Ahmadinejad had harsh words for George Bush, who he said "has gone into the trash can of history with a very black and shameful file full of treachery and killings. He left and, God willing, he will go to hell."

This is outrageous. I'm sure that not a single person here would agree with this!

Too much brain power to waste on this one. The sad thing is that it could happen! I could really see our government doing this. Thank god Dennis Kucinich didn't get the Dems nod or it already would have happened.

And yes I think that Kucinich would have beaten McCain

Maybe he wants us to say we are sorry for not make Members Only jackets anymore?

Whether or not I agree with the sentiment, I am not in agreement with a foreign leader saying it. I hated W, but he was still a US president, and those words reflect a foreign policy attitude toward our country and that isn't a good thing.

He's just posturing. For the most part the Iranian people are open to the US and want to have a constructive dialogue. In order to get reelected and reinforce his conservative, religious, paranoid base, Ahmadinejad needs to pull off a Rudy Gulliani style "noun, verb, Great Satan" in every breath.

Of course, he's not really the one in control of the country anyway, so Obama might just ignore him and make his case more directly to the Iranians.

No I understand that, but he is the one who makes headlines and Iranians aren't the only ones who read those headlines. I know he's posturing, but I'm not going to cheer on his anti-Bush rhetoric just because I'm anti-Bush myself.

Well, I would hope not, but I know it's not a perfect world. Since there are a great number of anti-Bush people, maybe I'll at least find myself in the plurality.

Diogenes [TotalFark] 2009-01-28 11:12:52 AM
It's just more of the honor-based, grudge-holding mentality that permeates society there (not speaking strictly of Iran). It's little wonder we can't make progress toward peace when we can't move beyond centuries-old tribal and religious grievances.

GAT_00 [TotalFark] 2009-01-28 11:28:53 AM
Yeah, I don't think he should get one. Demanding an apology is trying to keep things in the Bush years, and that is absolutely what doesn't need to be done. He just needs to be told that those years are over, and if you insist on making me apologize for what someone else did, you're going to be waiting a while.

Man, I agree he's a dick and all, but way to look like as much of a dick yourself, dickface. I mean, that's exactly the type of rhetoric Bush himself used.

Well,, diplomacy is the only way the U.S. can deal with Iran.

Sure, we can bomb them into the bronze age, but the best intelligence in the world would never find all their uranium enrichment sites.

The U.S. does not have the military ability to wage any kind of effective ground offensive against Iran - they would soundly hand us our arse. We couldn't even effectively take over a third-world divided nation that is far closer to us then Iran. Bush did more dama than most people know - he squandered U.S military power and worst yet, he tipped our hand to the world that we are not all-powerful and can be effectively resisted.

The best solution for the Iran predicament is to lay low over there, and wage a public-relations campaign against Ahmadinejad... anti-hardline sentiment is already on the rise over there, particularly amongst younger university students (military fighting age). Ahmadinejad will fall of his own radical narrow-sighted accord, given the right environment. U.S posturing and threats only work to undermine this trend and makes more Iranians take a hard line against the West.

Now the U.S. is not controlled by those hell-bent to profit as much as possible from everlasting war, we have a chance.

LegacyDL 2009-01-28 11:38:06 AM
Ahmadinejad should take what Obama is giving him, seeing as how Obama is risking what fragile foreign affair experience he has in trying to do something revolutionary that could possibly benefit both Iran and the US in terms of relations.

But the Iranian government chooses to hold onto old hatreds. You'd think that people in general would let water pass underneath the bridge and learn to forgive for past transgressions.

Can't say I disagree with him on this assessment.

Overall, Ahmedinejad is as entertaining as he is frightening. As much as I love watching him rant in the media, it kind of scares me knowing that he has political power and potentially nuclear weapons.

Still, the Big A is an entertaining man.

He's not the head of state, nor does he command Iran's army. Khameni does, and he doesn't even like Ahmadinejad.

While I don't agree with your whole premise, I do think that we could really make great strides in a psychological, non-military campaign in these countries. Look at al Qaeda, they've murdered their way into rejection by the Muslim world, but it has taken a long time. We should have harped on that from the get-go... eroding popular support for extremism by exposing it as the poison it is.

Does anyone else get a flavor of Rush Limbaugh when listening to Ahmadinejad, only replacing "Democrats" with "Great Satan"?

I swear, every time I hear him ranting (and it always sounds like ranting to me), that's all I can think of: an Iranian Rush Limbaugh.

With less weight, obviously.
