Here's to hoping that Obama "persuades" China to let their Huan float.

And more importantly, here's to Obama biatch-slapping China into freedom of speech, freedom of religion, worker protections, adequate food and water supply, etc.

Obama is just a fool in the rain. All he has done is ramble on about the economy and he has done nothing about fighting the battle of evermore pork in goverment. And look at New Orleans? What are we going to do then the levee breaks again? He seems to care so little the walls might as well be made of four sticks and some mud.

I really believe that the republicans should give no quarter when it comes to his policies. Yet they are so indecisive they just leave me dazed and confused. I really don't have a whole lot of love for them either.

Meanwhile in Kashmir the song remains the same in regard to the aggression by India. It's turning into communications breakdown between the two countries, and he's spending his time going to California for votes

We also need to find Osama Bin Laden and hang him from the gallows pole, but so far, any sort of government priority in regard to this is just over the hills and far away. The entire thing is just a big heartbreaker.

Yes, we need to institute protectionist measures (new window) during an economic downturn. It worked out so well the last time. (new window) It is not like we do not sell anything to China. (new window)

We need to change the trade imbalance by helping manufacturing export our goods not by degrading imports.

Ok fine just stop bullshiatting everybody with fake promises of better paying jobs down the road. Now that everyone's credit cards are maxed out and all the equity in their houses is gone and they haven't had a raise in 10 years reality is now sinking in with the American people that Globalization means a lower standard of living in America, too bad none of the politicians promoting it have the balls to be straight up and tell us that.

Karma Chameleon: I know this is about Chinese trade, but Obama needs to grow a pair and work to have NAFTA repealed pronto.

From my perspective, NAFTA made some damned sense. Look, just geographically, Mexico's problems are our problems. More so, because we're pansies about erecting a big wall with frickin laser beams.

NAFTA, at least in theory, could have been designed to try and drag Mexico into relative modernity, relative good governance (pushing for labor and environmental laws), and eventually even lower, sustainable birth rates. Kinda like integrating the poorer US South into the economy after Reconstruction. North America, sustainable and defensible.. Work on improving Central Am. and Caribbean after that.

Instead, of course, we immediately threw the doors open to China, with barely an eyebrow raised about human rights and environmental policy. And, in the process, set the Mexican paisanos (and our own Joe Sixpack) up to competing against Chinese poverty and Chinese moral poverty.

China doesn't own a substantial enough amount of our debt that they have any leverage on us based on that. (Around $600 billion of the $9 trillion total.) Japan or any other country would be happy to lend us more if China called in its debt. Their only leverage is in their production of consumer goods, but they are equally dependent on us for the purchase of those goods. If they stop devaluing their currency, it's not going to help anyone, though. It allows them to pay workers a living wage which would not be a living wage at nominal exchange rates. If they stop devaluing their currency, they'll have to pay their workers more, and we'll pay more for goods.

I am a life long Democrat. I am embarrassed after all the hand wringing of the last 8 years, and the Stimulus Package is the best they can do?

Except for the expanded unemployment benefits, and subsidies for COBRA, nothing in this package is going to stimulate anything.

The best way to stimulate the economy is to get people to spend money. Unemployment benefits are one of the best ways to stimulate spending during a recession.

The stimulus package should not be an opportunity for Democrats to enact policies under the guise of recessionary fear. I hate to agree with the Republicans on this, but they are right not to support this package.

The problem is the Republicans offer nothing but the tired old Tax cut refrain. That is not an answer, either.

That it does. That it certainly does.

Problem is, a "flat" world is one where the median person everywhere is living the median life. Median life is somewhere slightly above tin shack without electricity and shiatting in gutters, but a fair bit below low-end US trailer park. Median life is arsenic in the water, but only enough to kill you in your fifties, not your twenties.

Fair that everyone should be flattened? Yes, from a moral sense. I can see that. But, do we elect our leaders to defend our advantages (we're not stupid overpopulated like Bangladesh and have quite a lot of natural resources)? Yes.

You're retarded, or have no understanding of economics at least. Globalization raises people, it doesn't have lower anyone. Economic growth does in other places does not mean economic depression here. The rise of the East Asian Tigers, the growing economies of Eastern Europe, and the success of China have not made the U.S. impoverished, they have only lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty.

Dude, it has only been a week

A long week. Cut the defense department 10% but increase spending for bee keepers and new golf courses, push along the largest spending bill in history with only 8 or so hours of debate (btw which isn't stimulative given that only 10% will come in 2009, and what stimulus there is will be offset with higher taxes), support protectionist policies and rhetoric that could set off a debilitating trade war.

Big American companies go to China, open shop, hire workers, avoid taxes and laws, underpay, and sell it all back to USA citizens. USA citizens lose jobs, get low quality trash products that break in no time, buy again and again. China makes the money, we just buy, charge to our credit cards and go in debt as our jobs dwindle to nothing. Our pay goes down, down, down. China pay still much lower. China grows, makes more money. US loses. That's how it works now. That's why it does not work now. Globalization hurts America in every way. There is no win-win. We lose.
