It's true. The list is correct. Although Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, and pretty much anything on Definitive Jux should replace P.E., Beasties, Wu,

i dunno man, wu was my introduction to rap. i would add kanye for the younger generation of white kids.

The writer is obviously a white guy that apparently wants to think that no other white people listen to the stuff he listens to... and he'd be wrong.

I never associated Wu with the backpacker scene at all. I was introduced to them along with Camp Lo, Beatnuts. I found the Roots on my own and a lot of the other backpacker rap, but it never really stuck. It was too abstract to DJ. I always preferred the party rock stuff. *shrug*

backpacker rap is a phrase i am unfamiliar with, elaborate? i found the roots when they opened for beck for his two turntables tour.

That's my favorite MC!

Seriously, this realm of music needs more artists from Def Jux. Best indy rap label, period. Aesop Rock + Del = Best EVAR!

Personally, I'm too scared of dark-skinned people and music with bass. So fark all ya'll ho's.

Winktologist [TotalFark] 2009-01-20 06:08:21 PM
You can't take the Beastie Boys off this list. Sure they've got a lot of crossover stuff and a lot of their tracks are corny, but they've also done some groundbreaking stuff and the beats themselves are always top notch.

VictoryCabal [TotalFark] 2009-01-20 06:08:53 PM
Wow, a top 10 list I'm actually good with. I'm white, and I'm a big fan of all of those. Weird.

I'm not a big hip hop fan, but I dig Dr. Dre. I always liked Snoop Dog, too.

Gotta love the props to Public Enemy there.
The song they did with Anthrax was and still is excellent.

(clarification: I know it was technically Anthrax covering PE, but since Chuck D and Flava Flav appeared on the track, I worded it the way I did)

One of these ten is not like the other.

If it weren't for wannabe suburban wankstas, Eminem would be out of a job.

at the very beginning they were. check youtube for the cypher from the final "yo! mtv raps" (at least i think it was the final one). from memory you'll see a young method man rhyming with a backpack on.

I'm rocking some Sage Francis right now, gotta throw him into this mix. Gotta agree with Def Jux though, El-P and Aes are two of my favorites.

And since I still don't actually own a copy of "Nation Of Millions" I think it's off to Amazon for me!

as much as eminem's whole druggie-i-hate-my-mom-i-wanna-kill-my-girls schtick got played the hell out super quick, there is no denying he was an amazing mc. just listen to his wake up show freestyles from before he was signed for proof

Not in any way sure of the reason for the hate, but I'll proudly add a "Douchewad" badge to my Fark profile if you care to make one for me.

btw - Atmosphere are on Rhymesayers, not Def Jux.

I have to admit I thought this would be a terrible list at first. White guys and hip/hop don't mix. This list gives me hope that not as many white dudes as I thought listen to crappy hip/hop. Off this list I listen to Murs, MF Doom, Outkast, Public Enemy, Mos Def, Wu-Tang Clan, The Roots, and the Beastie Boys. Come to think of it I saw about half of them at rock the bells in NY. One thing I notice is the artists listed actually have sustainable music as opposed to most hip/hop artists (50 cent, The game, Lil Wayne). They have great lyrics and more than one and only one beat during a song. That's what I thought the list would look like a top 40 for hip/hop. Besides for Eminmem and Outkast this is like an indie hip/hop dream.

DOOM doesn't even like DOOM. He doesn't even perform at his own shows.
