I support breaking this kid's legs, once a month, for the rest of his life. Don't like a stray cat? Get a cage, catch it, and take it to the pound. Don't shoot it in the head with a f*cking arrow and leave it.

/and "protecting quail"? WTF?

I second this. Also, why the fark was a 12 year old playing with a bow and arrow without any supervision?

Some kids aren't total failures in life, and actually have been trained to use these devices?

/this kid was apparently trained, but just kind of a d-bag... so, yes, why was THIS 12-year-old playing with a bow and arrow without supervision?
//I was a crack shot with a rifle by his age, and had my hunter's safety training/card... not so good with a bow and arrow, though...

Do unto others right?.....RIGHT? Okay, maybe not through the head, but what about the leg or arm?

/He has it coming

It's a cat, for crying out loud. It's not like he shot a baby.

Jeez...let the kid work a few hundred hours at an animal shelter. I really don't think he needs to be arrow'd to be punished.

Now, if there's a second offense.....

If you decide that you are going to kill an animal, make it QUICK and make the pain be as LITTLE as possible.

Killing animals happens. But when you do it, make sure that it is FAST and reduce the time of PAIN to the MINIMUM you asshat.

DRTFA, but I'd think shooting something in the head results in a fairly quick death 9 times out of 10.

Why did they call it a "C.T." scan in the video? They had comedy gold, and blew it...

"Because it was a child there's more of a, oh it's a child out being mischievous, made a mistake. I still think it's important to make an impact on that child. Make sure we don't have anything else going on with the child as well," said Rosenthal.

THIS. Even if he turned himself in, any kid willing to shoot a cat like this may have deeper psychological issues.

Some people raise quail for food/sale. Extrapolate this to a wolf attacking a farmer's cow - it's the same idea. A cat is a predator, just like a wolf is. Now, I have no idea if this family raises quail, but if they do, and they'd been losing quail from predation, the kid's action is completely justifiable.

Now, if they don't raise quail, then the suggestion in the Boobies is on the mark.

The boy and his father told the Gem County Sheriff's Office he was protecting quail, but the question many are asking tonight is - does intention matter?

Yes, intention matters. This is why murder has degrees.

Most of you are getting off as though this is solidly that the child was merely joyfully firing at a stray for the sadistic pleasure of it all. They don't even know if this was done purposefully.

No. I didn't bag the crows that attacked and bloodied up my cat when he went outside either - I shot them. Just cause it's cute and fuzzy doesn't make an animal special.

IF, and I say again IF they raise quail for food/sale, they're justified in protecting their property. You're allowed to kill PEOPLE who threaten your property, so a cat should be a slam-dunk.

And, again, if they don't raise quail...break the little bastard's legs. I'm withholding judgment until I know more about the family circumstances.

Shooting any animal with an ARROW is generally not a good quick way to kill them.

Arrows are methods of simply CUTTING an animal till they bleed to death.

The impact from a bullet is much harder, and the damage more immediate.

I do not condone killing animals, but if you do it, bow an arrow is not a "quick" way to kill something, in my opinion.

therhinodep: I need one of you grammar Nazis to get on this headline. I'm sure it's incorrect, but I'm not up to unscrambling it at the moment.

Should be something to the effect of:

Meet Valentine, the cat who survived a 12 year old boy shooting him in the head with an arrow.

The current headline makes it sound like the arrow was possibly just near the 12 year old boy and happened to spontaneously come to life and reap terrible suffering upon poor kitty.

/happy?
//my revision could possibly be interpreted as the head already having an arrow and the boy shot him in the head with something unspecified, but I tried not to alter the original too much

OregonVet [TotalFark] 2009-01-25 08:29:11 PM
Nothing wrong with dispatching a feral cat in humane fashion. I remember when I was a boy- the local bully tortured a kitten with a rubber suction cupped arrow shot from a toy bow. We couldn't stop him. Then one day his own cat died (who know why) and he came over for a shovel with which to bury it. I refused and he went crying all the way home.

Having said all this and not RTFA, I have to say my bow and arrow can kill most things pretty damn well but I'd pro'lly go for the 22LR on a feral cat.

Alright, nevermind, my first revision was actually better. This sounds like the arrow was fied in the vicinity of the boy but not necessarily from the boy himself.

/This is why my writing projects always fail

Not true. A B&A has a smaller margin for error than a firearm between the animal leaving injured and an animal quickly killed, true, but the goal of the hunter is a single well-placed shot that kills the target within 2-5 steps. This is true for both B&A and firearm hunting - a well-placed arrow will kill just as efficiently on any game short of elk as a bullet.

What's more, if the animal is only wounded by the shot, it's more likely to go on to survive from an arrow wound than a bullet wound, so it could be argued that it's more humane.

My bet is that the kid was trying to kill a feral cat that was attacking livestock (quail) and simply missed the kill-shot. Frankly, a headshot on a cat with an arrow from any significant difference is pretty damn impressive, and I'm not going to begrudge him the 3 millimeters he missed the kill-shot by.

/unless he's out joy-killing a cat. Then...it's on.
//where's the "BOOM, HEADSHOT!" Gif when you need it?

And where, exactly, did it say in the article that the cat was domesticated and not feral? It's not smart to take chances with a stray.
