Or...Obama takes time out of his schedule to visit with some people and they want to talk business while he was just saying hello and seeing how people were doing.

Sounds a bit more real.

He said there will be a press conference for questions.

How bout a little patience. He is currently busy trying to change some things that have been wrong for a number of years now.

I wish him luck

Well, that's what you get for trying to be nice...

"Hey guys, just wanted to pop in an say Hel--"

"Mr. President, what's up with this, that, and the other??"

"Hey, now, I just came down here to pay a vis--"

"Come on, Mr. President. WHAT'S UP WITH THIS, THAT, AND THE OTHER?"

"Alright, look, jerkwad. We'll have a real press conference and you can grill me then all you like. I just decided to take a moment and come say hello to you all and get a feeling for who you are and hopefully to establish a bit of professional rapport. I didn't have to come here today. Just thought I'd be a bit friendly with the people I'll be working with before we get down to business and you guys attempt to tear me apart. Is that too much to ask? Just a friendly 'Hello'?"

"OMG, THE PRESIDENT IS IRRITATED AT THE PRESS!!!!"

Stay classy, press corps.

Benevolent Misanthrope [TotalFark] 2009-01-23 12:12:08 AM
"Alright, come on" he said, with obvious irritation in his voice. "We will be having a press conference at which time you can feel free to [ask] questions. Right now, I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself to you guys - that's all I was trying to do."

Journalists are like cops and lawyers - generally asshats, extremely annoying, self-important... and totally necessary in a free society.

But come on, guys - he popped in to say hello. He should have known better, since you're all assholes, but he did it anyway. Save it for the press conference.

Calmamity [TotalFark] 2009-01-23 12:14:39 AM
Wait your turn, Politico. Let the main say hello to folks.

You're dancing like a 6 year old who needs to pee.

It's a non-story that he went down there to say hi.
It's a non-story that the reporters behaved like rabid dogs in heat reporters.
It's a non-story that Bammy threw back a little serious face.

Bush must have handled his surprise visit to introduce himself to the press corps in the first week of his presidency much better.

He was exploring his new mansion and decided to go see what the press corps does when it's not recording everything that happens.

CitizenTed [TotalFark] 2009-01-23 12:38:01 AM
This story reminds me of an incident at work this summer. We had a special week-long project that required getting some temps. I needed to make sure these guys were capable and had an eye for detail and would work well together. Day One, 8am:

ME: Good morning, gentleman! I am Citizen Ted. Before we start with orientation, I'd like to just have a cup of coffee with you guys and get to know you.

NEWSWEEK: Sounds OK to me. Got any milk? I don't like that powdered stuff.

WASHINGTON POST: Oh, good. I need a second cup.

NEW YORK TIMES: Any bagels by chance? With lox and cream cheese?

POLITICO: I want you to know that the temp agency mandates that I get TWO 15-minute breaks, one before lunch and one after. I do NOT have to work for more than three hours without a break at any time during the day. IT'S IN THE CONTRACT.

ME: Hey man, this is coffee time. We can talk about the schedule later-

POLITICO: No. I want this clear from the START. I hope you're not one of those companies that just works us without breaks.

ME: Um, this is coffee time. What's your name?

/He lasted about 2 hours. I actually needed his useless ass. But his colleagues hated him. I sent him home. (No breaks).
//He doubtless tells stories about me, the "guy who got agitated when faced with a substantive question".

Fubini 2009-01-23 01:07:27 AM
He should invite that reporter up to his office one morning for coffee. When he gets there, he (Obama) should make chitchat for as long as he can without bringing up policy. If he (reporter) can go 15 minutes then he gets to stay in the White House. If not, he gets barred. It'd be funny and arbitrary.

pnjunction [recently expired TotalFark] 2009-01-23 01:07:49 AM
jyoders19: Who walks into a roomful of reporters and doesn't expect to be asked questions?

Somebody who's paying them a spontaneous personal visit rather than an official one?

It's like you go over to your new bosses house for dinner and he starts dressing you down about work. Can he? Sure, but he's being a dick when you just went over there to introduce yourself and get to know each other.

musashi1600 2009-01-23 01:08:47 AM
FTA: Pressed further by the Politico reporter about his Pentagon nominee, William J. Lynn III, Obama turned more serious, putting his hand on the reporter's shoulder and staring him in the eye.

"Alright, come on" he said, with obvious irritation in his voice. "We will be having a press conference at which time you can feel free to [ask] questions. Right now, I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself to you guys - that's all I was trying to do."

Because it was a completely unnecessary thing to do to begin with. The 4 reporters were the pool reporters assigned to him at the time. They witnessed the event, took pictures, and recorded it - how could calling in CNN have made it more transparent?

Lighten up, Francis.

I'd say give him a pass. It wasn't his regularly scheduled briefing (it was scheduled for later) and he's on his second day of the job.

/Too bad you guys couldn't get past Bush's horrible communication skills once in a while.

While I must complement you on the majority of your list, I must lightly object to the inclusion of canyoneer. He's a crotchedly old man, and not a wharrgrbler or troll.

Similar to how Weaver95 has been transformed since the early years of the Bush administration, I still have hopes for him as well.

Fireproof: Can someone explain that to me? I've seen that a few times now.

Members of the Butt-Hurt Brigade. They come in, shiat up a thread with outlandish bullshiat, make half-assed defenses of their bullshiat (if that), constantly fling different bullshiat to keep the flow of bullshiat going, and also clutter up the place with a few pictures mocking Obama in some stupid way. This is how they relax and enjoy life.

the press aren't exactly asking critically important questions. we're trying to pull the country out of a serious downward economic and geopolitical spiral, and they're scandal-hunting over the minutia (of fuchsia).

our press basically thinks that their job is to catch him when someone sneezes and he doesn't say "bless you", and other such trivialities.

Are you really saying he hasn't gotten a lot done already? I think the guy has gotten more done in two days than Bush did in the first three months of his Presidency.

I think he should of known better. You don't walk into a room full of journalists to just say "hi" and not expect questions to start pouring out, or in this case one question.

It's their job to ask questions, they will do whatever it takes to ask them.
