...so it will be just like their most recent album then?

Though, admittedly, Eno working with Coldplay did pique my interest in them somewhat.

ChewbaccaJones [TotalFark] 2009-01-24 02:18:26 AM
That should prove to be a pretty good album. Just think: a collaboration between Brian Eno and Joe Satriani filtered through a shiatty top 40 band's colon. What's not to like?

paulseta [TotalFark] 2009-01-24 02:22:28 AM
I like to play "spot the stolen parts" with each album... though frankly I lose count after the first dozen or so ripoffs.

/only half joking

i really liked "viva la vida". perhaps halfly because of Eno's work on it [i'm a big fan], influencing the band, new experiments, etc. Nancy, tease just the tip for now. And the song writing is pretty good too. way up there from the mostly drab "X and Y". Sure there were a few good songs on it such as "Square One", "Talk", "Speed of Sound" and "the Hardest Part". Don't just watch it dangle, Betty, smack it with the paddle. But for the most part it was mostly boring drabby ballads with sappy lyrics. Some people say "ohh they ripped off Kraftwerk" for that "Talk" song. But they didn't. they just "sampled" its main riff. it's right in the credits: giving credit to the guys in Kraftwerk who wrote it. Nancy, how many times do i have to tell you, the point is to make it hard, not soft. you're doing it all wrong. the only song i don't like on "viva..." is "cemetaries of london" it's too short and kind of pointless. doesn't go anywhere. I love the second half of the album, tho, i find there's stronger material in there. which is funny because it seems like most newer popular albums run out of steam toward the end, have all the hits at the beginning. Pinch it just a little bit, Kelly, that's it, until it's good and red. I love "strawberry Hill" it's so catchy. i find the coda after "death and all of his friends" is kind of anti climactic. sure it makes the album a loop, because it's the same music as the beginning song too, but it just changes the atmosphere of the whole song. but then again, i would probably be disappointed some how if "death and all of his friends" just ended as it does on the album, then the cd finishes.

What a step down for Brian Eno.

Then again, he could make a fart sound good, so he might be able to help Coldplay.

Um, so I suppose you're so out of the loop you didn't realise he's already been working with them a few years now?

Or that U2 were in pretty much the same situation when he helped them in the 80s?

And that U2 did their best work with Eno/Lanois in the fold?

U2 > Coldplay > Rush > Nickelback?

Did I leave anyone out?

I present this as an example of U2's suckitude.

Actually this is a U2 and a Coldplay thread. If only we could find a way to wrap Radiohead into this as well so Valdes could start some flame wars as well. Oh, and maybe we could get some Pitchfork reviewers to join in, so I can offend people by saying they're awful.

Yeah, that about sums up the daily music discussion on Fark.

Kanye West, mostly among white people

Beyonce and Mariah Carey among gay people.

My favourite band amongst people who don't have the slightest idea what good music is.

So... now that Coldplay have used Eno to make an album that has the imagery of War, but lacking any coherent theme, and the 'experimentalizaion' of Unforgettable Fire, without a 'Pride', they're going to return to Eno to attempt what? A Joshua Tree without the soul? An Achtung without the bite and angst?

I love how this album is on virtually every "Best of 2008" list, yet (1) you don't hear any of the songs on teh radio, and (2) to to any music resale store, and that motherfarker is ALL OVER the shelves. Some great album. So great everyone that bought it heard it once, and said, "mlehhhhh...." and sold it back for $3 in cash or $5 store credit.

And their idiotic farking "Les Miserables" fashion getup for this tour is just flat out stupid. You can tell in teh press pics the only cat that likes it is the main guy, and the other three are making that "yeah, I know I look like a tool, it wasn't my idea, but hey, paycheck, baby. Man's game. I gotta eat too, and I got bills as well."

Say what you will about Zooropa onward, but Achtung Baby wasn't good? Really?

both bands are so overproduced already it's off-putting.

never bought a U2 album after WAR until ACHTUNG BABY came along
with a relatively lively sound.

never bought a Coldplay album.

Coldplay- Decent band and can write some good songs. Talented?? Well, Rex Grossman is kinda "talented". Enough to get into the NFL.

U2- Seemed to peak at "Achtung Baby" but still try to reinvent themselves. Awesome band live. Talented?? Well, IMHO they are.

/Can still listen to Achtung from start to finish and it still sounds fresh.

It's pretty hard to look for music nowadays though. You have to be committed to turning over a lot of rocks. I don't see any one single source nailing it every time (although I've strongly expressed my opinion on the matter which irritated some people.)

I can understand when people just resort to turning on the radio. I just wish there was a venue that dug deeper than NPR in that regard. I'm not even sure what college radio is up to nowadays.

It's as though the Fark music tab is only populated by a pack of hipster wolves who toss up the same easy targets for their own derisive and masturbatory culture rallies. For a group soooo far above the philistines who listen to Coldplay, you sure go after the low hanging fruit.

Coming from someone who had to buy quite a few CDs based on name recognition alone, I call bullshiat. If you can't find good new/obscure-ish acts on the internet, you're just not trying. and it takes a minimal amount of effort to do so, so I have no pity for those who can't.

And it especially bothers me that Coldplay is just an extremely watered-down version of what Slowdive and Radiohead were doing in the early 90s, yet both acts, at least stateside, got ignored and now the mainstream snobs will turn their nose up at them because those acts are liked by those that think the mainstream has absolutely nothing to offer.

I've been in the same boat and bought music more than a few times because of the album art, a label name, or a distributor looked interesting or familiar. So you're more than preaching to the choir at that point.

Looking at year end review lists has pretty much confirmed my feeling that none of these so called "alternative" sources of music reviews are even bothering to explore beyond a few genres.

I still feel that there's a level of effort required to really get into music that people are unable to commit to.
