any child can do smartass things, like answer with nonsense like "dog" when asked to speak---strictly the child spoke, but it was not expected (means nothing). On FARK it's ridiculed. Somehow when you varnish it with a society's culture and do it in a museum you get money.

1. Be a smart ass

I am no art historian, and will not reply with what I just read 10 minutes ago on the internet. However, I still stand by the message that that is what laymen consider "postmodernism" to be.

And I know there are artists and philosophers who acknowledge this point of view (univ. lecturers etc.) It is only because what is considered to be "art" by the John Smiths and Jane Does (incl. me) has become less "accessible" in the sense that in the past you did not need to have any knowledge of culture beyond what you saw everyday to know it was "art", whereas there is no intuition to a lot of people to what "art" is now.

/"Art" in quotation marks since I never define it. Short hand for "what is said to be art". But you know that :p
//The various articles on the first page of Google results for "postmodernism" address all my points, so actually, thank you for arousing my interest, and no hard feelings intended.
///I did undergrad "philosophy" but really it was all logic.
////Just so I can colour others' opinions of me
//Slash-tastic

These are the jobs we were promised! Yes! Get the Stimulus bill passed and job openings are going to pop up overnight, you wait and see. The NEA can easily employ hundreds of people to do jobs such as creating canvass art out of nose pickings, or walking in a circle all day. The government as the employer of first resort, oh hell yes! And national healthcare, don't forget that, nose pickings canvas art workers! 10 bucks an hour with health care and a government subsidized mortgage, oh heavens to murgatroids yes! America America, God shed his grace on thee!

Softens_hands_while_you_do_the_dishes 2009-01-31 07:19:39 PM
And then we can give some of these workers a second job as union bosses. To be a union boss of the NPCAW, that would kick.
