Oh well. The movie was good, so is the music from it.

Didn't have high hopes when we rented it (wife's idea), but I have to say, it was a well done movie... great song-writers.

Hansard used to be a regular at a club I worked at in Dublin. Decent guy, very humble about any fame he had (at that point in the mid-nineties it was pretty much The Commitments and his band, The Frames, I think).

I got to see them in Chicago. They put on a great show.

Busted that movie out last Valentine's day. Huge Success.

I highly recommend everyone go see it.

That makes me sad. I loved that movie and the soundtrack is one of my faves and I thought that the Oscar exception speech was a great moment.

At least we got a great song out of it.

Ashtrey 2009-01-26 11:49:42 AM
Here is what I took from that.

"We spent a lot of time with each other and weren't sleeping with anyone else, so we figured why not. Now we realize that we were only bangin' for convenience and decided to try and find something that will work out in the long run, but wish each other the best."

If only all break ups could end this cleanly.

I guess their relationship was much like my viewing experience of the movie. Waited an hour, nothing interesting happened, gave the DVD back.

I loved the backup band loitering around the Phil statue,
and how they only knew how to play lizzy tunes.

Oh yeah? Well that's too damn bad, buddy, because now you can't come to my birthday party. There's gonna be a bouncy castle and clowns and everything, and you're gonna be standing outside the fence going all like "C'mon man, I didn't mean it" and I'm gonna be all like "No way dude, you brought this on yourself" and you're gonna be kicking yourself, man. And we're all gonna be laughing at you, when we find the time what with all the fun we'll be having, with the bouncy castle and the clowns and all.

So there.

Yeah, I liked that too...

I wonder if they have a nickname for the Phil statue yet.

Since this thread deals with love songs, I would like to reiterate what I've been saying for years: Slayer's Raining Blood is the best love song ever.

I lasted about twenty minutes, fifteen of which were the same two stupid songs.

The person who recommended it to me is of suspect value now.

My vote is for the whole "Songs about farking" album by Big Black.

It's got a good beat you can really thrust your pelvis to... and at 35 minutes or so, it's the perfect length.

Not to say I hate all musicals but I nearly killed my mom for forcing me to sit through most of Mama Mia over the holiday. I kept saying to her, "I thought you liked me and wanted me to enjoy my visit".

I had to look it up... some call it "The Ace with the Bass" apparently.

and I forgot about Wilde's statue... "The Fag on the Crag"

and Anna Livia... "The Floozy in the Jacuzzi"

and the two old ladies on Liffey St... "The Hags with the Bags".

I love Dublin folk.

I like their version of Fog Town (new window). It's a little overblown, though.

Nobody sings that song like the Amazingly Unique Michelle Shocked. Who else could make both versions (punk AND folk) work? Epic.

I liked when Glen did it with the late (and great) Mic Christopher. It's somewhere on youtube.

Love Glen and Marketa though. Glen is such a nice guy. Wished me a happy birthday once actually haha.

He seemed like a rather large dick when I saw them at virgin mobile fest. He made the camera guy who was on stage stop filming Marketa and the way he went about it made it seem like he was the only one who deserved attention while he was on the stage.

In Once, all of the music is in the context of what is happening. In a musical, there are dance routines and the songs basically exist outside of reality. Basically, I guess the difference is, in Once, they really WOULD be singing in real life at all the points their singing. In a musical, they wouldn't be...

/Semantics...

watch closely how surreal the scene with "if you want me" is.

Also, by your definition are you saying that, except for "think," the blues brothers would not be a musical?

h0tsauce 2009-01-27 06:01:16 PM
Their relationship is none of my business of course, but knowing they were together in real life made me feel less depressed about the way the movie ended.
