I went up as a child, before the renovation of the mid 80s, and the view wasn't that impressive.

I have to admit, after climbing the base, I was not sad that we couldn't continue our trek up when I took my son there last summer. If it ever reopens, the only way one of our children will go to the crown will be on a class trip.

Let's hope this is the start of a broad anti-paranoia trend.

I went up as a teen. It's very small. Those windows are like a foot and a half high. The whole room in the crow fits what, 5 people?

A long time ago, I was very surprised to learn that the statues mouth only measures three feet across.

The question is freeing up the crown and having the ability to send the message that this symbol of freedom cannot be shackled by those who wish us ill.

There's still hope for this country.

i went up to the crown in 6th grade. i guess this is symbolic, because the actual experience of being in the crown is awful. you walk up a zillion flights of rickety stairs so you can crowd in with a bunch of other people and stare through these 4 inch think blue salt-crusted windows. I think I barely saw the horizon.

now the torch-- that would be awesome.

Ain't gonna happen, and not because of terrorism.

A combination of fire safety codes and Americans With Disabilities Act will crush this movement. It's the inevitable wheels of government polishing away the last remnants of common sense.

Just getting to the pedestal of the statue you have to go thru 2 security screenings. To get on the ferry to Liberty Island you have to take off your belt, go thru metal detectors, have your bags searched, etc.

Then to get from the base of the statue to the pedestal you have to go thru security AGAIN, including standing in an explosives detecting machine which shoots high pressured air at you. It is quite amusing to watch women going thru in short dresses or skirts through, since it blew up their dresses or skirts every time.

If they ever open the crown again get ready for strip searches. They are almost at that level now.

It should remain closed. If an islamist managed to do damage to the head portion, it would be very demoralizing, especially to our men in uniform.

Not gonna happen. The assault on the WTC proved that the terrorists are thinking of doing massive FINANCIAL damage along with the symbolism and demoralization. They're more likely to attack Wall Street for maximum damage to the entire country.

If we modify our lives out of fear of terrorist attack, then we're already demoralized. I say open the crown back up! The statue is a symbol of freedom and we're restricting access to the experience for our own people & for visitors from all over. What's that say about the state of this country?

Oh, and boo-hoo for "our men in uniform" they're grown-ups and they can handle "demoralizing attacks". Matter of fact, that's the job they get paid for. That and actually preventing terrorist attacks in the first place.

More than seven years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Statue of Liberty's crown and the circular stairway leading up to it remain closed to the public due to safety concerns.

I wasn't aware that we closed it due to security.

What a shamefully cowardly thing to do. Who ever made that decision, and whoever approved it, surrendered to terrorism that day.

\They did not surrender to the terrorists. There is no entity called terrorist.

If you have ever had the chance to be in the Statue, also to be in the crown, then you know that there is NO WAY POSSIBLE to get ANYTHING either up that staircase, or into the crown itself that can do any damage whatsoever. Also, on the infintesimal chance that you were able to, we would be able to go all Richard Reid on your ass before you could do anything.

Open the Crown again. It is past time too.

As for the torch, having been up there when I was young, it was great, but it is not feasible with as long as it has been closed.

As for the ADA aspect of it, go roll into a corner and cry. We have been too PC for too long.

Seriously this, nobody wants the men in uniform with more firepower at their finger tips than the Caliphate ever saw pissed off when its open season on symbolism, Mecca anyone?

i've been up plenty of castle and cathedral stairs in Europe and those with solid stone spiral staircases are outright scary. The worst was bumper to bumper walkers in Prague and all I could think about going up and down is the domino effect that could happen if someone were to trip.

THIS!!

I'm glad I had the opportunity to go up to the crown back in 1990. And I hope they reopen it.

That said, I'd never go up again. Climbing up that damn spiral staircase with thin, rickety railing was the scariest thing I've ever done. Just the thought that if that obese woman ahead of me slips on just one step, we're all dead was enough for me to crap my shorts all the way up.

It was like that when I went in 2004 or 05, it was absurd. Are they afraid somebody will hijack the statue and fly it into a building? Might as well just take out all those people backed up at the security checkpoint.

I remember that being a secret level in the Genesis version of Spider-Man - Venom: Maximum Carnage.

/When Carnage is torturing Venom hit B and C as fast as possible.
//Probably the hardest level in the game aside from the fight with Carnage (cheapest boss in any game ever).
///Not on SNES version - that was a port of the Genesis.

Went there 2007 with family and some family including mother in law who almost had an heart attack waiting in line in 95F heat of course without water, which was forbidden. I wonder where all the explosives could have been hidden when everybody was wearing t-shirts and shorts. It was nice inside though compared to the eighties when the place was packed.

View from the crown is hardly worth climbing to. Did it in the eighties. A guard on top of the platform told us that he has never been allowed to climb up, which we both agreed was wrong. Reason for the restrictions was that, when they did the restoration work they had to have the building reproved for fire safety and good old rules that worked way back had been changed and now the rickety old stairs didn't pass anymore.

Probably, all it took 20 years ago was an NES advantage controller. Of course technology has improved and with todays' wireless gaming controllers a terrorist could probably hijack it without even going inside.

Who would have thought, a TERRORIST wants to reopen the crown, presumably to launch TERROR attacks at unsuspecting New Yorkers.
