Well, all of the inbreeding to keep the lines "pure" is going to have that effect. I hear dalmations, particularly, are abysmally retarded these days.

Which is why it is probably better to get a newer breed of dog if you MUST have a pure bred.

/mutt from the pound has always been good enough for me.

I know. I just wanted to bring up the dalmation thing and see if anyone has first-hand knowledge of this. I've only heard through hearsay.

I've only known two Dalmation owners; one of the dogs was deaf, and the other was so farking stupid it was truly amazing that it lived to be as old as it did.

"A Swedish research scientist has discovered that the current generation of pedigree dogs, normally social and curious creatures by nature, are disinterested, shy and less responsive to commands than their ancestors"

Depends on the type of dog you're buying and who's doing the breeding. My guy Bosun who is just 4 months old is very smart, takes to commands very well and has shown that he is a natural born hunter. He comes from a champion line of hunting dogs who also win champion titles at dog shows. But since they are bred for hunting and not just looks, the dogs from his breeders are smart and love to hunt. Also, they work closely with other breeders and the dog that sired him was from a breeder that specifically breeds show quality bird dogs for hunting.

Do you use it as bait to trap a smarter pet?

The study found show-quality and "handbag" pooches were the most likely to lack the instincts of previous generations, which were bred for their strength, hunting and working abilities, rather than their looks.

Are we talking about dogs, or Miss Teen SC '07?

the chihuahua was originally used as FOOD. and the documentary "Show dogs exposed" is great at pointing out the self perpetuating ignorance of show dog breeders.

It makes sense, but it's probably not across the board yet, it just happens with the super-popular pure breeds. As breeders try to keep up with demand, some inbreeding occurs. I believe that's what happened to Dalmatians and more recently, to Beagles.

That said, my purebred Pembroke Corgi is pretty dang smart.

Also stubborn and out of her mind crazy, though.

Never a dull moment when you own a dog...

Once rescued a purebred bearded collie from the animal shelter. Lovely dog, but was she ever high strung and unhealthy. We missed her terribly when she died, and thought to go to a breeder for another. The price for a puppy was prohibitive, and in the end, we decided, why are we paying hundreds and hundreds of dollars for a dog when there are hundreds and hundreds of them waiting at the pound for adoption? We went and ended up picking out a homely, skinny little puppy that was a few hours from euthanization. She's 13 now, a nondescript mongrel and I'm quite sure the greatest dog that ever lived. :) This is nothing against people who like to have a purebred -- there are a lot of places to pick up wonderful dogs -- but I can't imagine not rescuing one myself.

Is this where the consumption of rats comes from? Did someone mistake a rat for a chihuahua once and fry him up?

Oldiron_79: My Border collie was smarter than any of your shelter mutts.

No denying that. My father in law used to have a pack of four. The alpha, Heather, would take time off from doing calculus to play catch the ball with the other three. She actually seemed bored with her role in that activity occasionally, but did her job faithfully and without hesitation. That breed of dog wants to work, and be smart.

Kyro [TotalFark] 2009-01-25 11:47:45 AM
If you want a smart dog, get a mutt.

Actually, if you want any dog, get a mutt. And stay the fark away from stores that sell dogs. Opt for the places that host adoptions from foster homes. The dogs are always up to date on shots, usually microchipped and never go towards making money for puppy mills.

I have absolutely nothing against shelter dogs, and I applaud those who adopt them. I went with a purebred because I wanted to know exactly (well, close to exactly) what I could expect as the dog grew up. Of course, I went from this:

The way to combat this crisis is to only allow dogs of disparate breeds to ,well, breed. Then all the retard might cancel itself out. You know, a St Bernard crossed with a Pomeranian, that sort of thing. Should also lead to some greatly entertaining husbandry.

Sage advice. Also, if your state permits dog-racing, check to see which tracks adopt out greyhounds. Marvelous dogs and you'd really be doing one a favor.

Yes, he's a Vizsla. :)
Thanks for your adminiration.

Seems there is a lot of purebred hate in this thread by people who are clearly ignorant of what they are talking about.

A shelter pup is good for a general purpose companion dog. But if you want a dog for hunting or sporting, it's better to go with a purebred. You have to do your homework, there's a lot of bad breeders out there who are generally clueless and don't do good pairings and who help perpetuate the bad reputation of purebred dogs.

I've stayed in touch with my breeder and she has made a point to check up on his progress.
To her, the dogs she produces are more than just a paycheck, she wants to make sure each one gets paired with a good home and that they are well taken care of. And I have to say that she does her job well. Bosun has been a perfect fit for me and she selected him for me based on our conversations.
