Hmmm... Mens Health isn't trying to sell more magazines, are they?

I can't believe how many greenlights that tired 'your dog wants' cliche is still getting.

BULL. SHIAT.

I live in New York and I have eyes. My sister lives in St Louis, and I spent 14 years in Missouri and had eyes then, too. New York is a pretty fit city. Maybe not in the top twenty, but St Louis is in the wrong list.

BuckTurgidson 2009-01-24 09:05:41 PM
I'm shocked - SHOCKED - that Texas and Oklahoma dominate the "Fattest" list.

Now if you'll excuse me, 26 minutes etc.

mr_crash_davis 2009-01-24 09:38:55 PM
There is no way - no way Salt Lake City is the #1 fittest city, unless all the fat chicks I see every day actually live in Provo.

Come to think of it, that's a pretty good theory.

Av8rLuvr [TotalFark] 2009-01-24 09:47:56 PM
Blah...they're basing their survey on what cities have the "most" parks, gyms, etc. vs cities that don't. Not how many physically fit people vs. un-fit people live there.

So I guess if your inclined to be physically active these cities would accommodate you more so than the others.

Stupid survey.

Cinletharwi 2009-01-24 10:07:12 PM
eyehate: I can't believe how many greenlights that tired 'your dog wants' cliche is still getting.

At least it's not a blahblahblah. Penis, or blahblahblah. The Aristocrats cliche.

We all have cliches we'd love to see cement-shoed and tossed into the Hudson.

19. Sacramento, CA

That is because they sent all the fat-asses up here to Redding, CA.

Hell, even three of these beasts here in Redding throw the entire ratio off.

/Yes, stupid survey.
//Fattie thread!

I'm almost certain that Chicago would be in the top 5 of "the most alcoholic cities.

40oz_A_Knight 2009-01-24 11:01:22 PM
If you don't count the wealthiest parts of northwest DC moves to the other list. Highest concentration of fat people in mobility scooters I've ever seen.

WGC_CPhT 2009-01-24 11:03:18 PM
I'm surprised there aren't more cities in the deep south on the fat list. I live in Huntsville and am astonished at the amount of fat people here. Even in the gym I go to, it's full of fatties!

/not fat
//"Cause he's FAT!?"
///obligatory Mike Gundy reference

Sherjo311 2009-01-24 11:03:56 PM
jacksonville the 8th fattest city in the us? it's more likely than i thought...

/there's a freaking 3-ring circus of fast food joints every block here around the southside

nuclear_asshat 2009-01-24 11:04:01 PM
The criteria is bullshiat. They measure things like health clubs and parks per 1,000 and crap like that.

But if you live in a small town (OK,TX) chances are there isn't a gym to be found, but a local high school with a track and gym that is used by the public.

Fittest city I ever lived in was a small town with a private college. A nice health clinic with doctors you could see in 15 minutes, a college campus with an open gym and tracks you could run on 24/7 and intramural leagues open to faculty staff and some community members.

Sure there were fatties, but there was no fast food and people were very active, and very little smoking. I am sure by the criteria of the magazine, it would rank low, but in actuality it would rank very high.

thereadlines [TotalFark] 2009-01-24 11:04:07 PM
Surprised nothing in LA made the list.

Milwaukee on the top fittest list?

Verrai 2009-01-24 11:05:01 PM
The list is blatantly wrong on many counts, but whatever.

Generally speaking, the "fittest" list should be dominated by the Northeast, Mountains and West: Salt Lake City, Denver, San Francisco, New York, Boston, Phoenix, Seattle, etc. The fattest list should be dominated by the poorer cities of the Midwest and South: Cleveland, Detroit, St. Louis, Memphis, New Orleans, Houston, etc.

But they are clearly just being arbitrary. Which is fine for a piece of crap magazine, I guess.

Seattle and Omaha right next to eachother?

Lies. Unless you count cornfields as "parks", there is no way that Omaha has as much athletic stuff to do as Seattle. I should know, I've had the fortune to call both home.

Argh_Dammit [recently expired TotalFark] 2009-01-24 11:25:29 PM
This list can't be right. I know fat people in Colorado.

They must have played darts to get the city names for each category.

HoboSong [TotalFark] 2009-01-24 11:26:16 PM
Wow. They could've done a more accurate list by visiting each city and judging the first person they saw. I cannot believe how many people made money in that transaction. Im not sure who founded "Mens health" or "Yahoo" but I would like to kick either of them in the nuts.

#9 is Omaha. That's as Midwest as you get. Really, it's as middle of anything as you get.

As many people know, these 'fit or fat' lists only compare quantity of restaurants vs. gyms.

I would be very interested to see where YOUR numbers came from, if it was anywhere but the 'out of my ass' bureau. I do not think that, by definition, any of those cities/districts/regions you mentioned deserve to be either fat or fit.

Killer Cars [TotalFark] 2009-01-24 11:29:25 PM
Argh_Dammit: This list can't be right. I know fat people in Colorado.

Yeah, but fat people in Colorado are more of the outdoor loving, cleaner air breathing variety; a fit fat, if you will.

People in other areas are fat fat.

I think clearly more data is needed. Having spent some time in Miami, I remember the females in that city to be much thinner than this article would suggest. Can someone dig up evidence to support or refute this?

futalfufu 2009-01-24 11:30:39 PM

There are actually a ton of cyclist and running groups here in the burgh, check out meetup.com for activities of any kind in your hood.

been living in st louis for 20 years now, haven't really gone anywhere else- but I know that the st. louis area is HUGE- really, you have to drive to get anywhere becasue theres a lot of ground to cover- and there are a LOT of fat people- but I'm not one of them, and thats all that matters to me.

You will find that a lot of our attractions, places to go, activities to partake in, tend to, at the very least, require some physical output. six flags, large malls, the delmar Loop, maybe thats why it got on the not so fat list.

My point was that so many people in this thread are saying it's totally wrong based on the "Because I Said So" methodology. I am sure Mens Health took zero steps to come up with the cities they picked.

Not saying it IS 100% correct, but "It can't be right" isn't very precise either.
