Dylan has absolutely nothing left to prove with his career, and I have no problem with him allowing an organization that meets his own personal standards to use a 45 year old song in an ad campaign.

Also, is he even getting paid for it? The article doesn't mention anything about his pay, though I suppose he must get some some amount of royalties.

About eight years ago, Dylan licensed The Bank of Montreal to use "The Times They Are A-Changin'" and in 2004, his songs and he appeared in Victoria's Secret commercials, and just over a year ago, he was in a farking Cadillac Escalade commercial. (Not-so-similarly, more socially-conscious artists who haven't sold out and are infinitely less financially stable like The Thermals have turned down offers from Hummer.)

Eh, so not the entire generation is worthless. However, there are many aspects that cause my teeth to grind. for this example, the persistant belief that the generation was going to "really change things", whatever that means. I see Dylan doing this as, in some ways, giving people the finger for all the crap he went through in the 60's and 70's.

Every artist as a song or two I consider lame.

Part of the reason I stopped going to his concerts for five years is I got sick of hearing this crappy song.

I always thought that Dylan doing the Victoria's Secret commercial was brilliant.

He's famous for saying flippantly in an interview in '65 that if he were to appear in a commercial it would be for women's underwear.

40 years later he goes and makes good on that promise.


Dylan can't be judged according such simplistic constructs as "selling out." Certainly a band like the Rolling Stones or The Who* can, but not Dylan.
