All they would have learned from watching House is that it wasn't lupus.

There is nothing rare about chiari malformation. The article is horse manure.

Well to be fair, the girl on House that couldn't sleep had the plague and was suffering liver failure after a few days.

Well, there's your problem right there, bud.

Three years to figure out what should have been diagnosed with one CT or MRI?

It is exactly like a damn episode of House.

GBmanNC 2009-01-24 10:22:57 PM
Just reading the headline, chiari malformation was at the top of my list. WTF is wrong with Doctors? They need to start teaching logic in med school (or require it for pre med). It seems the prevailing thought process is if something is rare it can't be the problem, as it is rare. However, this leads to under diagnoses and further enforces the belief that the problem is too rare to have.

A stats course would tell you that most people who watch House aren't highly intelligent. It won't tell you if most highly intelligent people watch House.

/Most of the people I know who watch House are actually pretty bright. I think because of the humor.

Arnold-Chiari Malformation is fairly common... and fairly easy to diagnose with an MRI. Surprised this was much of an issue.

By the way House is a great show.

The Arnold-Chiari malformation is not that rare, all things considered. I'm surprised they didn't catch this earlier.

Holy shiat. I had exactly this. I was diagnosed because I had a visible scoliosis. It took two doctor visits to diagnose this: One visit to the normal doctor to see why my spine was curved, who sent me to a specialist (I just happen to live < 10 miles from the University of Iowa Hospitals) who immediately did and MRI and in 2003 they took pictures that ended up in a medical textbook.

Actually, some Chiaris can only be seen if a seated MRI is done. That's how my wife was diagnosed. She had all the symptoms but no herniated tonsils. We went to the Chiari Institute over by LIJ and the doc there suggested a seated MRI. Bingo!

Darkraven 2009-01-24 10:49:23 PM
When I was an infant/toddler (1 year-3 years old), I slept on average two hours a day. I threw my mother into early menopause, because when I was not sleeping I was usually crying my heart out. I feel really bad about it now. It got a little bit better as time went on, but at the age of eight my "bedtime" was 11:30. All my friends were jealous.

(As far as I know, I didn't have brain problems. Just one of those kids that didn't need a ton of sleep.)

It took them three farking years to figure this out while the kid suffered horribly. As others have said it is rather easy to see on an MRI and isn't really that rare.
I get the impression that something like 1 out of 10 doctors has any clue or motivation to actually help people.

/ Five years and three misdiagnoses, of course they all still expect to be paid in full. Doctors should be paid for performance.

Malbar: MorrisBird: There is nothing rare about chiari malformation. The article is horse manure.

Chiari Malformation is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This means that Chiari Malformation, or a subtype of Chiari Malformation, affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.

You are horse manure.

Though that may be the "official" stance on Chiari, doctors that deal with this every day are finding it is much more common. It's just that there are a shiat load of lazy ass doctors out there that either a.) don't believe their patients and think they're crazy or drug addicts. Or b.)Don't believe chiari actually exists dispite the evidence.

as a med student, I can assure you all that we hear about arnold- chiari early and often. It can be severe and obvious, or it can be barely threshold for the syndrome. Treatment means a large surgery involving reconstructing the posterior fossae of the cranium sometimes there is accompanying spine work. This is not something you want to do to a patient before you are absolutely sure what is going on.

unlike on House, there is no exploratory brain surgery.

I can assure you that his doctors did not enjoy telling his mom repeatedly that they had no idea what was going on. I can also assure you they were shiating themselves until the diagnosis was clenched, after cutting skin.
