I hate that I was laughing at that so much. It's either way too early or really funny.

As far as I can tell, this is the first greenlight of a Songsmith song after 8 rejections. Van Halen, Sting and the Beatles didn't make the cut.

What do I have to do to avoid going to this version of Heaven?

ROTFL. Add a heavy 909 kick drum and speed it up to about 180 bpm and you'll have a happy hardcore anthem!

Heaven sounds like OMD?

Third_Uncle_Eno 2009-01-22 10:42:11 AM
wow.... a major key music backing to the vocals actually fits very good places. it makes the song seem happyhappyhappy. weird.
and the song plus the serious vid is weirdly funny.

and, btw, WTF is Microsoft Songsmith? was it made in the 90's or something? cuz it sounds *that* cheezy. yeesh.

FrancoFile 2009-01-22 10:53:41 AM
Sounds like someone got all the background beats on their Casio to play at the same time.

tailormadebassist 2009-01-22 10:54:10 AM
Umm.....If that's heaven. I will avoid it. Heaven will be endless concerts by Hendrix, The Animals, Kurt Cobain and various members of bands that I love that have passed on. Hopefully with me jamming with them. OH....and Rush will be there too,and they will be just as awesome as they are now.

Loves me some Rush....but not loving that.

Believe it or not, it's brand new software. Provide a vocal track, and you select the mood and genre and such, and it generates the backing tracks.

Enter Songsmith (the beat actually reminds me of Bloodhound Gang's "The Bad Touch")

I was going to download the free demo from their site and waste the rest of my afternoon, but they recommend 1GB of RAM, which is a bit more than my 6-yr old 'puter has.

Total fail at 1:26 in... his vocals slow waaay down and the backing tracks don't even notice. And it's not like it shouldn't be able to; his cadence is fairly steady. WEAK.

Sounds like Raymond Scott's Electronium is rolling over in it's electronic grave*.

That wasn't Rush - that was an abomination with Geddy's vocals on it. But I repeat myself...

/fark you subby

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2009-01-22 03:03:17 PM
Yeah, sounds like Geddy's singing over a 1980s keyboard. I had to close my eyes because it was too weird watching the video.

bubbaprog [recently expired TotalFark] 2009-01-22 03:19:42 PM
Oh wow.

Folks, I'm the guy behind these. Whoever submitted this chose one of the worse ones. I strongly recommend Roxanne or one of the other choices (just click on this link to go to all of my videos) before the Rush one.

mekkab: Total fail at 1:26 in... his vocals slow waaay down and the backing tracks don't even notice. And it's not like it shouldn't be able to; his cadence is fairly steady. WEAK.

I'm not sure what you're saying here. First, Songsmith is incapable of dealing with tempo changes. I nudge the MIDI data a bit in various directions to compensate for this. As far as I know, nothing goes particularly off-course in any of the ones I've done (meaning, anything in the CLASSIC HITS BY MICROSOFT SONGSMITH series).

This is the ONLY intervention I make in the computerized process. I do not change any of the chords/music Songsmith selects, and I use the randomly-selected genre that pops up when you start the program.

steamingpile: There is a reason, this shiat sucks but people like to troll rush fans.

You thought this was supposed to sound good?

The whole point of this project was to show how ridiculous Songsmith is. And yet I receive emails from Microsoft telling me how awesome they think they are and interview requests from the Times of London.

ZAZ: Yeah, sounds like Geddy's singing over a 1980s keyboard.

That's because he *is* singing over a 1980s (actually 1970s) keyboard -- the sampler I ran the MIDI data through for that track is an Arp Odyssey.

If that's not yours, someone has stolen your thunder. It's a bizarre cruise ship version of some Van Halen song, and Roth comes across as a drunken yob who's stolen the microphone.

I see, Warner = bad, Universal = good. But you can get around it by just posting the audio with a pic instead of a video, it seems.
