if you have to wear masks or costumes for anything other than live shows just to get noticed, your band probably sucks.

Jeez...that guy's even more retarded than his fans.

That's not saying much considering that trash cans are where most of Metallica's albums can be found as of late.

BigSnatch [TotalFark] 2009-01-22 01:12:35 PM
Well Slipknot already sucks more than Metallica so if being a bigger band has anything to do with sucking, he's right.

Nothing against Slipknot, but they'll never be bigger than Metallica.

Hate Slipknot, but I saw a video of drummer Joey Jordison playing drums upside down. His whole kit flipped.

That's awesome in my book.

Tommy Lee used to do that back in the day. (new window) I'm sure others have too.

I think the drummer in Blink-182 has done that trick too. So I guess it isn't really that cool...

In order to do that you have to sue your fans

AdolfOliverPanties [TotalFark] 2009-01-22 03:32:21 PM
They've got 8 dudes in the band, Metallica only has 4.

That must be what he meant.

I don't get it. All you need is a rotating cage and you can do anything upside down...BDF. "My mechanic Chris fixed the head gasket on my Buick....UPSIDE DOWN, man!"

Won't make the Buick run better than if it was done right-side-up.

Love 'em or hate 'em, Metallica was huge. And still is huge in parts of the world. You just can't deny the enormity that was Metallica when the black album came out. As someone in the comments in the article said, Metallica bought fans of different kind of metal together. I know it's been said before, but I think the era of the superbands is over, at least for now. I'm sure at some point it will cycle around again and we will have a single band that has that amount of power and influence, but I don't see it happening any time soon.

/Don't bother telling me how they stole some of their early material from the new wave of Brit Metal (which I realize), or how they suck after Puppets (which I don't agree with), or how St. Anger sucked (well it kinda did). Like I said, love them or hate them, they were huge, I just happen to love them. But I do try to stay objective and not automatically defend everything they do.
//check out that long farkin slashie

Sir Digby 2009-01-22 03:58:27 PM
Oh yeah, the point of all my nonsense above is that Slipknot isn't the next Metallica, they don't appeal enough to metalheads and mainstream at the same time.

Came here to say this. Trash cans would arguably sound better than Lars' snare drum made out of diamond plate. I don't believe Tama wanted seven hundred bucks for those things.

love 'em or hate 'em, slipknot have made some damn fine metal records, write some great songs, and their live show is just farking killer. they can control a crowd like no band i have seen.

bigger than metallica? no, i don't think so. no metal band will probably ever reach metallica's one time success.

better than metallica? in their current state, probably.

Absolutely detest slipknot and similar (nu-metal) music, but I do admit that their drummer beats the shiat out of Lars.

tailormadebassist 2009-01-22 10:28:30 PM
Wow...some Slipknot hate.

I love to listen to them myself. Will they ever be as big as Metallica...yet to be seen. But, probably not.

Slipknot puts on an awesome show. The guys in the band are extremely talented, including the percussionists. Some of the guys are kinda assholish...but then again, that goes for alot of bands.

Anyways....what I'm trying to get too is...Slipknot is a gateway drug to other metal. What some of you call "real" metal. So yeah, they're huge for a reason. Get over it.

Patterson 2009-01-22 10:33:33 PM
tailormadebassist: So yeah, they're huge for a reason.

People have crummy taste in music. It doesn't make me angry or affect me in any way, it's merely an observation. If you like crappy music, that's great. Just like if you find poop to be delectable and better tasting than steak, then GREAT. Just don't force me to listen to crap or to say it tastes just like steak. It's crap.

well tehy must be doing something right by the amount of money they rake in (from angsty teens or whatever). the drummer Joey plays a gold plated drum set and just got a $60,000.00 royalty check from pearl drums and thats just a daily drop in the bucket for those guys.

FTFA: Slipknot hasn't peaked yet?

They were a local joke when I was a high school freshman (1999)- every single Iowan was no further than three degrees of separation from Slipknot (I'm two degrees in two separate ways). I've never listened to any of their music, so I don't have an opinion either way, but by the time I graduated high school I thought general consensus was that Slipknot had had its day.

Jimsus 2009-01-23 04:20:47 AM
Slipknot was really bad live every time I saw them. There are like 15 guys on stage and half of them don't have instruments. At one point during the show (Ozzfest) two of the guys were on all fours hitting their heads on the ground. Seems to me if the song sounds the same with your head hitting the ground or doing whatever it is you claim to do in the band then your role is irrelevant.

/also agree with the person above that said the day of the huge bands in over for a while. We are an age that like to mock celebrities as soon as they get too big. There is no God like status to be worshiped when the day before you saw pictures of your favorite rock star buying a latte at Starbucks

All I want to say is that Slipknot is basically for people that used to listen to Insane Clown Posse, but they don't like rap anymore.

/still douches, though

Even for those who do not like Metallica, I did not think anyone involved with metal would debate the sheer hugeness of that band... until now. Metallica is one of the best selling bands of all time, and any band that can get multiple 8 minute singles on the radio has to be doing something right (even it it's just using their left over power from the 80s).

/hated St. Anger
// LOVE Death Magnetic

Wasilla Hillbilly 2009-01-25 01:05:09 AM
The odds are seriously stacked against anyone repeating Metallica's run. The industry isn't really built that way anymore. Plus its a statement almost as silly as the Beatles' "bigger than Jesus".
