That's not nonsense. That's a conscience coming clean. Kudos.

This got a greenlight. Wow.

This guy (the singer) sounds like a douche. So his dad is a lobbyist and works for big corporate vs. America. Should those people not be represented? This is a democracy, last I checked.

Berman is a rich kid who'd never gotten where he was without daddy's money. Well, that and Stephen Malkmus.

Dupa [TotalFark] 2009-01-23 11:33:57 AM
How can I listen to him when he is a product of all that evilness?

Dammit-Hi 2009-01-23 11:36:13 AM
At least we'll have Smith & Jones Forever.

"When the sun sets on the ghetto all the broken stuff gets cold."

Good band.

waahh. my daddy's rich. I feel guilty.

Silver Jews are great though.

Show me an indie rocker and I'll show you his rich dad.

//sorry
//not really completely true

Sure his dad is free to represent scumbag corporations, but we are free to think the guy is a dickbag for doing so. Come on, the guy represented the tobacco lobby among others. You know, the people who spent decades flat out lying about the fact that their product kills millions of people.

Who is this asshole and why is he polluting my Fark with his dribblings?

Well, he has a number of bullshiat fake "consumer" groups that do spin and attack pieces on real consumer groups, the link is pretty damning:

bermanexposed.org (pops)

That's some bottom-feeder stuff right there. Unlike most "cause" celeb blogs, Berman Jr is actually talking about something he knows quite a bit about. I found it effective, if a bit personal.

Stray Slacker 2009-01-23 12:05:44 PM
Wow. I never thought I'd see a Silver Jews link on Fark. Always loved his lyrics.

/tan line on my ring finger

Sure, you either haven't heard of Silver Jews and bother to type the usual 'who?' posts or you heard them somehow and it didn't work out for you but you still feel compelled to waste energy stating that...
I don't understand 'who?' posts, they make no sense.
I don't understand 'I didn't like them' posts.
Great, I don't like ice cream, it's full of crap. I don't know every flavor of ice cream. I don't feel any need to say that like I have internet-tourettes every time the subject comes up.
Nobody expects anyone else to like everything, know everything or even to have anything approaching a 'give a damn' about everything but the music tab has probably 25% interesting/funny/conversational/something that actually goes somewhere posts and the rest is 'who?' or 'they suck'.

The filter should change 'who?' into 'I'm in the wrong thread, sorry'.

Anyway, I liked the Jews. They set the tone perfectly in '98 when I was going through a big break up in London. And again recently when I left Nashville post-divorce - 'Tennessee' was one of the few tracks that (words aside) captured that mood and atmosphere.

Try them, they had merit.

Troubles
No troubles
On the line

And I can't stand to see you
I can't stand to see you
when you're crying at home

Scotch and penicillin
Please try carlton
A cold, black maple hanger
And husbands on the run

I just got back from a dream attack
That took me by surprise
And in there I met a lady
Her name was Shady Sides
And she said:

It's been evening all day long
It's been evening all day long and
How can something so old be so wrong

Sin and gravity
Drag me down to sleep
To dream of trains across the sea
Trains across the sea

Half hours on earth
What are they worth
I don't know

In twenty-seven years
I drunk fifty thousand beers
And they just wash against me
Like the sea into a pier

Also, who?

Got to see him play once, it was great. His book of poetry is odd, seems like songs he never had a melody for.

turnonyrlovelite [TotalFark] 2009-01-23 05:43:53 PM
David Berman is a (semi) genius. I saw the Silver Jews in the fall, expecting a mediocre live performance of his mediocre last album, but he came out and blew the place away. He had hundreds of bags of skittles and threw them into the audience throughout the show. His lyrics are incredible, and his book of poetry, "Actual Air," is bizarre and wonderful in an accessible kind of way. He's the reason I chose to study writing.

/and also the reason I'll always be poor

Tatsuma, where are you? I mean this article is about Silver Jews! C'mon! We all wanna hear your two cents on this one, buddy!

Stray Slacker: Pop band? What in the hell are you talking about?

"popular music"

It's a term for commercial music. Tonal stuff.

Yeah, I listen to only atonal 20th Century compositions because the sound of a guitar is for children. Deal with it.

BRENDAN-FACE 2009-01-24 01:06:33 PM
For those of us with decent to good taste in music, this is some pretty crappy news.

The rest of you are, as the ancients would have said, "stupid." (I may be misquoting)

donpooner 2009-01-24 11:08:59 PM
The first time I heard the Silver Jews I was on Pandora radio.

The first chord of New Orleans came up and it was an oh shiat moment.

Dropped everything I was doing and listened in awe at the awesomeness that was coming threw my speakers.

Probibly 60% of my play lists have been all silver Jews every since.

dholway [TotalFark] 2009-01-25 01:12:53 AM
If I weren't already a fan, I'd convert to Judaism.
