i have enjoyed Franks music for many many years and as much as i respect his work and his dedication to his craft composer extraordinaire and the engineering side of things - lately i wonder why he spent so much effort towards negative things lyricaly , the put downs, the raunchy , the obscene.. alot of it just comes off as gimmicky and something juvenille to snicker at and it gets tiresome ..

He thought the two most important things were:

1) When?
and 2) What the fark?

I would say that what you perceive as juvenile and raunchy are indeed just answering "what the fark?"

Also, he was trying to make a point that people get upset over the stupidest stuff. He made the point by intentionally trying to upset. His raunchiness is a lyrical equivalent of the discord that can be found in his music. He said, discord was like giving you an itch to scratch; scratching feels good, but you don't want the itching to go on forever.

So, he didn't go on raunchy forever.

I wonder how many motels they have in Bad Doberan to accommodate all the festival goers?

Free speech thing maybe? Was anyone else saying overtly negative, raunchy, and obscene things at the time?

They are just words.

Well it would have been good if the Germans had an official link. At least it wasn't like she was asking for $millions. They could have made some kind of deal. It is not like Zappa was a big seller. I know he didn't make the big Brittney bucks or anywhere near it. There was a story a back in the 80s where they mentioned his money problems. He spent a lot on musicians and making albums that didn't sell very many. He made 57 albums and I think only 10 or so are really well known.

I like this commercial for Berklee where Vai talks about his audition for Zappa.

I totally agree! Also, to Pope183, there have always been so many interesting things about his music that I hardly ever paid "that" much attention to the lyrics anyhow, they were just there and moderatly amusing! I suggest that if you tire of the lyrics, you just tune them out and listen to that wonderful creativity!

Gail and the Zappa family trust are a bunch of money grubbing whores. They have re-packaged FZ's songs in every imaginable combo in order to make a buck.

Free speech is great. The songs were still incredibly meh.

Don't get me wrong, I own about a dozen Zappa albums, I think he did some great stuff, and his early works in satire are awesome. His "novelty raunch" era was pretty bad however, IMO.

Zappa's on my list of "people whose work I like despite the best efforts of their #1 fans to try and sway me otherwise". Quoting FZ endlessly doesn't make you clever, it makes FZ clever. And yes I think he was an amazing musician, but no, I don't think everything he put out was great; one of the flip sides to being prolific is putting out crap as well.

/other members/genres on this list include: Pink Floyd, Monty Python, Anime, most web sites and comics

Right, unlike FZ, who when he was alive never ever replaced the original parts on the early Mothers albums with parts recorded when the CD's were remastered and reissued and then didn't note this fact clearly in the liner notes or promo material, causing some people to buy CD's two or three times to get the farking original musicians and mixes.

Oh wait.....

I guess I am lucky (unlucky?) but I only have a few other friends who listen to Zappa so I never get people quoting him at me. I was just providing a possible answer to the question. Just because you are exercising your free speech in a radical way doesnt mean it is good. I have 5 or 6 of his albums and enjoy them very much. I dont listen to it everyday but when I do I get a good chuckle and the lyrics and a warm feeling from the rock.

Nah. I was referring to Bam's uncle Don Vito, who was edited into the fan vid I linked. Did you watch it? Don Vito as the drummer is hilarious.

And Bozzio is the best Zappa drummer, but Ruth can play my marimba any day.

Our Man in Nirvana:

Sorry, I fail at watching the vid. Typically when I click on a Zappa link that doesn't actually contain live video of Zappa I'll tune it out. Plus I haven't watched MTV in a couple of decades so I wouldn't recognize Bam or his Uncle if they were molesting an underage child in front of me (I seem to remember some allegations of that sort related to Mr. 'Bam' & his Uncle)

Bam - Did Barney Rubble have Siamese twins?

Arguably, all of the musicians fortunate enough to do a hitch with Zappa were great. That was a minimum qualification I believe.

Except iTunes. Well, for more than a month at a time, anyway.

Maybe I'm making shiat up, but I imagine Frank would have totally been into something like iTunes, but less restricting than Apple - setting up his own online artist store and charging whatever the fark he wanted, throwing shiat he recorded this morning on the site every day ...

iTunes has some of the boots, but the quality's so bad I've only found a couple of things worth spending a buck on, namely a couple of guitar solos.

/miss you, frank

I met a kid that played drums for them for a while. He was in a two piece with Ween's bass player. I have been so entertained by a two piece.

I picked up one of Zappa's albums a few months back when Amazon mp3 had it on sale for a buck or something, cause I'd heard such good things about him. I think it was "The Ark." Can't say I was impressed though. Is all his stuff similar, and just not my taste, or did I just get one of his worse? If it's the latter, can someone suggest a better one?

Dear Jerk 2009-01-22 10:40:20 PM
Not everything Zappa did was gold. Jazz Discharge Party Hats was lousy on several levels. But it's still better than anything Peaches has ever done.

No, his stuff is not similar. He has quite a range. My favorite is the Joe's Garage trio. Probably quintessential Zappa is Apostrophe (') and Over-Nite Sensation. Then you can work your way into Hot Rats and Chungas Revenge and other early works. I saw him around the Tinseltown Rebellion tour so that is also special for me.

Actually, they've put some pretty good stuff up in their mp3 daily deals. I got the expanded edition of Terrapin Station for $.99 from it, and several other pretty high quality albums

I don't know that they're necessarily re-packaging so much as releasing music his fans want to hear. Are they supposed to do this for free? I got Trance-fusion, which was a ZFT release, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. If they make a few bucks while releasing his music, I think that's great. Old fans will know when things are repackaged, and anyone else spending their money will likely be a new fan who was introduced to Zappa via the repackaging(Zappa Picks come to mind. ZFT has tons of tapes, the more people buy this stuff, the more great music they'll release.
