Yeah, Israel has done absolutely nothing to provoke those attacks. Oh the horror! Why would anybody possibly want to attack them?

This isn't an Israel/Palestine issue, this is another example of why senior government staff should have to dictate emails to a hired college intern and never be allowed to touch a computer.

Zionism is very much a hold over from the late 19th century -- when nationalist moments valued ethnic hegemony over secularism.

And every time pointing that out is called antisemitism, you devalue the word and give real antisemities a thicker rhetorical shield -- while weakening real moral standing.

It's always weird to me that people support the government in the conflict that actually has its own terrorist wing.

Sadly, the "final solution" is cheapened as a great crime by pretending somehow that ethnic cleansing is only bad if perpetrated industrially.

It's why phrases like "never again" become sad parodies.

"The grandchildren of Holocaust survivors from World War II are doing to the Palestinians exactly what was done to them by Nazi Germany," the email, obtained by the Jerusalem Post, states.

The two are useful only in metaphorical terms. Saying that they're exact same cheapens the argument.

Here's what I don't get. They keep saying that this latest excursion into Gaza proves that Israel has the might and will to be a true fighting force, as apposed to what we saw in Lebanon. How does smacking around a largely uneducated, untrained and unorganized group with no air force or artillery make you into a mighty army?

A major difference is jews weren't firing rockets at Germany. Also, the jews didn't proclaim their mission was to wipe Germans off the face of the Earth.

Thread over after a dozen posts.

The biggest thing I pulled from yesterday's Wordle thread was how prominent the word "Nation" was in Obama's speech. It's an anachronism that just doesn't make any sense in today's world. In fact it didn't really make sense then either but few knew any better at that time.

If half of your casualties are women and children, that's not war, that's a friggin raiding party. That is some viking or mongol or barbarian tactics you are using at this point. According to the reports, they were targeting schools and UN peaceworkers.

Someone should tell them that if they want to make idiodic comparisons of Israel's actions today to the Nazi Genocide that they picked the wrong forum.

They should just do it on Fark; safe, anonymous, regular audience. They'd fit right in. They might be one of the ones here making that comparison already.

Are we talking about the Stern Gang? Or the Mujahadeen? Or the Contras? Or the Lebanese Christian Militias?

It's so hard to keep track of all of these types of groups, and who, exactly, supports them.

How can a Government enforce a ghetto on land it doesn't own? If you're asking why did they blockade the area, that would be because Palestine was smuggling rockets in from Egypt. Also, Palestine is in such poor shape due to ineffectual leadership by the Government it elected Hamas.

Shaggy_C 2009-01-22 10:25:28 AM
DarnoKonrad: a government enforced ghetto is a government enforced ghetto.

The word "Holocaust" refers specifically to the systematic elimination of a large number of people. In modern usage, its become more centered around the activities of Nazi Germany in the 1940s. The ghettos are a separate issue, though one might argue that they were quite linked. I think the most apt comparison is the Judenrat to Fatah (and to some extent, Hamas).

I was thinking more Hamas, which is both a political party and a terrorist cell.

Under Norwegian's assessment, the ghettos France harbors their African and Middle Eastern immigrants is no different than what Hitler did either.

dinch: How does smacking around a largely uneducated, untrained and unorganized group with no air force or artillery make you into a mighty army?

Well, I'll tell you.

See, Palestinians are terrorists. All of 'em. They're born terrorists. Which means, of course, that they are 12 foot tall hairy things, kinda like trolls, only with more teeth. And they can shoot mortar shells out of their mouths. Women and children too! So normal people, see, need an army to take on these foul beasties, because these terrorists are such horrible, horrible monsters.

Just remember: terrorists. Terrorists justify... well.. ANYTHING, really. Cuz they're so scary! And mean!

Now, since all Palestinians are terrorists, and terrorists are really strong and scary, that means it was a fair fight. Ergo: Israel's army was mighty.

Q.E.D.

xanadian: Because retaliating for unprovoked missile attacks is EXACTLY like sending 6 million innocent people into the ovens.

Yeah, because when someone is occupying and colonizing parts of my country (have we all just forgotten the West Bank exists?) and treating my people like second class citizens (at best) that's completely unprovoked.

Now I'm not saying that shooting a wild missile into Israel and hurting Israeli citizens is going to solve anything (Hell, we all know its going to make things a whole lot worse. Remember Lebanon?), but if you're trying to say Israel is some kind of innocent victim here, well, then you apparently have no understanding of the situation what so ever.
