(SFGate) Silly Why can't the Berkeley public library get their scanner machines serviced? Because the maintenance company hasn't signed the Nuclear Free Berkeley Act. "The act is meant to be a blow against nuclear war." Wait...what?   (sfgate.com) divider line 151

good for 3M, i hope they come out with a nuclear book scanner prototype just to fark with them

Did the scotch tape company start lobbing nukes at someone and I missed it?

3M has nukes? Who knew their CEO has entered the world of cartoon supervillianry?

Berkeley must be for crazy people, like what Mecca is for Islam or Jerusalem is for Christians or what Kentucky is for fried food fans.

We take it very seriously that Berkeley . . . stands out among cities internationally.

You certainly do.

Nuklear free berkeley act? The hell man, I thought the subby was making some joke.

Does that mean that if Domino's is asked to delivered pizza to a meeting, they have to agree not to develop nuclear weapons?

devildog123 [TotalFark] 2009-01-28 08:52:41 AM
And I bet people in Berkely wonder why the rest of the country views them as brainless lunatics, right up there with the red-state whackos living in the mid-west.

liverpool1892 2009-01-28 08:53:20 AM
I think the best part of this is that the discussions about all of this occur in the Peace and Justice Commission .

Domino's? You've got to be shiatting me. Not with their history. No way do they get into Berkeley unless they sign the "Single-Payer Organic Fair-Trade Sustainable Abortions In Berkeley Right Up 'Til The Baby Crowns" measure.

Not to mention, it would be impossible to run a city without companies that don't have a hand in making nuclear war possible. No IBM or Microsoft in Berkley now?

Shame on all of you for supporting nuclear war.

Can someone explain why they are requiring 3M to sign this nuclear free thing? Do all companies that do business in Berkley have to sign it or does 3M have some impact on the nuclear community that I dont know about?

THIS pretty much every major vendor has a piece of the Industrial Military Complex in their list of customers.

7 scanners maintained by some poor subcontractor to 3M. Unless these are gold plated mega scanners, I'll bet 3M ends up regretting getting this contract at all.

They run a farking reactor there, don't they?

The are a huge conglomerate with many product lines. Many of which are dual use. Who knows what adhesives or chemicals are used the nuclear program.

If the Berkly law is broad enough, just providing IT services to some budget analysts unclassified PC on some base with Nukes can get you disqualified. I haven't read it, I don't know.

But given the nature of how contracting and sub contracting works, Berkely could well have legislated itself out of any services at all unless they hire their support as government employees. Oh the joys of doing that for the tax payer.

They 3M probably will, 7 scanners is peanuts to 3M and would likely be subcontracted out anyway unless these are some mega-scanners. Customers like these end up costing you money.

Almost all nuclear warheads are held together w. scotch tape. It's common knowledge

Star Trek IV came out in 1986.

Coincidence?

I think not!

There's a difference between pro-nuke and anti-Berkeley.

I, however, am pro-nuke. I think nuclear proliferation is the fastest way to world peace.

On reflection, sticking to your principles as some of these folks are trying to do is what made America what it is today.

No doubt at times during the Revolutionary War citizens of our own country thought those seeking independence were whack jobs.

They may seem crazy right now, but the spirit they display is admirable, IMHO.

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2009-01-28 09:18:55 AM
I expect 3M's membership in the Military Industrial Complex is not the problem. There are constitutional problems with a city punishing a company for doing business with the feds, and Berkeley could get slapped if the city said "defense contractors need not apply" or "defense contractors need not apply unless they disclose what sort of classified work they are doing." TFA says 3M sells to many other countries. Odds are, some of those countries have nuclear programs.

If I ran 3M, I'd say "screw you, Berkeley" and refuse to sign as a matter of principle whether or not I supported nuclear war.

We're not pro-nuke - we're anti-retard.

Making everyone who takes a shiat in your city sign a form saying you won't make something that might get resold to some guy who read a book about nukes in the 5th grade is retarded.

[/hyperbole]

FapJack 2009-01-28 09:21:39 AM
I wonder if that library has any books that mention the N word.
The more I think about it the more my head hurts. They get nothing from any company that does business with the USAF or China?

The South "stuck to its principles" of enslaving Africans. They should be admired, according to you. Or do you only admire the winners, who clearly picked the correct things to believe in because they were as smart as you are?

I don't think he's talking about the engineering grads, but the imbecilic city officials. Comprehension. Yours needs work.

2/10. At least it's quick.

The only reason we all haven't been killed in a nuclear war in the past 20 years is because of this law Berkley passed.

There were once many supermarkets in Berkeley according to Gingsberg back in 1955. Now, not so much.

I have reflected on it and I think they are being retarded. If you are a university and don't want to be part of the nuclear machine, don't teach nuclear physics at your university.

No joke. There are signs on the road when you get to Berkeley that say, "Nuclear Free Zone." It's ruled by a bunch of people who have never given up any of the illogical part of their childhood idealism. They actually make the SF Board of Supervisors look reasonable and conservative in contrast.
