Duh - Obama hates heroes. That's why I voted for him.

thomps [TotalFark] 2009-01-23 01:26:15 PM
It was the party without all of the celebrities that Obama skipped. The very people who he sought to have support him during his candidacy and campaign, who have fought to protect this country, were snubbed in favor of publicity and the opportunity to rub shoulders - yet again - with the out-of-touch Hollywood elite.

it's like going to a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert and sitting through 3 hours of encores, hearing some old favorites but nothing spectacular. then in the very last encore -BLAMO- they hit you with free bird.
well done conservative outrage - thanks for stringing me along before hitting me between the eyes with "out-of-touch hollywood elite" right at the last sentence. rock.

I'm an Obama supporter, but I'm also a combat vet, and I'm more than a little disappointed to hear about this. He'll have plenty of time to hang out with Leo and Kanye. You'd think he would have made at least an effort to spend a little bit of time with 48 guys who came about as close to death as possible without dying, to help him have the freedom to be able to run for president in the first place.

OK, let's not get ridiculous here. There was no rubbing of shoulders with the Obamas at any of the balls. The arrived, did their dance, and moved on to the next one.

I don't know if was a snub or not. But you're not doing your argument any favors by droning on about the "out-of-touch Hollywood elite."

My father keeps telling me that obama won because they bussed in homeless people from park benches to vote.

He is dead serious.

This is coming from an educated person......who started watching fox news shortly after 9/11

I can kind of see where the article's coming from. It's not a very smart move PR-wise. But the level of outrage is a bit much.

I'm thinking the tour of balls was probably an exhausting pain in the butt for Obama. That said, yeah, he should've made the time to stop in on this one. Bad call.

I'm betting he skipped it not out of spite or because he'd rather be hobnobbing with celebs, but because the frakking ball wasn't even held this year. Save your outage.

I'm outraged that Obama didn't personally FORCE someone to hold the event so he could attend! Or plan it himself and have it at the White House! Or just show up anyway and dance in an empty ballroom! He doesn't care about our old Vets!

that's not even close to the right event. the ball was indeed held.

Lando Lincoln [TotalFark] 2009-01-23 01:54:12 PM
Yeah, like he needed to attend an ELEVENTH ball where he showed up for two minutes, danced with Michelle while "At Last" played, said a few parting words and darted off?

They should have ONE ball, in the Capitol rotunda, and if there's not enough room then there's just not enough room. Too farking bad. It's a stupid ball. This is government, not a High School social. Get over it.

This sounds even worse. He might have something to do with the missing organizer.

Sorry, gotta give back my Internet. Not the same ball. The one from my link is not the "Salute to Heroes Inaugural Ball."

I still haven't seen anything on this besides some blog postings, though.

Um, I don't think that's the right ball. It doesn't have the same name.

It's a goddamn ball, for god's sake, though.

I like that the same people that are saying, "I want more than words and symbols from Obama, I demand proof, action," are the same ones saying, "Not doing this symbolic action says terrible things about Obama".

karatekitten13 [TotalFark] 2009-01-23 02:01:24 PM

Did anyone else notice the author?

"Submitted by Julie on January 21, 2009"

Really? Is she like Cher? Only one name. This is a blog post, and fake outrage at it's best. Obama went to the 10 official balls that were happening, INCLUDING the Commander In Chief ball, where he saluted ALL military personnel, not just MOH winners.

Right wing really needs to find something better to complain about, because BS like this shows why that party is going down the crapper.

However, I can't find any data on this event whatsoever, in any way, at all, ever. All google gives is page after page of OUTRAGE.

Any winners of the Medal hanging out here, who can give is the scoop?

thomps [TotalFark] 2009-01-23 02:12:19 PM
i've been searching around for any real news outlets to give context to this. all i can find are blogs linking to other blogs and news articles about wounded veterans getting really excited at the prospect of celebrating obama's inauguration at a black-tie ball. also apparently bon jovi performed.
iirc obama cut his ball tour short (was supposed to go until 3, ended up stopping at 12:30), but i can't find anything showing that he was ever scheduled to go to this ball or any history of the ball in question.
i guess what i'm saying is, i've got nothing, and as a result i am going back to work.

Obdicut [TotalFark] 2009-01-23 02:15:05 PM
Huh. This article about Bush attending last year, does not make it sound like it's a MOH event at all, but just a veteran's ball.

And Obmam did attend one military-themed ball last night: Link (new window)

I won the Medal of Honor and I can tell you that the ball is BORING! No wonder he skipped it. Just think of the most overbearing selfless martyrs you've ever met, all in the same room. It's just "Let me help you with that," "I don't mind the inconvenience," "Would you like to use one of my kidneys?" "No please, take mine!" "Well, I lost both of my kidneys in the war." ALL NIGHT LONG.

It's impossible to get in and out of the feckin building because everyone is holding the door for everyone else. Buncha damn jackasses, I tell you.

OMG, Hollywood liberal elitists! Waaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!

Do conservatives have anything better to do than find their latest non-story to get outraged about? I'm with kk13. I'm all for supporting the veterans, but this is just an asinine thing to get upset about.

Gilligann [TotalFark] 2009-01-23 02:21:01 PM
So people are really upset that he went to 10 inaugural balls and didn't try to shoehorn an 11th in?

It doesn't really matter which ball he missed, because even if he made it to this one the conservatives would find another reason to piss and moan. They would rather see this country burn to the ground then to give the new guy a chance or even the benefit of the doubt. They WANT the country to fall deeper in the hole just so they can say I told you so. You can bet they will do whatever they can to make sure that happens.

Hey-- since you seem to know what's up, could you provide a link to a page that has any information about the ball itself? The Legion of Honor had nothing on it. The DOD only has info about the military ball Obama did attend. I can't find anything about it on the Paralyzed Veterans of America's website either.

It's kind of odd, since we know it happened last year, but I can't find a single article about it this year that isn't just OUTRAGE, and has, y'know, facts and stuff.

So the plot thickens. Obama made the organizer disappear so that he wouldn't have to cancel his appearance.
