Even the most ardent partisan Democrats seem to have acted like it was only a matter of time, so how was it this guy - who it seems no one ever liked in the first place - get elected governor?

You do realize that the only reason Blagojevich won his first primary was because of the people south of I-80. If he didn't have all that support from south Illinois he wouldn't be governor.

Cook county and some of the far southern counties voted to keep Rod in 2006. Those of us in Sangamon county (where the actual capitol is) knew better.

Yep. Illinois is basically two states. South of 80 has more in common with Missouri than Chicago. But since Chicagoland has something like 80% of Illinois' population, and since everyone in the area listens to our local benevolent dictator, Daley gets to play kingmaker.
