It makes me ashamed to be British when this is our so called best! I'd rather stick acid soaked hot pokers in my eyes than listen to either Coldplay or Duffy.

This.

Don't feel too bad though. Every country has their share of shiat. That is just why I hate shiatty bands going global. No one really needs to import shiat when they produce plenty on their own.

That goes double for Canada

No worries. We all know it isn't.

However, we can expect this thread to produce lots of little flamewars because it mentioned Coldplay.

I feel so out of touch though. I haven't heard any of the artists mentioned in the article. Who's Duffy?

I'm rather fond of the experimental dubstep trickling out of the UK at the moment. You guys need to focus on that. Oh, and bring back LTJ Bukem and Good Looking Records, please. :) If you can get Bukem to stop acting like a mafioso that is.

Ruined his own scene. What a div!

I like Duffy and Coldplay. Not love, though.

Davescookies 2009-01-21 10:44:21 AM
Duffy is a Brigger, plain and simple. Winehouse, Natasha Bedingfield all of them. I would say it's the drugs that make them that way, but Adele is the worst of them all. And she weighs like 18 stone. Way too fat to be on dope.

Sybarite [TotalFark] 2009-01-21 10:47:36 AM
I find I like a lot of music coming out of the UK in the past few years; Super Furry Animals, Broadcast, British Sea Power and Dirty Pretty Things to name a few.

I had the unfortunate experience of walking past a stage that Duffy was "singing" on at a festival this summer. I was over 100 yards away, but her voice and the sound were so earsplittingly bad that I literally covered my stage-side ear going past. It was horrible. Too bad because that one song is kind of catchy in a top-40 way.

Duffy is just another flash in the pan pop artist who'll vanish in a couple of years. As for Coldplay, what really, really bugs me is when they're described as a rock band, WTF? I like rock music, proper rock music, not this coma inducing durge!

Coldplay is soft rock. Yes, the same soft rock your parents used to listen to that sucked. It's the same shiat as U2, John Tesh, and Yanni. Yes, that is what that music sounds like to me. It's the music I listen to when I want to have a nice easy poop.

I really like Duffy, but that has a lot to do with the fact that I think Bernard Butler is one of the more interesting guitar players and musicians to come out in the last 30 years (solo work excluded)

Duffy is cute. Her music is very tolerable, because it actually is music. Coldplay sucks, and they ripped off a dude who ripped off Alizee. I mentioned Alizee, and by Imperial Fark law I must now post a photo of her:

I have been enjoying dubstep quite a bit over the last few months.

You know that scene in American Beauty where the filming kid explains how he's so overwhelmed by all the beauty around him?
That is how I feel about music recently. For a long time actually. Everywhere I turn there is another whole genre, with a bunch of awesome people dancing to the soundtrack.

They're definitely right up there.

My only complaint is that I damn near lost hearing for a day or two after seeing them. Apparently my ears are quite sensitive to Bellamy's penchant for distortion wankery.

Nope! It's kind of sad but it's how it is at the moment.

It's not like I expect that to ever change though.

Yeah, there's a ton of music if you're open and receptive to it. Most Farkers just sit around and whine about their lawn and Rush or something. ;)

I caught Duffy on Saturday Night Live a few months ago and thought she was terrific. Bought her CD and while it's not all gold, a large chunk of it is really quite good.

The retro-soul movement is FAR fom a bad thing.

I still don't see the problem with Coldplay. "Rush of Blood..." is one damned fine album. I guess I can't be a hipster if I enjoy music on my own terms, eh?

hamiltonjdavid [TotalFark] 2009-01-21 07:38:36 PM
Let's see. Billboard claims that the top 10 tracks is currently being performed by The All American Rejects, Britney Spears, Kevin Rudolf, Jason Marz, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, T.I., Kanye West, Beyonce and at number one Lady Gaga.

If I had to choose between the performers of the most popular songs in the USA and Coldplay, I'm pretty sure I'd go with Coldplay.

I think my problem with Coldplay is that they're doing nothing that wasn't done in the early 90s, but those bands were virtually ignored by the mainstream. Now Coldplay does the same thing, albeit very watered-down, yet they're huge. Coldplay is the new Nirvana, except at least Nirvana seemed to be modest.
