Elvis was narcissistic at the end, and betrayed a Jed Clampett-like discomfort with his vast fortune. But to know him was to love him. When he went on tour, he interacted with his audience that would seem foreign to the current generation: he'd kiss babies, shake hands, give away his clothing to screaming fans, sometimes buy them things for them, meet with local politician in cities he went to, etc. He loved his fans, and his fans knew it. And his music had pathos; he was the first rock star to give his whole body, voice and soul on the stage. No one prior to the 50s had ever seen anyone do that with Southern/black/R&B music in mainstream media before. It was revolutionary at that time.

How does this compare in any way to Kanye West's performance or public behavior? Adam West is more of an entertainment king than Kanye West.

To be fair, there was only like 6 active and performing musicians at that time... the market has gone to shiat since then.

Aside from the "vast fortune" and "making music" part, that pretty much describes Andrew WK.

Have you seen a Kayne concert? There is nobody, NOBODY, who does more for the fans. I mean, Elvis may have sung songs but could he rap? It takes some skill to sing but what kind of skill does it take to speak in rhythm?

Singing takes more talent and skill than rapping.

First of all I think the guy was being sarcastic, but rapping isn't all that easy. It's not just speaking in rhythm. You need allegory, cadence, wordplay, metaphors, and rhyme schemes. Good rockers can get away was saying simple things really nicely. Real MCs (not rappers but true to hip hop emcees) who aren't too commercial generally have to be witty and smart to get props. Some of the most complex lyrical music I ever heard was hip-hop. Rapping came from beat poetry and is essentially the most poetic genre when done right. Kanye can't rap well so he doesn't count. I'd consider Tupac a better writer than Elvis. I'd say Method Man's flow is better than Elvis' singing.

jake_lex [TotalFark] 2009-01-27 01:57:52 AM
I would have really liked his last album if it wasn't for that AutoTune bullshiat. I mean, he does these brutally self-revelatory, autobiographical songs, and then makes himself sound like a damn robot singing them. It really undermined the point, I think.

Anyone can learn how to sing but rapping takes innate talent.

You should really see his SNL performance. Kayne certainly couldn't learn to sing.

People think Kayne is good because he distracts from his awful music with impressive light displays.

Since when is it cool to hate on Elvis? I always thought the King was immune to such criticism.

Rapping and singing are different so comparing the two is kinda dumb.

FTFY.

If Soulja Boy even qualifies as music, then so does Crazy Frog. There comes a time when a line must be drawn between what is art and what is simply a product.
