Is not paying your taxes a requirement for an appointed position in this administration? While looking under the seat cushions did he find any more votes for Al Franken?

Is not paying your taxes a requirement for an appointed position in this administration?

Obama decided to make a subtle change to respond to criticism that he was delivering more of the same by repeating the Clinton administration. Clinton's nominees failed to pay taxes for others. Obama's failed to pay their own taxes.

Awww, give poor Daschle a break. After being kicked out of the Senate, he was busy getting paid two million dollars to be a "special policy adviser" (read: "lobbyist") for Alston & Bird.

Alston & Bird's health care lobbying clients include CVS Caremark, the National Association for Home Care and Hospice, Abbott Laboratories and HealthSouth. But don't for one minute think that this may violate Obama's anti-lobbyist ethics vows. no sir, not one bit; how could you even think that?

m0llusk [TotalFark] 2009-01-31 11:33:37 AM
With a Fair Tax in place this would all have been paid up front with each transaction as products and services were distributed. Whatever issues Tom Daschle may have, the real problem is with a tax system so convoluted that it invites these kinds of errors whether they are mistakes or fraud.

I'd prefer land value taxes, since it's impossible to smuggle, hide, or stick land in a Swiss bank account.

/plus, it wouldn't distort the market like taxes on labor, capital, or trade.

lobbyist isn't the same thing as adviser. lobbyists actually lobby on behalf of the company they represent. advisers advise.

i don't know what daschle did there, but saying one is automatically the other is kind of absurd.

Silly people, Democrats don't pay taxes...those are for little people. What happened to this administration's promise of integrity? Hell, they didn't start with any so they're already at a giant net loss.

Sucks that Obama has basically no one to appoint that isnt a crook.

Hard to change things up there. Only solution is to nuke it while they are in session, which is about 20 days a year.

Where do people get this crap that votes were 'found' for Al Franken? There is not one shred of proof, but idiots keep repeating it.

I love the smell of faux-right wing outrage in the morning. He should give up the appointment but I'm personally not going to freak out if he doesn't. After all the BS and excuses for the Executive Branch of the last 8 years, who really cares. Shiat like this came so naturally, it probably wouldn't have even merited a blip in the paper. That doesn't make it right. It's just how it is in Washington.

With all these politicians delinquent by tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars, it makes my dad's $10,000 in the hole from losing the house (after having lost his job six weeks after putting most of his money into the house and trying so desperately to keep it) seem pretty tame.

Farking cocksuckers, the whole lot of them. (No, not my dad. :P)

Obama Plan Has Already Boosted IRS Tax Collections

(2009-01-31) - In office less than two weeks, President Barack Obama has already increased tax receipts at the U.S. Treasury with an innovative plan to get tax-dodgers to pay up, in full, immediately.

"The president's plan is simple but ingenious," said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs, "He targets wealthy individuals who filed inaccurate tax forms, cheating the government out of tens of thousands of dollars. Then he just nominates them for cabinet positions. They suddenly see the error of their ways, and they cut checks for the full amount owed, plus interest."

In the month of January alone, Mr. Obama has forced Timothy Geithner, former president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, to cough up $43,000 he owed the IRS, and former Sen. Tom Daschle to pay off his $128,000 tax obligation. Mr. Geithner will put his tax-paying experience to good use, overseeing the IRS as Secretary of the Treasury. Mr. Daschle hopes his recently-good behavior will garner Senate confirmation as the next Secretary of the Health and Human Services.

"With the IRS underfunded as it is," said Mr. Gibbs, "this collection method is much more efficient than dispatching field agents. Arresting these men, or compelling them to pay penalties would take years, and make them feel bad about themselves. The president's method not only gets more money to the government to help our economy, but provides a self-esteem boost by giving these wealthy men important-sounding titles."

The Obama administration will reportedly expand the program by creating hundreds, perhaps thousands, of additional cabinet posts, available to any rich person willing to "fess up and settle up" with the IRS.

I don't like it at all.

Which part of Daschles plan do you think is unduly influenced by these groups?

"What do you say to the tax man when he comes to your door, and says, 'You have never paid taxes!'"

"Two simple words. Two simple words in the English language."

"I forgot."

"Say you're on trial for armed robbery. You said to the judge, 'I forgot armed robbery was illegal.'"

So why is it that lobbyists in an administration are bad? Is it because they might feel a special something in the eye for the guys who had been paying them to lobby?

So...instead of physically going to the Congressional offices to lobby members, he sends someone else to do the talking for him.

"Senior Policy Advisors" are the bosses of lobbyists. They also happen to be people who want to go back into government, but don't want the stink of a lobbyist on them. It is a well known secret around these parts.

The whole thing. The whole, entire thing. It's not an explicit quid pro-quo, it's an overall culture of corruption. Ask the clients why they felt Tom Daschle's "advice" was worth $2million, is he really that insightful?

/And yes, in Daschle's case "adviser not lobbyist" is just semantic game-playing

Maybe all the obama-zombies can finally admit that both parties are farking rich fark-wits that dont give a shiat about the people except to keep them blissfully unaware of their shenanigans?

I doubt that would ever happen though, they need to believe in his change, spare change to be exact.

dosboot 2009-01-31 01:22:02 PM
So Obama selects an individual (Geithner) who forgot to pay his taxes for several years as head of the department responsible for collecting taxes. Move on...

Then Obama, who claims to have an anti-lobbyist policy, selects a "special adviser" to a top health care lobbyist law firm with clients such as CVS, Abbott Labs, and Healthsouth, to be head of the department which is in charge of health care. So what? Did I mention that he also forgot to pay his taxes? Move on...

The head of the House Ways and Means Committee, a Democrat, which is the chief tax writing committee, also forgot to pay his taxes. Move on...

Al Franken, a Democrat, who has run a populist campaign, forgot to pay his taxes and forgot to obtain workers compensation insurance for his employees. Move on......

Change you can believe in!

As Leona Helmsley, a Democrat, once said, "We don't pay taxes. Only the little people pay taxes..."

Peter von Nostrand: I love the smell of faux-right wing outrage in the morning.

No kidding. Don't get me wrong, I'm disappointed here, and Daschle should probably not be appointed, and whoever is vetting candidates for Obama should get their hand slapped. But other than that, I'm not all that upset about this (unless of course Daschle gets off scott-free, then I will probably take much more issue with everything).

Now, I will tell you what is annoying me about Obama, is the waivers he's requested for lobbyists. I'm not buying it, but then again, unlike what so many of you right-wingers are hell-bent on believing about those of us who liked Obama better than McCain, I don't think he is perfect, or any sort of Messiah figure (c'mon, I'm from the south-side of Chicago, I've seen him in action, he's a good guy, but give me a stinkin' break) in fact, I knew that he had an underhanded streak about him, like all politicians do (unfortunately).
