The last time he asked to be allowed to be dictator for life and was rejected, he put up signs ominously saying "For now..." ("Por Ahora...").

So obviously this second attempt was coming, but now he's stated very publicly that this will be his last attempt at changing the rules to be allowed to stay in power forever.

I assume if he loses this round, signs will pop up around Caracas saying "Just kidding..."

/or maybe he'll find a new idol in Vladimir Putin and become Prime Minister
//and give executive power to the PM

Lt. Cheese Weasel 2009-01-22 12:52:07 PM
Por Ahora was most definitely a threat. El Stupido isn't going away without a fight.

I love that Citgo and Exxon told him to go Fark himself recently after he nationalized everything. Now, gas prices are down, and his golden goose is laying turds on his dreams of socialist paradise. He doesn't have the evil Bush anymore distract the peons with.

I'm counting the days until someone puts his head on a spike.

Chavez to step down? We better invade Venezuela to free their people and purchase a new government before we miss this chance. Either that or you can continue to tell yourself that the risk is worth waging your children over.

Too bad the Mayans didn't make it to Venezuela, they could have let them know this threat is moot cause the world ends in 2012.

He's been acting democratically since he was elected, this is par for the course, but you HAVE to believe he's a dictator.
I mean, he didn't like Bush. Who else but a dictator would dislike Bush?

See, just like that. Hey, Canada doesn't have term limits, that means their prime ministers are all dictators for life too!

Pretty much.

I mean, he is an asstard, but he's not exactly a threat to the US. About the only card he has to play is oil, but they're too dependent on oil exports to the US for that to be hugely significant.

They have an awful lot of oil. Shadowboxing is good practice and gets the crowd fired up before the big show. :(

Brazil's economy was humming along, and Argentina is relatively stable.

Perhaps it has something to do with the Spanish raping the land of all of its resources and the US & USSR farking with their governments for the past 70 years.

No. Nothing the US ever did was bad.
You are a horrible person for implying that the US could do anything but be perfect and good and holy 100% of the time.

If he doesn't like the US, it's because he HATES FREEDOM, don't you see? It's the ONLY reason!

I too would like an answer to this ...

so he nationalized what was being stolen from the country and actually created programs for the people with that money...

we , spent public money to help corporations with out forcing them to help the people...

yup .. chavez is clearly an idiot...

F42: See, just like that. Hey, Canada doesn't have term limits, that means their prime ministers are all dictators for life too!

Ok... incremental step towards becoming dictator for life (removal of term limits, lengthening of terms, expansion of power, etc).

He sees himself as a communist revolutionary, idolizes Castro, and once attempted to take over the government by force... the whole democracy thing was his second choice. Should be interesting once he loses once again on this issue.

Personally, I don't believe he wants strong ties with China for the good of his country. He wants the strong ties as part of his plan to take permanent control.

As someone tried to point out earlier, to see what happens when you don't get rid of potential tyrants, see Mugabe.

He didn't bail them out, he just took them over. Like the entire oil industry in his country.

F42: If he doesn't like the US, it's because he HATES FREEDOM, don't you see? It's the ONLY reason!

He doesn't like the US because he needs an enemy to control his people. I was talking about why S. America in general is a messed up place.

Why doesn't he just use Osama bin Ladin? We're not using him anymore.
