They're the biggest disappointment in the history of rock music, IMHO. The blue album and Pinkerton are genius, then they made a bunch of sellout, poppy garbage that is basically an insult to their original fanbase. Everyone listens to their new stuff once or twice on the chance they could be good again, but it's never even close.

I think the blue album has an argument for best album of the 1990s.

A strong sophomore album such as Pinkerton (I love it, all of it) is a rare beast. Thus, I feel that they are less of a disappointment than many awesome debut / lousy sophomore album groups out there, even if the rest is a bummer.

I have bought, lost or had stolen, and bought the Blue Album at least 5 times, it's one of the few records that I will always own a hard copy of just in case my computer and ipod crap out at the exact same time.

/Pinkerton is almost as good

Killer Cars [TotalFark] 2009-01-27 04:24:26 PM
I think Pinkerton is pretty good, but unless you're a Weezer fanboy (which I'm not) it takes awhile to get used to.

The "God damn you half-Japanese girls/You do it to me every time" line made me cringe especially.

I love this verse from the new album:

Back in 1991, I wasn't havin' any fun,
'Till my roommate said "come on and put a brand new record on",
Had a baby on it, he was naked on it,
Then I heard the chords that broke the chains I had upon me,
Got together with my bros, in some rehearsal studios,
Then we played our first rock show and watched the fan base start to grow,
We signed with David, gave us dough to make a record all our own,
The song come on the radio, now people go: this is the song

NorCalLos 2009-01-27 04:38:44 PM
Pinkerton is the most visceral album in my ipod that is not Mars Volta or At The Drive-In, and thus my favorite Weezer album. The subsequent albums have had some good songs on them (all the singles with the exception of Beverly Hills and We Are All On Drugs), but they could all be squeezed onto an EP or one LP at the most.

Damn, I guess that's what it's must sound like to have stuck with Weezer even after "Green Album" dropped. I think Matt Sharp wrote all the Weezer songs on the first two albums.

The song "Don't Let Go" is enough for me to hate the album, and it was unfortunately my first Weezer album.

My g/f quickly provided me with Blue and Pinkerton to cure my disdain.

/likes Island in the Sun

That is about how I feel, except you can add "Island in the Sun" to the Green album songs and you'd have my list.

If you listen to Weezer, it's because you are too lazy to search beyond terrestrial radio and billboard lists for your music. Expand your search, and you will find some actual, talented bands out there that will blow your f'kn mind. You don't have to settle for the midpoint of terrible and mediocre.

/ Weak lyrics, three chords and a cheesy melody is no way to go through life, son.

They're all supposed to hate Nirvana. People like Rivers can like both, but for the most part the 80's metal fans aren't too fond of Nirvana. Especially since it's established conventional wisdom that "Nirvana ended 80's hair metal".

Eh. I was a fan from the start, saw them open for Lush, blah blah blah stupid ePeen cred here, and I think The Green Album is right up there with the first. It's brash and loud and fun and catchy. Some dynamite songs and great, fun songwriting on it.

I think the blue album has an argument for best album of the 1990s.

Eh. It's a fine enough guitar pop record, quite enjoyable to listen to and still holds up fine, but best album of the 1990s? It's not even the BAND'S best album of the 1990s.

I like the blue album just fine, but it wouldn't even make my top 20 records of the 1990s. I think it's slip into the top 40, maybe.

It has no argument for tops, though.

Oh, I see. I maybe didn't get the memo, but I think what you're referring to is the musicians who were making a ton of money from hair metal that were bitter about "grunge" and alternative rock blowing up (these guys can't even tap!). Most of the fans that I know of went straight from Motley Crue, Guns, Suicidal Tendencies, etc. to Faith No More, Nirvana, Janes, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and even Weezer. Most of my friends are musicians, though, and open-minded.

Subby meant to type synonym for "initial entry in a string of message board posts" but the filter made it "Weezers".

I like the Blue album a great deal, but best of the 90's? Remember that it must contend with Beck's Mutations, Nirvana's In Utero, Rediohead's OK Computer (!!), Cake's Prolonging the Magic, Squirrl Nut Zippers' Hot, Nine Inch Nails Downward Spiral, They Might Be Giants Green, Preal Jam's... just about anything, but I'll just randomly pick No Code, Cake's Fashion Nugget, Oingo Boingo's Farewell tour.

The Blue CD kicks ass, but Best of the Nineties? That's a bold statement.

Not to mention Catherine Wheel's "Adam and Eve," Neutral Milk Hotels "In The Aeroplane Over the Sea," Smashing Pumpkins' "Siamese Dream," My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless," Green Day's "Dookie," Pavement's "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain," Public Enemy's "Fear of a Black Planet," Beastie Boys' "Check Your Head," the Flaming Lips "The Soft Bulletin," Radiohead's "The Bends," U2's "Achtung Baby," Soundgarden's "Superunknown," Smashing Pumpkins' "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness," Foo Fighters' "There Is Nothing Left to Lose," and Jane's Addiction's "Ritual De Lo Habitual," to name a few.

I'm sorry, what?

Colour and the Shape is far superior. Every track on that album is wonderful. It's my pick for "best album of the nineties". I'll grant you TiNLtL is better than most anything they put out after that (though I did like Echos, Silence, Patience and Grace).

Also, I like Neutral Milk Hotel. I've just started getting into them recently.

On the same note, while Mellon Collie was a great album, I think Siamese Dream would arguably be on my top 20 list instead for SP album of the 90s...

Green was good when it came out, because we were excited to have Weezer back. But now it's kinda watery and weak. Pinkerton is the best by far.

And Pavement sucks.

Thank you so much for THIS! I had no idea that I was so stunted until today... now my eyes (and EARS!!!) are finally open. I can now say, with adequate smugness, that every band that any of you listen to is a combo of the following:
1. Corporate
2. Sellout
3. Bland
4. Derivative

And every band that I (And M2SK, natch) listen to rules the schools. Ha ha! SUCK IT SHEEP!

You know what "to name a few" means, right?

Yes, it means the list does not purport to be all inclusive.

Look again. I listed both albums.
