How about the difference from 2005 to 2009 in self indulgent outrage from the media regarding spending that much money on an inauguration during a time of war and economic crisis?

bulldg4life [TotalFark] 2009-01-23 05:15:21 PM
So? I don't mean to be a jerk or anything, but so what? This was important last week. It gave people a good solid 10 days of complaining. They used it to their heart's content and then they dropped it. And, even if you ask the very people that brought it up last week or the week before, their response would be something like "it's a drop in the bucket for what he's going to end up spending" or "whatever. it was a stupid party that he should've completely canceled because the economy is in trouble".

They used the talking point up and have moved on to "obama isn't really President" or "Obama avoided the Politico's questions because he doesn't really like transparency" or "he avoided the medal of honor ball" or some other equally ridiculous claim.

There will be 40-60 comments in this thread and all of the people that spent 400 comments biatching about this last week will, miraculously, all be traveling or something so they miss this thread.

I don't have a problem with the amount of money spent; however, I do have a problem with spending that much money and still serving Korbel at the Inaugural Luncheon. NEVER go cheap on champagne. I'm glad they went with an American producer, but what about Iron Horse or Schramsberg? Much better juice, IMHO. At least they had the decency to serve Duckhorn and Goldeneye for the first two courses.

And this story will live on anyway, much like the "Clinton trashed the White House before Bush came in" bullshiat still gets repeated.

This.

Hiring John Edward to talk to all those Medal of Honor recipients from the last 8 years would have been mighty expensive.

So what the report says is that if you ignore the biggest expenses, the rest isn't so bad. Makes sense to me.

Also noticed this tidbit:

"Billionaire investor George Soros and his family contributed $250,000 to the inauguration"

The guy who funds Moveon.org kicking in a quarter million towards the party. I wonder if he gets a night in the Lincoln bedroom for that?

Are you saying he doesn't deserve a night or two? How much did you give? I mean, if you gave, I'm sure it's enough to have the honour of licking Barney's water bowl.

/me, I gave zero. But, then again, I'm not complaining about those who did.

In other words, Hannity and other Fox news idiots can't read at the 8th grade level required to understand the newspaper?

Or they are just deliberately misrepresenting things...?

(either way, they aren't doing anyone a damn bit of good, IMO)

triple 2009-01-23 07:43:34 PM
So they claim there were more than 3 times the amount of people that went to DC to check it out, further explain that security and bills for this kind of thing costs taxpayers money....

and then conclude it will most likely cost less when AJI.

What? How the fark did they come to that conclusion?

milk_plus 2009-01-23 07:48:30 PM
So we should expect a retraction and apology from those assmuches sometime around never, right?

Stay Cool Babylon 2009-01-23 07:48:59 PM
Hey, Sean Hannity quoted me some astronomical number without mentioning that most of it was privately funded, or that security costs were likely to be higher because four times as many people showed up for a fairly historic event.
But that's what Hannity said, so I'm now going to spread that bit of misinformation to all of my buddies who think exactly like me and don't care about the truth. What? Isn't that what all people who get their news from an agenda do?

Farking socialist.

It's the latter. I've seen Hannity manipulate economic data so bad its sickening.

And this story will live on anyway, much like the "Clinton trashed the White House before Bush came in" bullshiat still gets repeated.

Well, buddy boy, that story was true. It was documented. The Clintons had to return a lot of stuff they asconded with. They were nothing but a bunch of thieves (and still are). As for the cost of the inauguration, when Bush was having his, several key Democrats scolded him for "extravagant" spending. Well, these SAME Democrats are now "OK" with Obama's "extravagant" spending. Just shows how hypocritical Democrats are.

I think the most egregious thing the Democrats did was closing down so many public toilets. How were the Republicans going to find sweet man love, at a time when they needed it the most, if the public toilets are closed?

I'm sure he also didn't mention that four times as many people equals four times the tourist revenue. Hotels, restaurants, transportation, etc. industries made money hand over fist, and they pay taxes, overtime wages, etc. with that money. Overall, like with any major tourist event, it's a net moneymaker for government.
