This was (embarrassingly) my introduction to these guys. Since then I've grabbed their whole catalog and I have to say "Alive or Just Breathing" is my favorite.

/So, Fark metal heads, let's start this weeks SHMHC and all of the "that's not metal, this sucks" posts!

Recoil Therapy [TotalFark] 2009-01-25 08:04:27 AM
I like Dio's better. I was enjoying this one until the singer/blacksmith started with the deep raspy yelling, I can't stand that type of "singing".

/it's good to be the king
//tasty serving wenches

I like the band's music, but can't get past the wussy emo singing.

Dio is better.

I like Killswitch Engage. A friend of mine gave me a couple of their albums and they're pretty good.

They are Metal if you consider metalcore to be Metal. I think that metalcore is Metal. I also think that there are some decent metalcore bands out there. I do not think that Killswitch Engage is one of these decent bands, and the cover of this song is a slap in the face to the man who invented the devil horns.

/the best of all metal worlds? What does that even mean?

I do recognize the "screaming" as just another vocal expression. What do you call it when someone uses their fake high voice? As a guy, if you want to sing outside traditional vocal ranges, you either sing like a pussy (Jason Mraz), or you scream your head off (Howard Jones). I don't care for bands like The Bled, where 90% of the song is screaming, and the instrumental is the furthest thing from harmony one can expect. But KsE mixes it up a bit, and they're solid on metal harmony. I suggest Five Finger Death Punch for you old metalheads still on the fence about "screaming".
Ronnie James Dio...no one will ever sound like him. It's like watching your local band try to sing Chris Cornell.

Exactly. Howard Jones can actually sing and carry a tune. He's a hell of a lot better than most "metal" vocalists out there today (I'm looking at you, Randy Blythe).

BigSnatch: /the best of all metal worlds? What does that even mean?

"Best of metal worlds" is the answer to "if you consider metalcore as metal." Of course I do. It's go Metal in its name for God sake. All of these bands are metal. Slipknot, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Lamb of God, Pantera etc. Elvis is the king of RnR. van Halen is a RnR band. See my point? Different styles, influences, directions but all branches off the same tree my man.

Oh, and of course the Dio version is better but this isn't satire. It shows a genuine appreciation for the original even if the video is tongue-in-cheek. It's clear that with this cover, KSE counts Dio among their influences.

Heh, I just went and watched the original Dio video on youtube and now realize that this Killswitch video borrowed heavily from it. Kinda neat.

All I know about Killswitch Engage is that their song with the lyric "I have become a tyrant" made for a really really good track for a collection of car vids and crashes and stuff I got back in the day from some site...the file title is "Full Throttle" and it worked superb.

/So did "We Built This City" for a stunt biker vid, strangely enough

Huh. I thought Killswitch Engage was a pussy emo rock band, but the comments here seems to imply otherwise, and that was pretty good until the annoying screaming.

Get used to it. It isn't changing any time soon. Go back to listening to crappy ICP.

As far as Killswitch goes, I enjoyed their initial EP and even AOJB, but after that they went a bit too melodiy/emo for me.

Melody is for queers, rhythm and harmony are for real men ;)

No, you were right. They are a pussy emo band but they do a good job of dressing it up and selling it to suburban kids as "metal".

browntimmy 2009-01-25 11:45:04 AM
I don't care what kind of music you like, there is no way you can say that that singing was in any way "good." What can you even say about the vocals that is positive? I want to see someone try. It's impossible, not even a matter of opinion, it does nothing but distract from the music.

craigdamage 2009-01-25 11:49:34 AM
Way too "Guitar Center" sounding for me.

I really dislike the sounds and tones of much current modern metal-hard rock. Sounds thin and transparent.

I prefer heavy guitar and bass that ooze out of the speakers like warm magma. Drums should thunder like Bonham and vocals should be INSIDE the mix with the riffage and NOT on top of the mix.

...just my .02
take it or leave it.

this kicked ass---the video is epic. Finally a metal band that isn't all "dark and serious".

yeah the screamo singing---

And Dio very much rules.

Any band with a drummer that has a gigantic red beard gets my vote.

Excellent song, moderately amusing video.

Crappy band, crappy cover version.

Hard to dance to, so I give it a 56, Dick.

I didn't know if you could tell, but thats what we here call..a joke. I certainly respect Dio and Holy Diver is catchy as hell, there is no denying that. But Killswitch Engage certainly isn't the best metal representative out there. CURRENT melody is awful, thats why there is a surge of mostly atonal rhythmic puzzles. Its much easier for musicians to sit down and count some off beats than to come up with melodies of gold.

As farking strange as it was, I enjoyed a lot of that track. I just with they would take the irony out of their music and do a full on serious album. But, at least they have fun with it!

That girl has a hell of a voice too.

There are many bands that aren't dark and serious. Hell, most bands (excluding die hard black metal bands) are aware that the themes they might be using in their music are comical. Let's look at a band like Gorerotted (now The Rotted). They have gems like.

- Stab me till I cum
- Bed'em , behead'em
- Only tools and corpses
- Zombie graveyard rape bonanza

I personally dislike Killswitch Engage A LOT. I hate the vocals, I hate the whole "modern" sound they have etc etc. However, I have a lot of respect for their guitarist (adam, I think). I've seen pictures of the dude wearing some weird shiat and just having a blast onstage, THAT I can admire and appreciate in a metal musician. Their music, however, does absolutely nothing for me.

Other bands I dislike:
- Pretty much every band that has a noun-phrase for a name. (Stop it, you're not clever nor original)

debauch 2009-01-25 12:43:58 PM
i thoroughly enjoyed this. and the guitar player as princess, i lol'd.

Though I can really appreciate the humor of the band name and the attempt at humor in the video. All the breakdowns and the awful attempts at brutal vocals are reasons why I weep for the future of metal.

This coming from a guy who listens to "Prostitute Disfigurement".

But, oh well, different strokes for different folks I guess.

I thought this at first, but strip away the irony and there is potential. There is a section in the late 1 minute mark where the girl first sings cleanly that is a very well developed section of music. The over the top breakdowns is just humorous and mocking of harcore/metalcore of years past. It'll end up being a novelty, which is why I would like to see them be a little more serious with their writing. They have the right elements to do more than what they did there.

KSE is a good band. I've seen them a few times in the NY/NJ tri-state area. They put on a very good live show. However, they are a band that started off really strong and have not really progressed. Their last album is pretty boring actually. Still consider myself a fan.

This is a decent cover of a classic song. I'm surprised to see positive comments at all, as metal heads are usually too cool to enjoy anything more than 5 people have heard of.
