"Couldn't you be any more obvious than that, Rob. How about, I don't know-- the Beatles? How about f*$king- f%#king Beethoven? Track one, side one of the Fifth Symphony? How can someone who has no interest in music own a record store?"

Wait? Phil Collins was hated or his musical talented was ignored? What the f*ck is that bullsh*t? He's the most covered artist from the 80's. No one, and I mean, no one would doubt he is or ever was cool. If they do, they're trolls seeking attention.

-1 for a crappy top 10 list.

\Will now spend the next five minutes listening to "In the Air Tonight"

Ya know what? I like what I like. I don't need to justify it to some tool who choses his music based on how fscking TRENDY it makes him look.

My collection has Journey, Zep, Abney Park, Aerosmith, E-type, video game remixes, and old school demoscene. If you don't like it, then make your own collection of things YOU like.

/loved the Star Wars prequels, too

And just what the fark exactly is wrong with Bob Seger?

I had to give my old man a lift once, I had Nashville Pussy in the player, and "Nutbush City Limits" came on, he looked at me like I was from Mars.

I'd rather slam my head in a car door a few times, than listen to the Bee Gees.

Phil Collins is a decent drummer; he just needs to shut up.

REO Speedwagon can eat hot death.

CheddarPants [TotalFark] 2009-01-27 05:08:51 PM
Neil Diamond - Was always cool.

Styx - They don't suck, but they don't rawk, either.

REO Speedwagon - Slightly better than Styx.

Hall & Oates - A couple of silly songs, but never sucked.

Journey - Much, much cooler than subby can ever hope to be.

Cat Stevens - Bogus.

The Bee Gees - Have always been awesome.

Bob Seger - OK. Don't care to hear "Old Time Rock 'n Roll" ever again, though.

Billy Joel - Cheesy, but important.

Phil Collins - Sucks balls without Genesis.

With the exception of Cat Stevens, all of these artists are represented in my collection with either greatest hits packages or albums.
I do celebrate the entire catalogs of Seger, Joel, and Genesis.

/Feelin' That Way/Anytime is Journey's greatest song

hipsters can blow me. granted, i like a lot of music that would place me into that scene, but i still hate hipsters.

remember the hipsters that loved awful new wave or bad punk, or ska? where are they now? ill take yes, journey, and styx anyday over whatever trendy new band pitchfork creams over.

with that said, i still love the strokes.

CheddarPants:

Journey - Much, much cooler than subby can ever hope to be.

When Journey was popular in the 80's, only teen girls and the like thought they were cool. Guys I knew basically considered them to be a joke with a great guitarist (and band). In the 80's they were Major Label garbage. How Journey has suddenly become cool, I'll never understand.

AdolfOliverPanties [TotalFark] 2009-01-27 06:22:30 PM
Neil Diamond - Cool.

Styx - Lame. That a straight man like Dennis DeYoung can make a band sound far more gay than Freddie Mercury did Queen is amazing.

REO Speedwagon - Pleasant, a few decent songs.

Hall & Oates - Butt pirates.

Journey - Fine before Steve Perry came along.

Cat Stevens - Yawn. Good lyrics though.

The Bee Gees - Were great before disco.

Bob Seger - OK. Don't care to hear "Old Time Rock 'n Roll" ever again, though. I'll agree with that.

Billy Joel - Horrible schmatlzy crap from day one of his career.

Phil Collins - No Jacket Required? Try No-Doz Required. Sucks.

Galaxy of Prawns 2009-01-27 06:24:11 PM
Styx, Billy Joel, and Cat Stevens are awesome all-around, and Phil Collins had his moments (particularly on Face Value). Most of the others on that list I can take or leave. But not the Bee Gees.

Seriously, fark the Bee Gees.

jj325 [TotalFark] 2009-01-27 06:28:41 PM
REO Speedwagon before "Hi Infidelity" rocked...then Richrath left and they ceased to exist for me

Styx was fun---always hated the Dennis DeYoung songs though

Hall=Sucks Oates=Cool

Phil Collins--Ruined Genesis but his solo stuff wasn't that bad

soseussme 2009-01-27 06:30:09 PM
I can't believe he cites "Turn the Page" as a decent song, much less a good one. If life on the road is so rough, Bob, get a freakin' desk job. Boo-hoo! It's tough being a star! Waaah!

CheddarPants: Neil Diamond - Was always cool.

Hell. Farking. Yes.

Before I clicked the link, I said, "immediate FAIL if no Diamond." Pleasantly surprised to see a list get it right for once.

He's wrong about Diamond, though. No one pulls off his songs any better than the man himself. That's part of why American Idol sucks so much ass. Real performers don't get through, only cookie cutter dime-a-dozen pop shiatfaces.

Yup hipsters are idiots.
Hall and Oates are great regardless of what you think, there is NOTHING WRONG with good pop music. PLUS their shows are excellent.

The only person/gourp on that list that I can not tolerate is Bob Seger and I even like two of his songs but anything past Hollywood Nights? That's a turnin'-offin'.
And 'Turn the Page'? Nothing but pretentious stinky cheese.

this article proves once again that the vast majority of music snobs are not musicians as all the musicians i have ever known have at least grudging respect for all those bands

every band/artist listed in the article has a fair share of song writing talent

A couple of weekends ago, I stumbled through the streets of New Orleans with six of my closest friends. Their music taste is, to put it mildly, eclectic. All but one, my wife, would probably self identify as a music snob.

During a drunken Bourbon Street ramble, we ended up in a bar where they were playing Billy Joel's "Piano Man". Every damn one of us sang along.

John Buck 41 2009-01-27 06:47:20 PM
If I never, never, never, never hear 'Old Time Rock 'N Roll' again it'll be far too soon. Not a knock on Seger; he's cool, but that song blows hard.

THIS x 1000. I know a lot of great musicians, and none of them waste their time with tearing down someone else's art. (I'm waving at FARK's resident OLD music snob...)

That's always the thing, musicians tend to have broader tastes than a lot of music uh fans. Also there's the matter of acknowledging talent.

Ok for all you journey fans, repeat after me:

na na na na na
na na na na na
na na na na na

That's good songwritin' there.

Ncoded 2009-01-27 07:09:21 PM
Neil Diamond - Meh, couple of good songs but mostly not my thing. Excellent writer though.

Styx - Crystal Ball will live in infamy but that is a personal thing I suppose.

REO Speedwagon - Ridin the storm out, most of the rest is a brain ache.

Hall & Oates - I have always enjoyed a few of the songs but the 6th grade ruined "private eyes"

Journey - Fine before Steve Perry came along. I'm gonna go with this.

Cat Stevens - the album Buddha & the Chocolate box and a few other songs are embedded in memory for eternity, that is both good and bad. Buddha album art from the original vinyl copy was cool.

The Bee Gees - take it or leave it ~meh

Bob Seger - I am so burnt out on every Seger song, it will be too soon if I ever hear another one.

Billy Joel - I was never big on Joel but I don't hate him.

Phil Collins - Phil was alright in the early genesis years, I like Abacab and Duke but little has impressed my from Phil since then except land of confusion but he only sang that if you belive the story behind it.

/I don't own any albums by any of these people/bands except the copy of the self titled "Genesis" album that ended up in my collection

NorCalLos 2009-01-27 07:10:12 PM
The author self-identified as a music snob. That makes him a wannabe music snob, which is less than or equal to a hipster. I agree with those who said most of these artists are already respected by people who know music and are open and honest about it and not hung up wondering "what would someone think of me if they found my ipod?" I know a guy that goes through all the "embarrassing" songs on his ipod and changes the artist names to the names of "hot new bands you've never heard of."

No Jacket Required by Phil Collins is fun.

Ant 2009-01-27 07:20:48 PM
Neil Diamond - Blah. My wife likes him, but I swear it's only to annoy me.

Styx - They're OK

REO Speedwagon - Yuck

Hall & Oates - OK

Journey - Fun music

Cat Stevens - I really like

The Bee Gees - Fun music

Bob Seger - yuck

Billy Joel - I like

Phil Collins - Excellent drummer. Not the best Genesis singer, but did OK. Solo career is meh

PRE-DISCO Bee Gees

Goonie_Goo_Goo: PRE-DISCO Bee Gees

This. Don't get me wrong, as a 3-7 year old during the Saturday Night Fever/Stayin' Alive/Grease revolution, I was a big fan of the Bee Gees, but the pre-disco stuff-which I only discovered much much later (last year)- has all the songwriting/melody/harmony of the disco stuff without the overexposure/overproduction.

TeddyRay 2009-01-27 07:38:27 PM
Neil Diamond - Love him

Styx - Renegade is one of my all-time favorite songs

REO Speedwagon - Take it on the Run also a great song

Hall & Oates - Meh.

Journey - I freaking HATE Journey

Cat Stevens - Not really familiar enough with him to have an honest opinion

The Bee Gees - They're okay. They wrote songs that everybody liked, right?

Bob Seger - I like him alright. His music makes me want to lay down on the couch on a rainy day and take a nap.

Billy Joel - Love him.

Phil Collins - Eh. This is actually my favorite Phil Collins song, and it's a cover...of three songs: Link (new window)

angusyoung 2009-01-27 07:43:47 PM
Styx - They had their moments.

REO Speedwagon - Ditto.

Hall & Oates - They had some awesome songs. Probably should've stayed away from the music videos though.

Journey - Quite possibly one of the best bands ever.

Cat Stevens - Screw him.

The Bee Gees - Not bad. They probably don't deserve to be as maligned as they are.

Bob Seger - Poor man's Springsteen. Night Moves is still a fantastic song, the climactic scene of American Pop still gives me chills.

Billy Joel - Corny and really went downhill in the mid-to-late 80's, but a great songwriter

Phil Collins - No thank you.

Walkens Syndrome 2009-01-27 07:45:44 PM
Neil Diamond - Yeah, kitschy, but fun. Good songwriter. Pitchfork Crowd has always know this.

Styx - cheesey and weak.

REO Speedwagon - blah. Not even Bad Company

Hall & Oates - eh....

Journey - just plain weak.

Cat Stevens - ok songwriter.

The Bee Gees - amazing.

Bob Seger - white trash picnic!

Billy Joel - really not horrible

Phil Collins - overrated even as a drummer.

Journey? Really? I mean come on! People mention them in the same breath as Zep and I want to hurl.

And when the hell was Bob Segar not cool?

Bob Seger's Smokin' OP's contains a few of rock's greatest moments,
before his overproduced phase.

Bo Diddley, Turn On Your Love Light, Let It Rock and Heavy Music
are just goddam great rock and roll at its finest.

Yes, well, I got wasted on Bourbon Street and wound up doing lines off the ass of a serious skank in my hotel room. So we both did embarassing things there, the difference being that I'm smart enough not to be proud of it.
