He was kind of a douchebag in the Senate, but he's done more good in his "retirement" gigs than most of us do over a lifetime.

Where does the "bad news... for Obama" meme come from. Without knowing, i've always thought it was the dumbest meme on fark. It pains me more than the constant misuse of the "just kidding" meme. I hope that knowing where it came from will raise its status some. (not counting on it).

things that were obviously good news for Obama would get spin in some crazy centrifuge and the media would find some crazy way it could be bad for Obama.

God you people are full of HATE and ANGER. No wonder that palistinians suffer so much.

The quote was from Paul Findley the courageous American congressman.
The Likudniks are not the only Jews trying to influence American Foreign policy in favor of Israel. You don't think Obama was under a lot of pressure to put in another David Ross?

We can only pray that Obama can stand up to the big Democratic donors and go after a real peace. After watching the last 30 years or so of American foreign policy I am justifiabley pessimistic.

GoodasGold

Good that you don't live in Nashville, isn't it? [due to your tenuous grasp of English]

Isn't it possible that Findley lost his seat due to voters being dissatisfied with him? He claimed that Adlai Stevenson III was also tossed out by "pro-Israel" forces, but Stevenson didn't run for congress in 1980, and in 1982 was running for Governor of Illinois, where there is little interaction with Israel itself (although there are many Jews in Chicago area).

No, you are a total moran. I'm not exactly Israel's biggest fan, but you are just a dumbass. I get it, your schtick is being an anti-semetic troll. At least put some effort in it dude. Mitchell is A FUKKING LEBANESE ARAB. AIPAC and others were already biatching about him maybe being picked. You made up a quote nobody would believe in a million years.

In short, if you can't even do enough with your life to be a decent TROLL, kill yourself.

And Findley is a crank. Nothing he says or accuses is backed up with anything other than "I heard that!". He's a hack. A joke.

Which, according to genetics, makes him half Lebanese.

Here's a quote from Findley, GoodasGold:
The New York Times gave public attention to views of both Killgore and myself. The newspaper reported that I have blamed AIPAC for my re-election defeat in 1982 and quoted me, accurately, as referring to the U.S. government as "Israeli-occupied territory." In fact, AIPAC's Thomas Dine has stated publicly that over 90 percent of $750,000 in funds that went to my opponent that year came from pro-Israel sources from across the country.

Now, if you went door-to-door in 1982 and asked Americans about their feelings towards Israel, I'd imagine most were pretty "pro". This was in the years after Entebbe, after Munich.

Findley might as well have declared that he was defeated by football watchers.

The best part about this pick is the head of the ADL came out against it because he said Mitchell has too much of a "reputation as an honest broker", and is "too fair and even handed".

Dude, you're not supposed to actually say that out loud.

Some Jewish leaders say the very qualities that may appeal to the Obama administration - Mitchell's reputation as an honest broker - could spark unhappiness, if not outright opposition, from some pro-Israel groups.

"Sen. Mitchell is fair. He's been meticulously even-handed," said Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League. "But the fact is, American policy in the Middle East hasn't been 'even handed' - it has been supportive of Israel when
JTS it felt Israel needed critical U.S. support.

"So I'm concerned," Foxman continued. "I'm not sure the situation requires that kind of approach in the Middle East."

Ok. Foxman has been on a roll lately.
First it was. on Olmert shaming rice
"I have no problem with what Olmert did," said Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League. "I think the mistake was to talk about it in public."

Not sure if it matters "who" (*), so much as "what" they bring -- whether it be the offers of help or hurt, and whether the principals are interested. One doesn't necessarily have to go as far as Nixon and Kissinger's use of lowering DEFCON to underscore seriousness, but rational states are going to look more at cost/benefit than personal charm... and for long-standing crises like the Palestinian mess, it is not entirely unlikely that practically every plausible option has already been suggested and analyzed in some detail. Everybody has an opinion on it; there's even an op-ed on it from everybody's favorite visionary Colonel in a recent NYT.

(*) So long as the 'who' doesn't look like a deliberate insult. Appointing Fred Phelps ambassador to the Vatican would be unwise, unless the objective is actually to offend them.
