Well, if you want to ensure that there will be no escapes, Alcatraz Island would be perfect. Plus, it would give the good LGBT, feminist, and non-believing folk of San Francisco a nice, up close view of the people we're fighting, and how the first thing people like this would do if they had their way is slaughter every LGBT, feminist, and non-believer in the Bay Area.

My favorite response to Obama closing Gitmo I have found so far comes from a poster on FreeRepublic.

Please note that Texas is the only state with a legal right to secede from the Union . (Reference the Texas-American Annexation Treaty of 1848.)

We Texans love y'all, but we'll probably have to
Take action since B. Hussein Obama won the election. We'll miss you too.

Here is what can happen:

#1: Barack Hussein Obama becomes President of the United States , Texas immediately secedes from the Union .

#2: George W. Bush will become the President of the Republic of Texas .

So what does Texas have to do to survive as a Republic?

1. NASA is just south of Houston , Texas . We will control the space industry.

2. We refine over 85% of the gasoline in the United States .

3. Defense Industry-we have over 65% of it. The term "Don't mess with Texas ," will take on a whole
New meaning.

4. Oil - we can supply all the oil that the Republic of Texas will need for the next 300 years. Yankee states? Sorry about that.

5. Natural Gas - again we have all we need and it's too bad about those Northern States. John Kerry will have to figure out a way to keep them warm....

6. Computer Industry - we currently lead the nation in producing computer chips and communications-small companies like Texas Instruments, Dell Computer, EDS, Raytheon,
> National Semiconductor, Motorola, Intel, AMD, Atmel, Applied Materials, Ball Miconductor, Dallas Semiconductor, Delphi, Nortel, Alcatel, etc, etc. The list goes on and on.

7. Medical Care - We have the largest research centers for cancer research, the best burn centers and the top trauma units in the world, as well as other large health centers. Dallas has some of the best hospitals in the United States .

8. We have enough colleges to keep us going: University of Texas , Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Rice, SMU, University of Houston , Baylor, UNT ( University of North Texas ), Texas
Women's University, etc. Ivy grows better in the South anyway.

9. We have a ready supply of workers. We could just open the border when we need some more.

10. We have essential control of the paper industry, plastics, insurance, etc.

11. In case of a foreign invasion, we have the Texas
National Guard and the Texas Air National
Guard. We don't have an Army, but since everybody down here has at least six rifles and a pile of ammo, we can raise an Army in 24 hours if we need one. If the situation really gets bad,
We can always call the Department of Public Safety and ask them to send over Chuck Norris and a couple of Texas Rangers.

12. We are totally self-sufficient in beef, poultry, hogs, and several types of grain, fruit and vegetables, and let's not forget seafood from the Gulf. Also, everybody down here knows how to cook them so that they taste good. Don't need any food.

This just names a few of the items that will keep the Republic of Texas in good shape. There isn't a thing out there that we need and don't have.

Now to the rest of the United States under President Obama:

Since you won't have the refineries to get gas for your cars, only President Obama will be able to drive around in his big 9 mpg SUV. The rest of the United States will have to walk or ride bikes.

You won't have any TV as the Space Center in Houston will cut off satellite communications.

You won't have any natural gas to heat your homes, but since Mr. Obama has predicted global warming, you will not need the gas as long as you survive the 2000 years it will take to get enough heat from Global Warming.

Signed, The People of Texas

P.S. This is not a threatening letter - just a note to give you something to think about!

SLEEP WELL TONIGHT THE EYES OF TEXAS ARE UPON YOU!!

One Nation Under God

I'm not sure about the technological advances that have occurred over the past decades, but wasn't Alcatraz shut down because it costs an incredible amount of money to transport men, water, food to the island to keep the thing running.

Granted, it costs a shiatload of money to keep people in a supermax type facility anyway, but I was under the impression that is the reason Alcatraz was cost-ineffective.

The problem, politically speaking, as anyone who lives near a big jail will tell you, is what and more specifically who might accompany them. I live in a town with 2 maximum security state prisons.

When someone is transferred to one of these prisons family or friends invariably move here, most are on welfare and have no intention of getting off and many are criminals themselves. You cannot believe the strain that puts on our local community, services and programs.

It is a safe bet that the people that congresscritters pretend to serve and who live near an appropriate facility have been calling, faxing, emailing and shouting this point. Therefore no one wants these people coming to their district.

Well, yeah...it's a cool idea. If only because if there was ever an escape plot hatched, then we might actually get to see a Sean Connery/Nick Cage style siege upon the island take place. However, the sheer cost to update and continue running the place is ridiculous.

I'm not sure of actual cost comparisons between building something new or creating an add-on to some place like ADX Florence or the SHU at Pelican Bay...but I fail to see why this is some big argument.

I'd surmise that it'd be quite a bit more difficult for someone coming overseas as opposed to coming from Mexico.

Of course, it'd be kinda depressing if bush spent the better part of his presidency trying to avoid such things and the relatives of terrorists could so easily enter our country. Well, maybe more on the funny side.

Your argument as to why people don't want the GITMO prisoners in their district is still off point, though.

People don't want them because it will bring welfare relatives to their area. They don't want them because they don't want to be the people with the terrorists imprisoned in their district.

Thanks for nothing these past 8 years. Hope you enjoy your 401(k).

Here is what can happen:

Good riddance.

#2: George W. Bush will become the President of the Republic of Texas .

FAIL

So what does Texas have to do to survive as a Republic?

Nuke itself.

1. NASA is just south of Houston , Texas . We will control the space industry.

No one cares about the space industry, dumbass.

2. We refine over 85% of the gasoline in the United States .

If you wanted to last more than a month before you have a revolution, you would keep doing just that. Trade, biatches.

3. Defense Industry-we have over 65% of it. The term "Don't mess with Texas ," will take on a whole
New meaning.

That number is seriously debatable. Industries will move out immediately to the bigger, more-likely-not-to-be-invaded-or-overthrown country Texas seceded from.

4. Oil - we can supply all the oil that the Republic of Texas will need for the next 300 years. Yankee states? Sorry about that.

Sure, that's why the overwhelming majority of oil you process is from Saudi Arabia, right? Regardless, you will gleefully sell oil to the US so none of this will change.

What the hell are you smoking? Most chips come from Taiwan.

7. Medical Care - We have the largest research centers for cancer research, the best burn centers and the top trauma units in the world, as well as other large health centers. Dallas has some of the best hospitals in the United States .

You have good hospitals, but as usual, you think that you are the best and only. WRONG.

8. We have enough colleges to keep us going: University of Texas , Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Rice, SMU, University of Houston , Baylor, UNT ( University of North Texas ), Texas
Women's University, etc. Ivy grows better in the South anyway.

Meh.

9. We have a ready supply of workers. We could just open the border when we need some more.

Yep, and they will promptly vote you out when they get a majority and vote to join Mexico.

10. We have essential control of the paper industry, plastics, insurance, etc.

You should use more lube when you pull things out of your ass.

11. In case of a foreign invasion, we have the Texas

You can't support your own population.

This just names a few of the items that will keep the Republic of Texas in good shape. There isn't a thing out there that we need and don't have.

Facepalm.

Now to the rest of the United States under President Obama:

Since you won't have the refineries to get gas for your cars, only President Obama will be able to drive around in his big 9 mpg SUV. The rest of the United States will have to walk or ride bikes.

Nah, he likes Lincoln. Lincoln knew how to deal with seceders.

You won't have any TV as the Space Center in Houston will cut off satellite communications.

That's not how it works, dude.

You won't have any natural gas to heat your homes, but since Mr. Obama has predicted global warming, you will not need the gas as long as you survive the 2000 years it will take to get enough heat from Global Warming.

You are truly an intellectual giant.

Signed, The People of Texas

I didn't say mine was the only reason, just that it was a reason. Add to that the stigma of having them there and some other issues and it is easy to understand why no one really wants them. There is just no upside.

Welfare is actually only a small part of the problem. Crime goes up. Schools suffer, neighborhood blight, parks get abused, community programs deteriorate. It is bad all around.

friendinpa: That's kind of the point, right now they can't. Nothing to keep them from coming to Leavenworth Kansas though.

What sort of visas would they possibly be getting?

As for the prisoners in GITMO I think the government needs to shiat or get off the pot. Either find something to charge 'em with, or resettle them.

If no other countries will take some of these low level guys that were caught up in the dragnet (and you can't even find proof that they killed someone or other crimes to get them a normal criminal sentence) then, well, the US really needs to say "my bad" and take them. Oh, there's whining about how the US has laws against people who ever belonged to terrorist organizations to settle (so they won't accept lots of regular Iraqi refugees either) but it's under their control to make the exception.

The actual criminals with proven cases can go into the high security prison system. I see no reason why they should need special jails, places like Florence should do.

Some of the people were picked up for things like being in Afghanistan at training camps, then it turns out they were training to (hopefully, from their POV) take part in things like the Uighur separatists movement in China. So China doesn't want 'em. But... they didn't do anything yet, and their movement wasn't even anything against the US. If they settle, then eventually go back to China illegally to fight that later, well, they're on their own at that point.

Then you've got guys with conspiracy charges of various kinds, fine, prove those, put them away, but it's not like they're some sort of Houdini supermen. You can hold them in a supermax.

Bottom line though, the intake of prisoners to start with was farked when there were bounties offered to people to turn in their neighbors.

Oil is fungible. It's a world commodity. That's why all this "we refine all the oil!!!" is stupid, it's also why the "let's just drill ANWR and keep it all for ourselves!!!" is stupid. Good capitalists that they are, they'll sell on the world market just like they do now.
