(Some Guy) Interesting Owner of presidential-themed restaurant surprised by the customer backlash when he emailed the announcement for the new "Obama Room", probably because it replaced "Cheney's dinner critter shooting range"   (ocregister.com) divider line 111

"I could never be, and as much as having an African-American in the White House could be a good thing, having one with Marxist ideals is certainly not a good thing! I will not be patronizing your restaurant, much less the 'Obama Room.'"

So, to recap, Orange County Republicans:

1) Believe a Marxist is currently the President of the United States
2) Believe Americans are so stupid that they freely elected a Marxist to be President.

When did calling Americans stupid and gullible become patriotic?

Half a dozen complaints, out of several thousand on the email list; usual rule-of-thumb in the restaurant business is one complaint for every ten disatisfied. So... only about one percent hypersensitive loud-mouthed right wing nutjobs?

Sounds pretty good to me.

Okay, at first I was thinking "Jesus, more Obama worship."

I like Obama, I voted for him, and the whole "Obama worshippers!" bullshiat is mostly just that. However, there's been some pretty ridiculous stuff lately about Obama and MLK and just some... overly enthusiastic fanboyism about him. I was getting groceries at Shop-rite last night and they had an MLK day banner that had MLK and Obama on it, with the words (paraphrasing, I should have snapped a shot with my phone), "Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream. Barack Obama lived it."

Yes, it's inspirational, but even I (an avowed and shameless liberal who greatly supports Obama) thinks this is going nuts.

That said.. um... this is a small plaque designating a dining area in a farking White House theme restaurant. NOT having an Obama room would be full retard.

/Disclaimer: At least 95% of all "OMG Obama worship!" accusations are total bullshiat. Example: This.
//Double Disclaimer: That remaining 5% can still be a tad unnerving, when he's still just getting settled into the position and we're facing some big problems.
//Double Secret Disclaimer: Of course, considering how shiatty the economy is, things like hope and optimism are absolutely vital.

Being someone of good means, I also have the time and energy to devote toward making dinner plans based on the perceived political leanings of yon restauranteurs. To make sure the message of my denials to take them up on offers of supper for a price is clear, I always reiterate the babble from the radio and TV talking heads that I have justifiably concluded are the most fair and balanced.

Heh. That's why people are upset. Whilst the Obama room features food from local sources which had not been transported by all those awful carbon-fueled trucks, the Cheney room's food was even fresher because it was right out back foraging in the garbage immediately before being harvested.

/try the Lawyer soup.

Patriotism used to mean willing to slay whatever threatens freedom, submition to the law and if necessary the judgement of ones peers. Then a significant minority decided it ment "believed in our kind of magic." If only there were some way to force them to adhere strongly to their ideals and deny them the fruits of the institutions they would denegrate. Their suffering and ignoble ends would be most satisfying.

Bloody William: ... However, there's been some pretty ridiculous stuff lately about Obama and MLK and just some... overly enthusiastic fanboyism about him. ... Yes, it's inspirational, but even I (an avowed and shameless liberal who greatly supports Obama) thinks this is going nuts.

Obama can *use* this power for good -- I want him to visit an inner-city school some day. After a few minutes of the rock star treatment, he should give a speech:

"America is changing, with every passing year the culture at large will accept y'all more and more, so by all means be proud of who you are and where you came from. Having said that, look at what it took for me to achieve what I have: hard work, and lots of it. There is plenty of brain power, creativity, and even genius in this community, capability that America desperately needs. So open your farking math and science books and study hard. Applying yourself to your studies doesn't mean you're not black anymore, it won't turn you into a country music listening cracker who thinks Larry the Cable Guy is funny. America needs you, and there are well-paying technical jobs to be had."

I'll be a little disappointed if he doesn't do this. I'm an engineer, and because it seems like everyone's been majoring in finance for the last 25 years, most non-IT technical people I run across are either in their mid-40s or older, or are here on visas...

Darconix: This business owner deserves the backlash. If he's too stupid to understand that wealthy people (his clientele) don't want to hand over their money to a socialist, then he's too stupid to stay in business.

Durr, it's a White House themed restaurant, and there's bound to be political divisions, silly dimwit....So either he caters to the all his smart AND wealthy clientele who'd otherwise notice a questionably missing Obama plaque, or he caters to the 8 email cry biatchy friends of yours in the article who still can't get over it.

But hey if fark.com isn't enough for you to whine in, I guess you better hurry and email him too. Run puppy, run!

Darconix: This business owner deserves the backlash. If he's too stupid to understand that wealthy people (his clientele) don't want to hand over their money to a socialist, then he's too stupid to stay in business. Not to mention this little gem FTA:

"I'm not a politician, I'm a restaurateur," he said. "But because I do a lot of things with a presidential theme, I put his name on the room because it's history. If an American can come from a history of slavery and go forward to be president, that shows we are moving forward."

The closest Obama ever got to slavery was when he invoked it in his speech on race. None of Obama's ancestors were ever slaves, but I suppose it's typical of liberals to play loose and fast with the facts.

Oh really, Obama's and my relatives didn't fight with William Wallace because we weren't slaves to the English!

Denying Obama's proud Scottish ancestry is a disgusting use of your freedom of speech, good day sir!

Yea I get it. My primary point was regarding active campaigning for candidates. I see it all the time. Local, regional and national elections. Same goes for using the Jesus fish in advertising. It's no big deal but seems bad for business.
