The gap between rich and poor students at Cambridge University was revealed for the first time yesterday.

No one knew this two days ago? I am sure the students have always been aware of who has money and who does not

Seth'n'Spectrum 2009-01-24 07:13:57 PM
I can't imagine living off 3 pounds a day, I could probably do 5 or so. 400 a week is inconceivable though.

/wait, is that including rent?
//currently doing around 6 a day, but suck it, I'm in London.

Poor students are poorer than rich students?

I think I need to see the research to wrap my mind around this one.

It's okay!!! The new US Administration has created a plan to help these impoverished Cambridge students. Americans who make over 200K per year will be getting the bill in 2010.

Is that like the Ministry of No Shiat? or the Department of Obvious Affairs?

These students are getting the shaft. A Cambridge education is not worth three pounds a day.

I hate poor kids. They smell and usually have 'issues', what with the beatings and molesting and all that.

Why dont they just stop being poor?

I was slightly less broke than this in college (but was still pretty damn broke) and was just happy to be going to college. I was also working. I hate to point out the obvious, but 10hrs/wk of part time work would probably triple their spending money.

If you can't afford it, you have no business going to school.

There really is no place for the middle class in higher education in the U.S. The way financial aid works, they are pushed out.

Schools what people with either a lot of money or no money.

If your parents write one big check, schools are happy. They also like the very poor.

If you are a very poor student, the school knows that they qualify for far more financial aid. They get massive loans and all the work study programs.

Poor athletes are even better. School gives a poor kids with bad grades a couple grand to play football. In return, that kid might bring in 10-20K in grants and loans. That's why your middle class kid with a 3.0 is less recruited then a 2.0 dumbass athlete.

The day your kid is born, get a 529 plan started. Instead of wasting all that money on presents, ask the families to contribute to the plan.

As for the parents who say "my kid is smart, they'll get scholarships" it's already far too late. Grade inflation is so bad now, that across the board academic scholarships are more and more rare and worth less and less.

It seems to me that even though it might be obvious that a gap exists, it is nevertheless worth something to know exactly how big that gap is.

Also, it was just a survey conducted by the student newspaper. Not a scientific study, as the headline would have you believe.

The poor! Have you met them? Charming folk! Course, they don't have two pennies to rub together, but then again, that's why they're poor!

So, these researchers? What kind of students where they again?

UseTheForksLuke,

Mean life satisfaction vs the GDP per capita in 2003 on 2000 based PPP dollars, referencing some sort of non-sequential age index?

That is the most wonderful and confusing piece of research I have seen. I am assuming you have to read the entire 10 or 15 pages to really understand it?

/And since the article seems to be talking about pocket money. You are gong to college and have something passes for food and shelter, suck it up, this is your opportunity middle/lower class.

cryinoutloud [TotalFark] 2009-01-24 08:12:12 PM
It's easier to get through hard times with money than it is to get through easy times with no money...no wait, it's easier to go through money during hard times than it is to go through money during easy times. Well, whatever.

It sucks being poor.

thisispete [TotalFark] 2009-01-24 08:15:52 PM
Maybe they should write letters to their bank managers:

Darling Fascist Bully-Boy

Give me some more money, you bastard.

May the seed of your loins be fruitful in the belly of your woman.

desidog 2009-01-24 08:17:39 PM
They won't publish my comment....bummer.

All i had to say was that if they were smarter, they wouldn't dumpster dive....cause they could get sick that way...if they were smart they'd sell some oregano to those rich kids.

res ipsa dixit 2009-01-24 08:30:21 PM
That's outrageous! £2.87 for a pint of beer!

Why can't they buy a six-pack at the grocery store?

In the USA, you want to be either really rich or really poor.

The middle class gets to pay for both.

What was the purpose of this article? It's maybe 500 words and says that some university students are poor.

This is below even twitter standards, much less a publication.
