She said not tonight, she has a haddock.
And she wasn't kidding either cuz in walked the biggest haddock I'd ever seen.
He was covered in mussels.

Except for "Yoda," all those songs were on the Best of Dr. Demento double-album in the late-80s. I listened to that goddamn tape until my ears bled.

Same.

Star Trekkin' came out when I was in high school. My friends and I listened to it non-stop.

Oh...and the list is seriously lacking Brian Bowers' The Scotsman.

Although I disagree with you, JerseyTim, that was a good retort. I lol'd.

/I see now what has shaped my adulthood, thank you Dr. Demento.

Without Cemetery Girls by Barnes and Barnes, I'm not sure I can get behind this list...

Fresh souls in the corn field!
/Anthony put them there.

Oh, and fans of Dr. Demento should enjoy the Mad Music Archive (new window)

It's got playlists going back to 1972, and audio of some similar shows starting in around 2005.

RocketRod [TotalFark] 2009-01-26 01:07:30 PM
94.7 KMET-FM.. FTW!

dillenger69 [TotalFark] 2009-01-26 01:13:07 PM
One of my top favorites was always "Existential Blues". All the songs on the list deserve to be there. It's impossible to make a list of only 10 songs from that show.

maxheck 2009-01-26 01:28:58 PM
kronicfeld, Control_this:

Will you two get out of my head? That was exactly my thinking... Drop "Yoda" and add "Shaving Cream."

/ still has my ticket stub from the good doctor's 25th anniversary tour.

FiveByFive 2009-01-26 01:30:51 PM
What? No "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer"?

Alien Robot 2009-01-26 01:35:37 PM
What about "Stairway to Gilligan's Island"? One of the few song Dr Demento was under a legal injunction not to play. He sometomes would play it anyway.

Subby!? You Made my FARKING day!

I literally cried, cried, hearing "Dead Puppies" after all these years. What a beautiful and twisted song. I had forgotten it existed! omfg, omfg, this is the way to start a day, a bottle of sake, a level 80 paladin, my Horde T-shirt on its way and then "Dead Puppies". I expect wonders today.

/ subby, you are truly blessed, it takes a lot to cheer this depressed old man.

Holy Mother f'n crap. I've been trying to find a certain song i heard in college back in 91. It was a weird song about a robot that had a bit of a woman on a old recording. 1 minute on this damn list, and i got it. "Marvin I Love You" from the Marvin The Paranoid Robot LP..

I completely forgot everything else. Thank you Man.

imagonyx123 2009-01-26 02:32:24 PM

I will always love Dr. Demento for introducing me to "The Thing" by Phil Harris...

So I pulled into a Shell station. They said I'd blown a seal.

I said, "Fix the damn thing and leave my private life out of it, okay, pal?"

Doctor Hooey 2009-01-26 02:55:22 PM
I credit Dr. D. for introducing me to two of my top musical favorites of all time - Frank Zappa and Tom Waits.

No Tom Lehrer songs? Fail. (note my name...)

Interestingly, every one of those songs is on the 20th anniv. collection. :P

Cybernetic 2009-01-26 03:28:49 PM
"The Ballad of Irving" was also on a comedy album called When You're In Love, The Whole World Is Jewish.

I know that nothing is obscure on Fark, but I'll be surprised if anyone else here can say that they own a copy of that album.

Now get off of my...thing...the thing in front of my house. Whatever it is. Get off it.

Necrosis 2009-01-26 03:30:07 PM
Demento went to my alma matter, I don't have any interest in novelty music or his radio show, but he gave some great lectures on music history a couple years ago. Then he showed up at a party that night looking a bit sketchy with all the nubile college girls running around.

Uzzah 2009-01-26 03:31:09 PM
No "$30 Guitar" by Pancreas Joe and the Eskimo Leftists?

Mr. Chainsaw 2009-01-26 03:35:38 PM
"Ooooh, I'm only ten and I already have two mortal enemies!"

Forgot the gross classic "My Dead Dog Rover" (pops)

gonjie 2009-01-26 03:45:31 PM

and "Existential Blues" that was noted earlier.

I laughed harder at this comment than at all of those songs put together.

who the fark is Dr. Demento?

OneFretAway [TotalFark] 2009-01-26 04:07:57 PM
Wow - the article was like a time capsule. Apparently Dr. D's play list hasn't changed much since I last listened in 1980 or so.

fan_of_homer 2009-01-26 04:08:54 PM
Pencil Neck Geek should be on the list
