In their ongoing effot to validate every conservative cliche about them, California liberals are now protesting ROTC because it trains people to shoot guns IN HIGH SCHOOL

That is kinda a key part there, ace.

What's an "effot?"

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2009-01-31 12:12:59 PM
High school may be a little late to start gun training.

GaryPDX [TotalFark] 2009-01-31 12:15:30 PM
I started teaching mine when the were 9 years old. Do you really want kids not knowing anything about guns and thinking they are just toys on TV?

Back in the day, there were shooting clubs IN HIGH SCHOOL. And it wasn't a problem.

Oh, I didn't pay enough attention to TFA. All this over pellet guns?

I shot my first gun, a shotgun, at around ten years old. It was also my last -- I didn't like it and I couldn't hit anything. If I ever move out into the country in a less regulated state I might try to learn to shoot properly.

El Freak [TotalFark] 2009-01-31 12:25:44 PM
If there are cases of kids being forced into ROTC against their will, I agree with them on that: it's wrong. As for the rest of it? Some of these people seem to be living in some hippy fantasy land where Imagine is a treatise on society and government rather than just a naive hippy pop song. They seem to be against any form of military recruiting in high school at all, and that is just stupidity. It would be nice if we didn't need a military at all, but until humanity evolves several notches a well-trained professional military is a necessity, and we need some young people to sign up, so the military should be allowed to make their case.

Something tells me these idealists have never stepped outside their nice little bubble to see how the world actually works, and that reality doesn't always match up to their ideals.

I was going to say that your kids have bigger problems than when they shoot guns, but that's unfair. Your silly politics do not mean that you are a not a good dad.

I was shooting rifles in 6th grade as a cadet in military school, so I'm really getting a kick out of these replies.

Last I knew, ROTC was voluntary. So it sounds like a simple case of sandy vaginas, that's all.

And DIA is right - shooting clubs in high school were common not too long ago, and here in Texas (especially west Texas) probably still are.

Sounds like a cooler JROTC program than mine... But mine was Air Force, the class was cool though, aerospace science and history. Right up my alley. Wearing the uniform sucked in high school though... It's not like you don't get enough grief in your teenage years.

The fact is, JROTC instills discipline, responsibility, and leadership values in high school students. Most Cadets do better in school than they probably would have otherwise.

I'm sure it was that they took the shooting clubs away and the poor kids didn't know proper gun usage and they no longer had a safe outlet to get their gun-firing aggression out. Yes, Columbine was because the liberals got rid of gun clubs.

I think the protestors should be drafted -- in to the boy scouts for a few months. They taught us how to shoot - and yes gun safety as well - in fifth grade. Of course I bet these people couldnt figure out how to get themselves back to camp using only a compass either....

My nephew was a darn good shot with a 9mm handgun at age 13.

At age 15 I let him shoot one of MY big boy toys...

Here he is shooting my submachine gun and ripping through 72 rounds of 9mm.

If a couple of idiots had tried that in my old high school they would have faced the wrath of every guy who had his own truck to drive to school. We all had gun racks in the back window... with at least one gun hanging there. A few of the girls were similarly equipped and were usually better shots. No one dared bring a weapon into the building. You could get yourself shot... and then expelled.

BTW, after using loaners to learn with for a number of years, my dad bought me my first shot gun at age 8, a 20 guage Ithica model 16 pump. I had it refinished this year. It is now 41 years old and looking like new.

As much as I'm anti-gun, I think that if a kid wants to shoot up his school he'll learn how by himself. This is just a good excuse to teach kids about how dangerous guns are and how to handle them safely.

My Junior Year a guy came dressed as a western star complete with Colt SAAs and Real live bullets in the belt loops.
the schools reaction was to take the cylinders from them till the end of the day.
My Senior year the new principal decided to enforce a no firearms policy on school property. He announced that security would be calling students to the parking lot for random searches of their vehicles, since it was the second day of dove season Security flatly said NO! I know most trucks had at least two shotguns behind the seats. He lasted another 3 days before the district got rid of him.

I find it interesting that we had all sorts of access to firearms and there were some pretty nasty fights between the farmers, and the gangs or the jocks and the gangs yet nobody from either side used to more than fists and feet. So could someone please tell me again how it is the presence of the gun that is causing our violence problem.

The problem is, people say things like "California liberals are protesting ROTC..." It's an overgeneralization, in the same thread that would include "Christians are protesting military funerals" just because of the Westboro douches.

So? They teach about safe sex, safe driving, safe use of power tools, safe cooking, etc in school. What is so bad about teaching someone how to handle guns correctly?

If you have your undies in such a twist, then get rid of all of that stuff. Otherwise you are a hypocrite.

Cuchulane [TotalFark] 2009-01-31 02:31:50 PM
"We are a coalition of parents, students, teachers and community activists who want San Diego Unified to eliminate weapons training from its military science courses, just as Chicago schools did several years ago. We also want the district to comply with state law and make sure that students are not placed in military science courses without informed consent from students and parents. We want students and parents to be correctly informed that JROTC does not satisfy any college admission requirements, and we want students to have adequate alternatives that actually can help them get into college."

Seems reasonable enough, and if the rest of the community does or doesn't agree with them will decide the issue.

Sounds like more of an issue in this thread that conservatives have a boogie-man obsession and also fear anything interfering with a steady supply of kids to feed to the military meat grinders we have pumping on two fronts. Oh, and of course, an excuse to talk about their guns and gun prowess.

\owns guns- big deal

My father and grandfather taught me to shoot, I taught my kids to shoot. Teddy bears and raibows? Silly hyperbole.

I don't trust the JROTC and military recruiters one bit. They lie worse than used car salesmen, and they are trying to latch on at younger ages. The main points of this group is trying to get the JROTC to follow the law. Also, stop lying to kids. Recruiters are pathological liars.

Chewbacca defense much?

/My high school had a rifle team. We used real rifles.... not pellet guns. That's how I got my first varsity letter.
//Also had to unload our guns with the bolt open when we stowed them in our lockers during the day. Yeah, none of the lockers actually had locks, either.

I had my first BB gun when I was 6. My old man took me to the range to shoot shotguns at 10. Since then, I've shot rifles and handguns as well (shot both for the first time around the age of 12).

Gun fearing people are creepy.
