"I don't quiet understand how he represents hope for black people," said Deric Muhammad, leader of the Ministry of Justice.

maybe he'll help turn the public schools around so that maybe the local journalists will learn how to spell.

There's something very wrong about being "under fire" for comparing yourself to MLK.

kavoelker 2009-01-30 10:57:03 AM
While I do understand that Obama does represent a lot for the black community, i was under the belief that the "change" he stood for was not "change" for black people. I'm pretty sure it was change in general, a change in Washington and a change in the country.

I think Mayor White's one error was choosing two black leaders for the flier... I'm pretty sure Mayor White was saying he stood for hope for our city.. not just the black community of the city.

I agree people are trying to read to much into it.

Dr. King's Dream was for the black community.
President Obama's Change is for OUR COUNTRY (Not the black community).
Mayor White's Hope is for the city.. (not the black community)

i should have said "for more then the".... that said, his Dream had to do more with the black community then Obama's Hope did. My point is, I agree with the quote that people are reading more in to it then intended.

I don't think he personally designed the ad.

Besides. He did bring hope to all the Katrina refugees when they had no where to go.

It is truly disgusting and pathetic.

WTF is the "Ministry of Justice" and why should I care if their feelings are hurt?

I sure hope MSNBC does a follow up on how "some people" find Deric Muhammad to be a whiny biatch.

If you want to read into it more than that, then we welcome it," said "Sonny" Messiah Jiles, the publisher of The Defender.

Me too! lol

Ah well, it's not an ad that I would ever approve (assuming I'm not trying to sabotoge a guy) but yes, people need to lighten the fark up also.

And I love how eager some folks are to fake some outrage - but not thinking it through. Really, it's offensive to be compared to MLK? It might be a poor comparison, but finding the comparison actually offensive by default sends a whole other message.

People...I think it's dangerous to be comparing Obama to MLK, Lincoln and Kennedy. All three men were assassinated. Do we really want to go there?

There are enough crackpots out there and I wouldn't be surprised if one of them REALLY wants to cement Obama to those three by fulfilling that comparison.

Just be careful with it is all I'm saying. I didn't vote for Obama, but the thought is creepy, disturbing and it makes my skin crawl.

How about it's just idiotic?

MLK fought for civil rights. Obama is just reaping the rewards of that fight.

FTA

"I think a lot of people that know me know that I would never compare myself to Dr. King or President Obama," White said. "No one can say they've heard me say that I deserve to be compared to either one of them."

Mayor White is making sure that you should not compare him to MLK or Obama, as if is a bad thing!? WTF? Time for some real politicians, I am getting tired of all of the backtracking, even when there was noting wrong has been done. \

FTA

White said he had not seen the ad and that no disrespect was intended at all, as the purpose was to show tribute to the two great leaders.....

The Defender's publisher said it designed the ad, but White's campaign gave its approval.

Why would you give your approval on the advertisement without looking at it first? It's the same as when at the party conventions; when they play popular musics over the PA, without the artist approval, they are just making it too easier for the opposition attack ads.

k4mi 2009-01-30 03:20:43 PM
at least it didn't say The Great WHITE Hope.

Seriously, speaking as a Houstonian, Mayor White is a joke.
Him going to Washington would prove what has already been prooven time and time again. That Washington is full of idiots that don't know their ass from a hole in the ground. We need to send the UHIA lady after the lot of them if they don't get their shiat together.
That would threaten me to action.

The whole Rosa Parks thing is overblown. Urban kids these days fight over who gets to ride in the back of the bus. If it hadn't been one of the few times the black community was able to divide the dominant hegemony and play Northern prejudice against Southern tradition, we'd have long forgotten all about it.
