Considering Dylan lost all respect for people that saw him as some kind of "voice of a generation" 35 years ago, I say good for Bob. Further twist the knife into the stupid boomer generation.

First of all, this is a cooperative. Pretty interesting idea.

Second of all, who the fark cares? It's Blowin in the Wind, he's all but denounced the song anyways

I doubt that he did it for the money. I'd imagine Mr. Zimmerman has more than enough.

Good lord, subby, Don't scare me like that! The combo of that headline and the "sad" tag lead me to believe the rest of the day was going to be a tear-fest!

Instead I click to find The Bob has simply made a public decision that benefits everyone involved all round. This was news? Really?

/Thanks for nearly spoiling my day

Dylan has absolutely nothing left to prove with his career, and I have no problem with him allowing an organization that meets his own personal standards to use a 45 year old song in an ad campaign.

Also, is he even getting paid for it? The article doesn't mention anything about his pay, though I suppose he must get some some amount of royalties.

Some people were accusing him of selling out as early as 1965 (new window).

What's the big deal? IIRC, the song had already been used in ads years ago about gun violence prevention.

I know there was already some commercial last year that used "Times They are a Changin'" and was on all the time. Like the rest of his generation Bob Dylan has sold out his ideals for a quick buck.

If you people actually knew anything about Bob Dylan you would know he has always been a careerist and not a crusader.

I idolize the guy's work, but the idea that he has ever been some principled selfless ideologue is preposterous.

About eight years ago, Dylan licensed The Bank of Montreal to use "The Times They Are A-Changin'" and in 2004, his songs and he appeared in Victoria's Secret commercials, and just over a year ago, he was in a farking Cadillac Escalade commercial. (Not-so-similarly, more socially-conscious artists who haven't sold out and are infinitely less financially stable like The Thermals have turned down offers from Hummer.)

pagansexgod 2009-01-28 11:37:50 AM
US musician Bob Dylan, 67, allowed the British Co-Operative Group to use his famous 1963 protest song Blowin' In The Wind in a television advert to burnish its old-fashioned image

Because nothing says we are not old fashioned more than a 46 year old protest song about war Britain had very little involvement by an artish who became socially irrelevant over 40 years ago. And wouldnt the times they are a changin' be more apt?

Eh, so not the entire generation is worthless. However, there are many aspects that cause my teeth to grind. for this example, the persistant belief that the generation was going to "really change things", whatever that means. I see Dylan doing this as, in some ways, giving people the finger for all the crap he went through in the 60's and 70's.

Every artist as a song or two I consider lame.

Part of the reason I stopped going to his concerts for five years is I got sick of hearing this crappy song.

Bruce has 'Rosalita'
Bob has 'Blowin in the Wind'
Metallica has their entire catalog
But 'Fly By Night' still rocks!

I came to say that - The song was played out not long after it was released and he has no attachment to it anyway

I always thought that Dylan doing the Victoria's Secret commercial was brilliant.

He's famous for saying flippantly in an interview in '65 that if he were to appear in a commercial it would be for women's underwear.

40 years later he goes and makes good on that promise.

Dylan can't be judged according such simplistic constructs as "selling out." Certainly a band like the Rolling Stones or The Who* can, but not Dylan.

*see what I did there
