I'm an old school Pumpkins fan. While I'm not as rabid for them in the past five years as I was in the 90s, I do still support them. They'll probably always be my "favorite" band.

I swear the Pumpkins and Billy Corgan in particular have more negative submissions on Fark's music tab than any other band. But it's really kind of awesome to see that a band who many now dismiss still has the clout to earn a spot in the pre-kickoff Super Bowl commercial in 2009. Call it selling out if you want but everyone is driven by money in the end. Why deny it? The fact is that Hyundai probably had their choice of song/band for their commercial and they picked the Smashing Pumpkins.

If you look on Spin's website, you can see the commercial right now. And the song is cool, and it fits really well with what's going on in the commercial.

Do you not find it a wee bit hypocritical of of the band to bash the use of their songs in commercials then change their mind less than a year later?

You must visit the Music tab once a month then. Although many people dislike Smashing Pumpkins, there are TONS more artists and groups that get bashed on Fark more than them.

Most bashed band? Metallica. Silly farkers and their grudges.

runfaster21 2009-01-30 11:17:31 AM
Ok yeah, you're right. Metallica gets more hate here.

And my issue isn't with whether they're hypocritical or not. Maybe they are; I couldn't care less. I like their music. My point is that I'm happy they're still relevant after all this time.

What artist in their right mind would say, "No, we don't want to be in the Super Bowl commercial. Thanks but we're more happy to have our artistic integrity." Let's be honest, the Pumpkins aren't exactly getting a ton of mainstream exposure these days. Billy would have been crazy to turn them down.

Yeah, methinks this is an example of 'Confirmation Bias'

Eshman 2009-01-30 01:05:36 PM
I really like their music, but the buck stops there. Corgan is a pompous ass, who spends more time whining about his fans and insecurities than any other artist to date. Someone should read the latest Spin article on them. Corgan's a big whiney baby.

What gets me is not the fact they're selling out, but the fact that their stupid asses sues Virgin not long ago claiming selling their songs was a loss of creditability.

Virgin records gave permission for that song to be used in the commercial a year ago.

There is a difference between the band making that decision and some suit at the label making that decision for the band.

If what you say is true, then he's a douche of a different color.

The right to use songs in advertising doesn't belong to bands or labels. It belongs to songwriters. Performances of songs belong to bands. If what you've said is accurate, he would have to have signed over BOTH publishing & performance rights to his label.

Given the well-known number of people in music who've ended up penniless after selling their rights, you'd have to be a real Wentzbag to have agreed to that while you're still making money.

Ironically, it was just 10 months ago - in March of 2008 - that the SMASHING PUMPKINS slapped former label Virgin Records with a lawsuit, claiming that the company used the PUMPKINS' name and music in a promotional campaign for Pepsi that supposedly damaged the group's credibility.

Frontman Billy Corgan said in a statement at the time, "We fought hard for the right to be in control of how our music is used, to avoid situations like this kind of crass commercialism and exploitation," adding that the use of the band's music in the Pepsi campaign threatened their "artistic integrity."

Label used music without their permission, so they sued.

Sounds more like business than anything else to me.

Not defending Corgan, I think he is a bit of a Wentz, but for different reasons. This wouldn't be the first time TSP have sold out (Batman and Robin anyone?). It's just different when they're not the ones making the decisions.

Batman and Robin is easily the worst movie of the nineties, but the two songs the Smashing Pumpkins contributed were flat out awesome.

The point is how pissed off Corrigan was about his music going to Pepsi, because it's selling out. He's already long sold out, and then he sells out again. Selling out is not a bad thing, but it is when you do it, and get pissy with people about it.
