They do both seem to want to increase the national debt to atrocious levels.

Totally no comparison: Reagan flushed billions of dollars down the toilet, while Obama is trying to rebuild all the crumbling infrastructure (maintenance that Reagan defunded).

(Did Reagan do some good things? Sure. Will there be some waste in Obama's upcoming stimulus plan? Undoubtedly. But the distinctions are clear, and separated by orders of magnitude.)

It's not news; it's right-wing talking-point despair.

Enjoy your upcoming generation of irrelevance, guys. You earned it.

Actually he's a lot like Reagan, if you're talking about sticking a Rake in the vox populis and scratching around.

As much as I love Obama (and I do), it's crystal clear that no one in this nation has the slightest idea of what to do asides from 1) let it go to oblivion (no thanks) or 2) do what Bush did.

I am really having a hard time grasping the outrage here. Can someone explain for me?

Magorn 2009-01-31 08:30:30 AM
Well, let's see:

They Both give a pretty good speech

Obama's a graduate, magna cum laude of Harvard Law School, where he was editor of the Law review

Reagan got a BS from Eureka College

Obama worked as a community organizer, organizing the most impressive GOTV Chicago's South side ever saw, Then as a private lawyer, then as a State and US Senator

Reagan was an actor and sports announcer, became president of the screen actor's guild; served a willing henchman of Sen. Joe McCarthy blacklisting members, made a name for himself in the 60's opposing civil rights and fair housing legislation as violating "states rights". Eventually became governor of California.

Both elected president by wide margins after both being considered a long shot when they began their candidacy

Obama enters office widely praised for his keen intelligence and active engagement on policy matters

Reagan entered office largely considered a Prop by his own staff, and may or may not have been in the first throes of a debilitating disease that destroyed his brain.

yep. No way Obama measures up, almost heresy to suggest it..

Not NPR. NPR is awesome.

I'm noting subby's outrage about comparing a Seekrit Commie Mooslim to St. Ronnie. And his whining about funding NPR.

Pocket Ninja [TotalFark] 2009-01-31 08:41:22 AM
No, actually any doorknob could compare Ronald Reagan to Barack Obama. It's not hard. But the type of people who view NPR as some politically biased liberal bastion of untruth aren't generally intelligent enough to comprehend all but the most surface comparisons anyway, so this headline will work as a predictably beautiful troll.

CayceP 2009-01-31 08:44:19 AM
Admittedly, it's relatively few of my tax dollars compared to the rest of the atrocious garbage funded in this country.

platkat [TotalFark] 2009-01-31 08:45:48 AM
Are you seriously whining about .0001% of your tax dollars being spent on NPR? Do you know how much goes to defense? Defense we need in part because of poor leadership?

No, not only NPR could favorably compare Obama with Reagan. I'm sure the New York Times and Boston Globe, for example, would be glad to help.

He hasn't had time to f*ck things up yet as badly as Reagan did.

Sure, only NPR...and all the Republicans mentioned in the article. But, if you don't include them, then, yeah, only NPR.

difference: Reagan publicly and figuratively, Obama secretly and literally in fantasies they don't tell their wife beard about

These guys might agree with the comparison (new window)

And yes, I recognize that neither Reagan or Obama truly fit the true definition of the word, but both have a following that worships them so the label does somewhat fit.

Besides... It's a good excuse for Living Colour.

DamnYankees: What did Reagan do well again?

Raised taxes 6 times in 8 years.
Negotiated without pre-conditions with the Evil Empire (not some piddling Axis of Evil).
Amnesty for Illegal Aliens
Cut and Ran in the face of Islamic Extremism.

That's the really sad thing about the GOP, W was the truest Conservative Leader in the Last 100 years. He gave the base everything they wanted, and yet they still try to claim he wasn't a conservative.

deevo 2009-01-31 10:19:55 AM
About 2% of NPR's funding comes from bidding on government grants and programs, chiefly the Corporation for Public Broadcasting; the remainder comes from member station dues, foundation grants, and corporate underwriting.

WOW. Two percent. Of 258 million dollars. I want my money back. Farking socialist radio.

They should operate more like private entities, like Citigroup.

I think that what people should take away from this article is simply this...the citizens of the US are divided mostly along a very very thin line. They all agree on where they need to be but disagree on how to get there. This has been evident in ALL of the most recent elections (if you discard the racial and feel-good factors). What the public should be crying for, and isn't, is less rhetoric and more compromising. You do not get from A to Z without first going through L,M, and N. Instead of setting lofty goals maybe we should force our Congress to take small steps towards the end goal. Otherwise, and make no buts about it, we will face the same partisan politics in 2012 or 2016. The cycle seems clear at this point. The country appears to be swinging back and forth out of frustration.

I agree, but don't think it's going to change anytime soon. If the debate over the latest bailout is any indication, we're going to see two years of the democrats pissing on the republicans, and the republicans packing up their marbles and going home.

We are lost until we end the two party system. I say we draft congressmen and senators at random from the populace.

The public spoke this fall and elected a dude who absolutely adores compromise. Unfortunately the other party isn't quite up to it yet, but all the friendly meetings, overtures, and concessions by the President to the Republicans are going to make them look like pretty big jerks soon if they continue to snub them completely.

No GOP President has ever been, I think I've heard. Basically, conservatism has this laundry list of pointy-head theories that they bow down to but never have the balls to put into practice.

Which is how the Republicans keep getting away with saying, "But this time conservatism will work! No one's done it right yet!"

Ronald Reagan was a con artist. "get government off the backs of business" was his oft quote. now we see the results of government regulators off the backs of business.........

Frank Zappa --Fark Yourselffark yourself with a rubber hose

Up your nose and in your heinie hole
I don't care where it goes
And it don't matter if you're straight or gay
You should fark yourself anyway
Now, you don't have to listen to a word I say
But I know you, you'll be humpin' awayfark yourself with your neighbor's nose
If you can't use that, use a 10-foot pole
Stick it up your ass and go for a stroll
Everyone will know you've been to this show
If you can't take, eat my stool
Masturbate with some crazy glue
I don't care what you do
Fock yourself with a garden toolfark yourself with politics
Ahh they're full of farkin' farkin' shiat
I mean you know we've been lied to ever since we were born
It's amazing that we've been getting farked that longfark yourself with the world wide web
Man you could ride that sucker right from your bed
You may even meet a Tom, Dick, Jane or Billy
Then grab onto your modem and fark yourself sillyfark yourself with your heart and soul
Give it everything you got, hey I'm talkin' to you
If you can't even fark yourself,
How ya gonna fark somebody else?fark yourself with my microphone
I'll give it to you later when we're all alone
We can turn it up loud
And see if you come, but
Don't get your jizz on my microphonefark yourself with organized religion
Now that is some seriously sinnin' business
If the Lord sees their pathetic crimes
He'll be farkin' them 'til the end of time
And can someone explain to me this racist crap
I know it isn't white, but it isn't black
And to all you people who only see things your way
Well, you can suck my dick and take all dayfark your nose with a pound of blow
Watch your money get up and go
but when you burnt your brain and you say
I don't know!
I hate to tell you but I told you sofark yourself with this grunge rock noise
I mean, stuff those albums in your groin
They come down on me because I know how to play -
Hey... fark you!fark yourself with a copy of Rolling Stone
Or are they too holy for your holiest of holes
Now those people think they're holier than Moses
But aren't they just a bunch of farkin' posersfark yourself with your mother's jewelry
I won't tell, I ain't a stooly
If you pounce hard enough you'll cough up a ruby
Your blood will be rich and so will your doodiefark yourself with the latest fashion
With your spikes and your hair and those cute little buttons
And if you happen to have some leather and lacefark yourself 'til you're blue in the facefark yourself with your income tax
They're farking you and that's a fact
Before you know it your money's all spent
And you've just been farked by the governmentfark yourself with your lawyer friend
You're the only one that's getting farked in the end
I have been so farked by legal bills
that my asshole is the size of Beverly Hillsfark yourself with your full-length sweater
With your minks and your diamonds and your Irish Setter
With your cash and your trash and your sinks and your drinks
Just fark yourself 'til you can't even think
