(Daily Mail) Amusing Maureen Dowd slams New York's newest Senator. Real reason? "Sen. Gillibrand's major crime seems to be that she is 15 years younger and better looking than Miss Dowd." We're going to need a bigger "Oh Snap"   (blogs.dailymail.com) divider line 69

Let's be fair to Maureen Dowd. She slams everyone for reasons that are often difficult to discern and has unexplained personal vendettas against many people.

On the other hand, her columns are entertaining. It all balances out.

I actually read the column. Key points:
- Paterson is not enjoyably dramatic like Blago, is not decisive, and isn't acting as if he merits the job he only got because of Spitzer's resignation, presumably because he is boring: doesn't jog in spandex, lacks ridiculous hair, and doesn't go around quoting poetry after getting himself arrested and impeached. Dowd also sees Many Conspiracy Theories and Humiliations in the non-selection of Caroline Kennedy.
- Caroline Kennedy should have been picked. Since she's pals with Obama, well-connected in the Senate as a Kennedy and a fundraising goldmine, she could probably have snagged more bailout cash for New York. Dowd probably has a point here: Gillibrand will have no influence at all in the Senate.
- Kirsten Gillibrand is pro-gun and anti-bailout and inexperienced in Congress. Her colleagues compare her to Tracy Flick, which Dowd repeats for emphasis and with relish. (Her real crime? Probably being from upstate - that and the guns.)
- The Clintons, comme d'habitude, are behind the whole mess and poison all things, especially Bill. (Yawn)

Here's Gillibrand accepting Patterson's appointment. Who is that to the left of her? Oh, yeah, it's former republican senator Al D'Amato. The guy her father has ties with.

Maybe Dowd is upset because Patterson appointed a republican. There are reports that Peter King (R) is reconsidering his senate bid in 2010 because Gillibrand is further to the right than him on many issues.

Knight without armor 2009-01-25 05:37:29 PM
Kennedy bailed out and obviously couldn't stomach any kind of campaign in 2010 (or anytime).

Gillibrand is smart, has proven she can deliver both Republican and Democrat votes in upstate NY because she represents their interests, and as for the gun thing, maybe someone should read Dowd a copy of DC v. Heller, because an individual's right to keep and bear arms is the law of the land (not saying it's necessarily my view)

i just dn't get what the big deal against her is. Maybe its because i'm from PA and not NY, but I just don't get it.

I mean, is it because of her gun record? All I can say is "so what?"
There's plenty of more important issues than that, at least in my mind. Stop worrying about the ones like this that don't matter, and worry about the issues that do.

Doc Daneeka 2009-01-25 06:20:51 PM
I am enjoying watching the NYC papers throw a hissy fit about this selection. And I consider myself a liberal Democrat.

They act as if her support of gun rights puts her somewhere to the right of Karl Rove. But the reality is, she's pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, has a 93% rating from the ACLU, and is fairly moderate-to-liberal on most issues.

The fact is, she's a mainstream Democrat. She's going to vote with Democrats in the Senate almost all the time. And she may (gasp) actually acknowledge that millions of New Yorkers live north and west of Westchester County and pay some attention to the devastating economic crises that's been destroying upstate for decades. The NYC media is just going to have to deal with it.

Protip: a New York Republican is a moderate Democrat anywhere else in the country. We do not have conservatives here, be they fiscal, social or otherwise.

RemyDuron 2009-01-25 08:01:33 PM
So what conservative things does she support besides guns?

She apparently got good ratings from Gay and Lesbian groups, so that's not it. What's wrong with her?

Actually... no, I don't. It is metaphorically descriptive and accurate, and short and concise. It describes the type of person who uncritically swallows any old crap that various icons of the left - including old battle-axe Dowd - decide to vomit out for consumption by the glazed-eyed masses (Prole-feed).

I assume that your problem with it is that the phrase was invented by some right wing talk show host? (Who? Hannity? Sounds like his style, but I wouldn't know, since I rarely listen to him.) If so, why does that make it wrong or incorrect?

You didn't really ask a question hoping for an answer. If you did, you would have phrased it in an intelligent, grown-up manner, not in the koolaid-fueled wharrgarbl manner you did. It may have had a question mark at the end, but you were clearly making a statement, not seeking an answer.

You're welcome...you, too.

nyclon 2009-01-25 08:40:00 PM
Gillebrand will win in 2010. NYC will vote for the democrat, and this seals upstate republican NY. NY was almost entirely republican above Westchester County until 2006. Paterson knows what he's doing, she knows how to get the Palin-type vote

Doc Daneeka 2009-01-25 08:51:47 PM
nyclon: NY was almost entirely republican above Westchester County until 2006.

A common misperception among downstaters.

Upstate New York has voted for the Democratic candidate in the last five presidential elections in a row (dating back to 1992).

If you look at a map, upstate looks mostly red, but that's because no one lives in a lot of the big, rural counties. Most of the upstate population lives in the cities and metro areas (Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany, Ithaca, etc.) which are solidly blue. The labor unions still wield enormous political power upstate, and they are all Democrats.

Upstate NY leans liberal and blue. Even what elected Republicans there are upstate are so moderate that they would be Democrats anywhere else in the country.

Sigh. "not in the koolaid-fueled wharrgarbl manner you did..."

You are obviously incapable of actual intelligent debate, since you reverted to ad hominem (the first choice of most people who can't argue the actual merits of their position). Go away little boy. Before your Dad finds you using the computer and spanks you.
