He's from Chicago. This is what Chicago people do; mock everyone else for not thinking two feet of snow every weekend is standard practice. And D.C. residents, myself included, have every right to be mocked for our joint ineptness when it snows in our city.

Though it was solid ice this morning. Had to skate to work.

I mock people in DC who take the day off work, and I drive 12 miles from my house here to work.

Well, he's right. Schools have been closed for two days now because of an inch of snow and a little ice. Everyone is in the office, but most people came late or will leave early.

Word.

How tough is Chicago when it comes to the weather? Well let's put it this way: When I lived there; there were days when the temprature and wind combined to make it so cold that literally 10-15 secs after I stepped outside I'd have icicles hanging from my moustache caused by the moisture in my breath feezing to them.

On Such days the sidewalks were just as crowded with predestrians and they were on a sunny Spring day (which in Chicago is early June). If you stopped one of those bustling pedestrians and inquired about the weather they MIGHT have allowed as how it was a "mite nippy" that day.

The reason schools were closed was not because of snow, but because of ice. We have had freezing rain here in the DC area non-stop from 5pm last night until 9am this morning. The parking lot where I live was a sheet of ice. No salt, no sand, nothing. The sidewalks are even worse. Unless you want every kid falling and cracking their skulls open and school buses sliding off roads and into trees, they did the right thing by closing schools.

I refuse to drive in DC when it snows now. Twice last winter cars next to me on the road skidded into cars in front of them (barely missing me. These people don't know how to drive when it snows (or even when it doesn't snow some may say).

So instead I took the metro, which had a 20-30 min delay due to a station closure in Bethesda!

As of this morning, not much was closed in DC, including the schools.

The surrounding 'burbs? Yes.

The the city proper?

No. Perhaps some of the private ones were, but DC public schools and most of the colleges are open.

It's not a problem for the natives, the problem is with the newest crop on first timers who have never seen snow except on a TV. Asian women in over powered Mercedes sedans who believe that since it's dangerous they should speed up to get off the road more quickly.

i grew up in NY and moved down here to the DC area a few years back, and he is spot on. people here FREAK OUT at the hint of freezing rain, and by and large have no idea how to drive in it. so they shut everything down. but hey, i can always use a day off!

The First-crotchfruit are probably thrilled.

Meh.. it all depends on where you're from. I am about 3.5 hours south east of Chicago we got about a foot of snow last night. I would have no problem going out driving. The Sibling once lived in Birmingham, they got an inch of snow and when he got to work there was NO ONE there. The whole building was locked. The whole city shut down. The niece and nephew had to go to 4 different yards to get enough snow for a snowman.

PoopStain: I've driven in Chicago and DC during rush hour. DC has the worst traffic I've ever seen, and I live in California. I can't imagine what it's like if there's snow.

You don't want to be in it. The highway system is nearly dysfunctional on a day with perfect commuting weather (dry and overcast, i.e., no sun to blind people). Throw in a couple of raindrops or snowflakes and everything stops.

If you can't get anywhere, why even try to go in to work? Might as well work from home (and I do, often).

I had a corporate apartment in Ballston. The metro stop was right there in our lobby. I was with DoD at the time in Crystal City. So it was very easy to get up, go to work, go to lunch, and come home without ever stepping outside.

Great when the weather was bad but it made me feel like a cockroach.

Posted this in another thread, but since this one is greenlit, I'll repeat it here:

If school was in session for all these areas around here, traffic would be total gridlock. Kids wouldn't get to school, and people wouldn't get to work, until noon.

/seriously, it's not the worries of a little snow it's the traffic problems caused by it

So farking true. In my city we have hordes of these drivers who have no idea what to do when snow falls. Mind you, they're terrible drivers no matter what the weather is like.

Considering Ottawa is currently expecting almost 25cm of snow by tomorrow, amidst one of the worst bus strikes this city has ever seen, I find it hard to dig deep into my heart and offer the sympathy DC residents feel they so rightly deserve.

damageddude [TotalFark] 2009-01-28 03:09:17 PM
He'd love my town in NJ. They closed schools before 6AM as the snow was changing to rain, just as forecasted for our area (we're not too far from the shore). I took my son sledding by our local school about 20 min after classes would have begun. Even the local roads in our development had already been plowed as was the parking lot and sidewalks around the school. He had to stop sledding after a few minutes as he got drenched by the rain and puddles.

I could have seen a delayed opening, but the whole day? I really think this was a mercy closing as we haven't had much snow the last few winters. The worst part is that the rain and warming temps pretty much washed everything away so he's been stuck inside anyway.

midwest snow is a lot different than east coast snow.

midwest is powdery and snowy.

east coast snow is wet, sludgy, and often much more unpredictable in how it will effect the roads.

Hah. Around here we have the same problem.

With rain.

(of course it COULD be that our road crews are so pathetic that if you can't see well in front of you, you're risking ripping your axle off by hitting a hugefarkingmongous pothole)

So to this point. I am from Ohio so I am used to some snow, they didn't cancel school much for it. Now I live in TN, they canceled school due to RAIN! The other day they canceled because of cold, and it was only like 7F. Not that bad at all.

I am with Obama on this one.
