Trust me, Aretha. Compared with that poetry lady, you sounded pretty good.

Was anyone else severely let down by the John Williams song? I was expecting something more intense

Diogenes [TotalFark] 2009-01-23 11:38:44 AM
I think she did a fine job. And kudos to her for not letting the wind pick her up by the hat and blow her to Arlington.

I thought it was good. Horribly misplaced pause in the word Country, but not bad otherwise.

I was just thrilled he didn't manage to ruin "Simple Gifts."

She did well enough, but she's had much better performances.

Skail [TotalFark] 2009-01-23 12:08:43 PM
Her voice and that song were a gift, but even if she's disappointed with her performance, she should forget the past and focus on the present.

burndtdan 2009-01-23 12:38:15 PM
it was nice of her to bring a gift for the obamas, but i'm not sure why she balanced it on top of her head instead of just sitting it down on her seat while she sang.

Derwood 2009-01-23 12:43:23 PM
the Yo Yo Ma thing was being "instrument synced" according to CNN.

She did a great job. I thought she was great.

Nemo's Brother 2009-01-23 12:43:53 PM
She should have faked it the way Yo-Yo Ma and the band did.

xtragrind 2009-01-23 12:46:30 PM
All I could think about was the poor guy that had to sit behind her the whole time with that battleship of a hat...

a_room_with_a_moose 2009-01-23 12:47:11 PM
She paused at the wrong point when singing "count-ry".

Classic.

Hey now subby. Don't you go dissin Aretha

The lady deserves respect.

apeiron242 2009-01-23 12:48:33 PM
Disappointed with her performance, but glad it wasn't Beyonce'.

wolvernova 2009-01-23 12:51:17 PM
She sounded like the singer for the Soul Glo commercial.

I'm not sure any force of nature could move her.

To be fair, that's where the pause is in that song. She just paused a bit too long between "coun" and "try".

I liked the hat, but it should come with a warning: Do not wear unless you are the Queen of Soul.

DarnoKonrad 2009-01-23 12:52:55 PM
middling.

Wait...she when she paused, it sounded like she said 'count' minus the 'o?'

I would have expected the 'Think of the children!' freaks to jump all over that one already.

A comparable gravitational field. Jupiter, perhaps?

The way it started it sounded like the Jurassic Park theme.

With all due respect to the queen of soul, it would take a category 5 hurricane to move that woman.

She has one of the greatest voices of all time, but she needs to put down the twinkies. :p

Something was discussed on the goofy morning radio show I enjoy and I'm trying to determine if it's true or if the call who called in was an idiot and the host just ran with it.

Is it true that Aretha never has a live back-up band because she has a severe gas problem and no musician in the world is willing to stand behind her?

I'm sure it's not true, but if it is that's farking hilarious.

SanchoKobe 2009-01-23 12:57:06 PM
I've heard Aretha do a lot worse at various Thanksgiving Day parades in Detroit. She sounded pretty darn good on Tuesday, I think.

"Simple Gifts" was played at my dad's funeral. It sounded better then, but maybe that's just...like...my opinion, man.

I wouldn't be surprised, she probably got a steak she ate in '79 still stuck in her colon.

As someone who's very much into poetry, this.

But given say, 3 weeks to come up with a poem that can't be too strange and has to celebrate the inauguration, it's not an easy task.

Nemo's Brother: She should have faked it the way Yo-Yo Ma and the band did.

The military band didn't fake it. Only yo-yo ma's part was, and that was largely out of concern apparently about their string instruments in the cold.

=======================

he probably wrote it last week in about 2 hours.

I doubt he put much work into it.
A) Because it was very short.
B) It was probably short notice
C) It would only be heard once.

Kind of like Sousa did with the Foshay Tower opening.

ARETHA FRANKLIN'S BREASTS APPLY FOR STATEHOOD
Republicans Worry That New 'Boob' States Would Support Democrats

DETROIT -- Aretha Franklin is behind, literally, a growing movement to grant statehood to her two enormous breasts.

"The two masses have a an area in square miles the equivalent of Vermont and New Hampshire, and I see no compelling reason that they should not be granted statehood," says the movement's spokesperson, Harry Smiderson.

Republicans in Washington are terrified that the movement may gain momentum in the current anti-Bush atmosphere. "Two large, African-American breasts are likely to generate senators and representatives that vote along with the democrats, and this is a scenario we cannot allow," says National Republican Party spokesperson, Roger Snick.

Ms. Franklin has refused to comment to media about the issue.

I'm just glad there was no wardrobe malfunction.

Or, I guess in her case, a tarpaulin malfunction.

A women buys grocery in her neighborhood
Kids play
The sun shines in the blue sky
This is pure crap

That makes sense.

Harsh cold like they had combined with windy conditions can certainly have a strong negative impact on a singer.

Plus she was AWFUL.
