Canterbury, Conn. - A Canterbury teen-ager has been arrested and state police are seeking a second teen in connection with Friday's holdup at the Canterbury branch of the Savings Institute bank at 180 Westminster Road.

The 17-year-old youth was taken into custody by state police detectives in Putnam at 9:46 p.m. Friday and subsequently charged with bank robbery and third-degree larceny.

Sgt. John Szamocki, supervisor of the Eastern District Major Crime unit at Troop D said Saturday morning detectives are preparing an arrest warrant for a second teen-ager in connection with the 10:45 a.m. holdup.

The arrested teen-ager's identity was not made public because he is considered a youthful offender.

Police said the two robbers entered the bank at about 10:45 a.m. Friday, one armed with a handgun and the other wielding a crowbar, which he banged repeatedly on the counter in front of a teller's station as he pursued his demands for money.

Police said the two youths fled the bank on foot, heading east on Westminster Road (Route 14) and crossed the road into a wooded area.

A state police K-9 team was able to lead troopers on a track, following the footprints to snowmobile tracks in a field close to the woods.

Police followed the snowmobile tracks to a house at 193 Westminster Road, where two snowmobiles were found behind the house. The engine on one of the snowmobiles was still warm, police said.

Troopers surrounded the house, using a bullhorn to order anyone inside to come out the front door with their hands up, but received no response.

After about an hour, police entered the house through the rear and determined it was vacant.
Police said they recovered evidence and stolen property once the youth was arrested.

No one was injured during the robbery.

Teenagers: Dumb.
Criminals: Dumb.
Teenage criminals: Dumb to the nth.

Because only teenage criminals would a) rob a bank by conspicuously banging on a counter with a crowbar, b) flee on foot through snow-covered woods to c) snowmobiles and drive away through more snow-covered woods. Probably the cops caught either or both of them at home, texting to their buds about the amazing crime spree they just pulled off. Or else posting their exploits to their Facebook page.

I always wonder if/how often that happens.
