meh, the article made some valid points, how is one to request official papers to assimialte if one ask for 'em.

TopoGigo 2009-01-23 06:07:43 AM
WTF? Now, I firmly believe that immigrants need to learn English. If you move here, you should be able to speak enough English to conduct business, vote, stop at a stop sign, and not use a hair dryer while sleeping. At least within 5 years. Your children should be fluent in English by the time they're out of school. Their children should grow up speaking English, and should be largely accent-free. Assimilate by the third generation. It's reasonable.

But English only laws? What useful purpose could they possibly serve? Other than a big "fark YOU!!!" to immigrants? Who, by the way, we need in this country.

I live in Appalachia. We've been poor longer than most of the country here, and the last sons of the depression are just retiring now. Trust me--there's a huge difference in the way people work with every generation removed from poverty. (Not the "I live on welfare and I can't pay the cable bill" kind of poverty. I mean the "My kids are going to die of malnutrition if I don't shovel out the chicken coop for $5" kind.) I'm two generations removed from the depression. I work easily twice as hard as any of the snot-nosed college farks I've worked with, and they whine about making minimum wage. My 56 year old father works way harder than I ever thought about working. And he tells me stories about how his father, in his 60's, could work easily twice as hard as he could at 18. My kids will be the same distance from the depression as most 25 year olds today, god help them. We need some new blood, somebody who knows what hunger feels like. Otherwise, our 40 hour work week, with about 10 hours worth of work, will finish bankrupting our nation.

Oh, I highly agree. One does, indeed, want to be in the latter group. (For me personally, I dislike management. I've done it. I honestly love being a poorly paid line cook. Unfortunately, I can't afford it, so I deliver pizza. That doesn't satisfy me, but I do get to see scantily-clad girls all night, and I make the cash equivalent of $20/hr.) The fact remains, though, that somebody has to be in the trenches. If those people won't work hard, the job takes twice the time to get finished. Costing twice as much. Resources are limited, so we are less productive as a result of a lack of motivation.

Heh. Of course, there's plenty of management types who put less effort than they could into their jobs, too.

So who exactly are these dastardly immigrants who are fighting tooth and nail to not learn English? Every immigrant I meet wants to know English (and more importantly, for their kids to know it) so that they can get ahead in the US. The idea that hanging a sign up that says "Empleados tiene que lavar sus manos antes de regresar a trabajo" in the bathroom is molly codling immigrants and encouraging them to not learn English seems like the a pretty bizarre idea to me.

Aint nothing wrong with that. Speaking your native tongue is no problem as long as you are familiar with the language of the host country in which you have settled.

Yeah, because most people are obviously perfect, and a simple spelling mistake is proof an individual has come from inferior genetic stock and must be cleansed.

Also, I'm not in Korea any more, and I have never touched Kimchi in my life.

My position is that a primary language is critical for any nation-state, and that facilitating the inclusion of other languages is inefficient, and hinders the smooth functioning of business, society and government.

None of which is, by the way, underminded by a simple spelling mistake.
