I have both, and I much prefer RB2 to GHWT. I may be biased because I started off with Rock Band and then moved on to Rock Band 2 before finally buying Guitar Hero.

I have both, and think they're about equal, depending on what you want. The drum hardware for GH is better than RB (I like having raised cymbals), and I like the scoring system in GH better (it keeps track of scores for individual instruments when you're solo playing, plus different scores per difficulty level). However, RB has much better DLC than GH, and more of it.

GH also much harder to play at the highest level; expert mode RB is equivalent to hard mode in GH.

They both suck in that you have to play the "game" portion of the game to unlock all the songs; and 1 and 2 star scores are meaningless, you'll get kicked off the stage first. A new scoring system is needed when you can complete 70%-95% of a song, and still get 3 stars.

Personally, I was sad to find so few songs by 311 and Sublime. But I'm not sure I'd be satisfied unless they were ALL in there.

I still love my GHWT, though. I actually beat a song on hard the other day! Yay me! :)

Do the tracks include a 10+ minute vocalist solo where the player has to discuss a lengthy anecdote about a conversation he once had with his Dad?

/No? Then it's not real Bruce.
//Always wondered how the E-Street Band felt repeating the same few bars over and over as Bruce's stories rambled on.

Tyrone Slothrop: I have both, and I much prefer RB2 to GHWT. I may be biased because I started off with Rock Band and then moved on to Rock Band 2 before finally buying Guitar Hero.

I have Rock Band 1, and guitar hero 2 & 3. I've played world tour, but don't have it yet (have to pick up my copy from my friends office in another building. So the best I can do is compare rock band 1 to GH3.

Since I've mainly played from a singleplayer/double player (both guitars) perspective, I don't the comparison will be that off.

I preferred the songs in GH3, rock band had too many country and too many emo punkish songs for my taste.

GH also much harder to play at the highest level; expert mode RB is equivalent to hard mode in GH.

Guitar hero 3 seemed much harder overall. I just flew through rock band's solo career. I think there was even a song or two that was in both games, and in all cases, the GH3 version of the song was much harder.

A new scoring system is needed when you can complete 70%-95% of a song, and still get 3 stars.

The star scoring system is based on how many points you get on a song, not percentage of completion.

In GH3, after the song is done, you can break down the scoring by section of the song. I couldn't see a way to do that in Rock Band. That feature was helpful in GH since I could go into practice mode, and practice the one part of the a song that was screwing me up.

I prefer the round frets in GH, they're easier for me to see and I can judge the distance/timing between them a lot better.

I prefer rock band's clean fret bar. Some characters on GH3 have fret bars that are blueish, so that when in star power mode, the notes blend into the fret bar.

When in 'star power' mode in rock band, I like that the frets don't change color.

However, I hate that in rock band, 'star power' frets are white. When I'm playing faster songs, I look at the colors of the frets out of the corner of my eye to tell what I need to play. But 'star power' frets are white, so I can't do that.

Guitar hero 3 had a lot more free DLC

Rock band had a lot more paid DLC (I'm not a big fan of DLC so not a big plus for me).
